Have you ever been tempted to learn a song... just in case!
dmccombe7 replied to warwickhunt's topic in General Discussion
In my early days with the Glam band i would learn any song that was mentioned only to find that when i turned up at a rehearsal no-one else had learned them or the band decided they didn't fancy it and hadn't done it. There would be songs suggested that i learned ready for next rehearsal to find the band hadn't but did want to do in the future. It happened so often i now will not learn a song until the full band agrees on our private chat line. Dave -
Not sure if i posted this one before. Back in this venue tonight with same band Emergency Exit. Dave

Bands whose live albums trounce their studio efforts

Would love to see this duo. It just sounds like an amazing project. Dave

If you are enjoying it then that's a big plus altho its better to have an idea of what other members want from the band. Its something we talk about now and again with the Glam band. We have an attitude that if someone isn't comfortable with an idea then we just don't do it. Its usually down to number of gigs we do. Guitarist would play every night and all night but others have family commitments plus another band we play in so we have to be very open about it all to make sure everyone knows the score. Its a bit of a balancing act really. I'm loving it and would probably play a bit more up to one a week. I don't enjoy 2 nights in a row. It just knackers me. Dave

Yip i've used JMB too and had a fair bit of success with it. I did find a lot of the messages i sent got no response tho but that's the nature of the business these days. Dave

Not a problem if its all up front what the organiser needs for them. With our punk band our PA normally fits in cars but to take our full PA rig with subs we need to hire a van at £150 upwards leaving £100 between the 4 of us for supplying a full PA, lighting and backline plus we would need to be there early to set up and sound check for XSLF and we would be there until they finished. You also need a SE for the full night and he normally charges us £100 a gig. We would literally have been playing for nothing if not losing money. If the organiser had been up front with what he needed from us we would have given a realistic rental for the PA etc. I just found the whole thing very distasteful to say the least. We would probably have done it all for around £500 because it was a good support slot to get. Typically if we need a full PA of that size we would be £800 upwards depending on the Glam or Punk band. Wear the band's logo t-shirt while gigging?
dmccombe7 replied to SumOne's topic in General Discussion
Not in our Glam covers band but usually one of us wears our punk covers T shirt band more as an advert that we sell them. Our singer will at some point in the show point to the wearer and say our t shirts are available to buy. Not every gig but quite a few. Dave -
Nice one. We got asked to support them few yrs ago and the organiser asked how much we would charge to play. After i gave him the price of £250 back then i was assuming PA and lighting was supplied for them he then informed me that they would use our backline plus we need to supply the PA and lighting. I said no that i don't allow people i don't know to use my bass rig plus we hadn't quoted for supplying a full PA rig and lights. Think it was more an issue with the sneakiness of the organiser than the band to be fair. Have a great gig. Dave

Sounds like someone got a wee speeding ticket there @ped. It does annoy me too. Oddly enough i had a police car outside my house today with a speed camera in our wee village road. Can only guess something has happened on the road or someone has complained about the speeding as its a long straight road. Dave

That's good news. The amount of heat generated from valves is quite surprising. You wouldn't want to touch one. Dave
-
Yep that's the same with mine. I was thinking the top of the amp was very hot first time i used it but not enough to bother me. Most small footprint all valve amps get very hot. Just remember to switch off right away after a gig and allow time for it to cool a bit before throwing in the back of your car and try and store flat on its feet. Let us know what reply you get tho just in case something aint right. Have to say it works without issue. Dave
-
My WB100 runs pretty hot too. Hotter than the Marshalls our guitarists use. Its an all valve amp in a small box so you are gonna get a fair bit of heat next to the casings. Other valve amps would have a larger gap between the top of the valves and the top of the amp with a grill for ventilation. Can't remember if it has a fan in it or not. Can't say i've heard one when i've used it at home on the odd occasion. iI'd agree about same a s hot Latte is probably a good description. Dave

Well done and good to see you back out gigging. Dave

I was brought up on Prog and Rock ie Genesis, Floyd, Rush and Kiss. When i was 20 i decided to listen to jazz rock bassists just to improve my playing. Couple of yrs ago i was asked by our drummer if i would be interested in helping his punk band till they got a new bassist. I enjoyed it so much i stayed and its just great fun. Takes a lot of finger stamina to play punk fingerstyle for 2.5hrs. I appreciate you want to stick to what you like and are into. I would rather be playing any bass in a band no matter what style as long as i enjoy it. I did pack in the club and function band to be fair as it just wasn't me. Hope you can find a metal band that suits you. Nothing better than getting fellow musicians into same music and playing what you like. All the best. Dave

Until i found the bands i'm currently in, i joined various styles of bands to get more experience. Everything from Prog, Rock, Pop, Tribute, club style and even a Ceilidh style rock band. Some were covers and some were originals but for me it was worth it. I learned a fair bit and i had to accept different characters in each band. Means i'm a bit more tolerant these days and accept that not everything in a band will be perfect and i just get on with my job in the band. I'm very lucky that i get along with everyone in both bands and it just works. We have a great laugh at gigs and even rehearsals are great fun. Dave

100% and that guy might be a valuable contact in future. Both bands i'm in at moment have same drummer. I first spoke with him 6yrs before being in a band with him. We had discussed by PM's about doing Glam Rock but couldn't find the right people and it fell away. Then out of the blue i got a message thru the grapevine that a guy was looking to do a Glam band and when i spoke with him and suggested the drummer he said he knew him and was already on board and the drummer had also recommended me on bass. We had never met and had never heard each other but when you know you know. We've been in same band for 5 yrs now. Bit of a long winded storyline there There's no reason for not giving a quick one liner reply saying you are busy at moment. Dave
-
I think its just bad manners. I always reply to any messages i get altho i don't use Bandmix much at all these days. Dave

Do a little photo-shoping and remove it. Dave

Never mind the singers head what about possible damage to the bass. You can replace a singer, not so much a nice bass. Dave

Looks like a great venue. Very atmospheric. Nice Dave

I've heard of bands simply putting a cloth or material of some sort over the mic /sensor for the Decibel meter and that's enough to dampen its response. I have heard of the sockets that aren't covered by the trip circuit too. Guess we either don't play that loud or venues have them switched off for us ? Dave

Never come across any to be honest with my own bands. If they've been there they were never triggered. Dave

I'll try and come down if not gigging Stevie. Would be good to catch up. Dave

Probably to be expected as he must have gone thru h*ll with that accident wondering how he's gonna cope with life. Well done to you guys for staying with him and getting him back up there. Hopefully he's getting more confidence and getting on with things as normal. Quite inspirational i have to say. I'm getting quite emotional myself now. 😂 That's made me happy today. Dave
