  1. Agree but some of us do like to know what the string height is. Its an engineering thing i guess. I just like numbers against things as a point of reference. Out of curiosity for those that dont measure their string height. Do you measure your neck relief or just do a visual down the neck edge. ? Dave
  2. Very formal looking stage gear. You do brush up well Pete 😂 Dave
  3. This is usually how i work but being an engineer i tend to measure things just for peace of mind. That;s why my own basses range from approx 1.8mm up to approx 2.5mm on my 4 string basses. If i get a bass that's far too high i'll drop the string height to 2mm and work from there based on string buzz or not. If i dont have any buzz at 2mm i'm happy leaving it there. 2mm is my preferred target figure. Dave
  4. If you can fire an arrow from your neck the relief is off a little. Works for me
  5. Simple quickie question but where do you measure your string height ? I measure at 12th fret but i've heard of different opinions. Just curious to see if there's a common agreement. Dave
  6. Too late its done now lets see what happens. It'll end up another P v J thread again i bet 😂 Sometimes its nice to cast a line and see who bites first Dave
  7. Think a lot depends on how you play. If you have a light touch with your plucking hand its easy to have a low action. Altho my VM4 arrived with 1.5mm and i was able to play at home with a light touch i found when i gigged i could hear a little fret buzz and adjusted action up to just under 2mm and i'm quite happy with that. I now aim for 2mm but my P bass is just under 2.5mm i think at 12th fret. I can live with it but i know a decent luthier could get it better for me. I think the nut end is also a little high but i've not looked into that bit as yet. It just feels a little high at first few frets 1-3. Dave
  8. Think i'll ask the BC public where they measure theirs. Could make for an interesting topic on here. Then again it might be a bag of worms LOL Dave
  9. I had printed out their official set up guide from the Fender website altho it was a lot of years ago. Measured at 12th fret its 2mm and at 17th fret its just under 2.25mm so not much difference. My gauge goes up in 0.25mm scales. Dave
  10. Its a shame because he has some good advice but its just overkill when you open something. Dave
  11. Yep i fell into that trap too. Cant remember what i was looking for but i was swamped with SBL junk mail and simply "unsubscribed" to stop it all. I found the continued bombardment intimidating, arrogant and extremely annoying. Put me right off. Dave
  12. I've been playing 40+ yrs and that still annoys me when a simple "how to" vid starts with someone trying to show off. I guess they are trying to show that they are competent at what they do but for me a slap fest isn't a sign of bass competence. I prefer the guys that just go straight into showing you how to play the song. There are some great clips out there tho and its trying to find the people that work for you. Dave
  13. Low for me is under 2mm. (12th fret) Med is 2-3mm High is over 3mm Fender guidelines is 2.5mm so i've always accepted 2.5mm is the average or mid point. (measured at 12th fret) That's another thing about where you measure. I've always done 12th fret, you mention 17th fret so what's the right way ? Curious what height are yours at 12th fret. I'm going to measure mine at 17th fret out of curiosity. 😆 I play quite hard fingerstyle altho i've managed to control that a little over recent years. My Sandberg VM4 arrived with 1.5mm at 12th fret Dave
  14. I've got that book but never read it thru. Just flicked thru some of the pics. All seemed a bit too much to get into but a good collectors item if you like Rush or Geddy. Maybe i got it wrong and i was just surprised it wasn't low to med string height. Funny how the old brain processes information when you get older. 😀 Something you mentioned i was curious about too was that Rics had higher string height. I had one in 80's and i dont recall it being too bad and i was always under the impression they had a low action. Is it something you've experienced or come across as i'm quite interested in getting another Ric at some point. Dave
  15. Its daddy is just to the left of it. You can just see the edge at the bottom corner. Here's a better pic. This is one of those Father Ted moments. "these ones are small and those ones are far far away
  16. The Geddy is down at just under 2mm but my P bass is high. If i lower the P bass any lower it chokes at the 15th - 17th frets. Needs the frets heights dropped a little at the body end but i'm not good enough to do that kind of work. I once read that Geddy has a low to med action but plays hard and that's why he has that gnarl from a little fret rattle. Sure it was his bass tech doing a rig run-down thing that he mentioned how his basses were set up. Dave
  17. Its my fav bass to play. The neck is amazing and it just feels perfect for what i do and my style of playing. Its a bit biting for the bands i play in and lacks a bit of low end heft but i still love it. Not used it with my Handbox WB-100 all valve amp yet so that might give it a bit more depth of tone. I've got the bug for my P bass tone at moment but its not such a great bass to play as my Jazz. Neck is wide and it needs some neck work done when i get around to it. Can only get the action down to 2.5mm. I prefer 2mm. Will look at getting it sorted in 2023 with a bit of luck. Dave
  18. I do love the sound of a Tama kit but i remember them being loud and quite sharp sounding too. I'm lucky that our drummer is reasonably quiet. Dave
  19. Bought a pearl scratchplate from our very own @Alfie Noakes last Thu. Posted Fri and arrived Sat morning. Just fitted and i'm fair pleased with it. Had to make a few little adjustments to its fitting and one hole is half a hole out and not really worth filling in, drilling to make a new screw hole. Been wanting one of these for a while and it just popped up in For Sale. What do you think, before and after pics. Before After Close up
  20. Another nice bass rig. I'm guessing the drummer spits a lot while playing .......... or he's just loud Dave
  21. Nice bass rig you have there. What's in the top rack ? Dave
  22. Lovely. Like both basses there. Cheers for that you have started off my 2023 GAS. Dave
