1. I like to think I'm intelligent, definately not an introvert, i am a deep thinker, no problems with making eye contact and love the sun (except when i'm at work). I do have long hair and a beard though, if that amounts to any bassist stereotypes. It seems from a jobs thread i saw ages ago (not necessarily on here, may have been TB) that a lot of bassists also work in IT too, which is what i do. Liam
2. I mainly play my 4 because: It sounds better, it's lighter, i can throw it around easier, it balances better, it's nicer to play, my drive/preamp is set up for my P which has a higher output than my 5, and it fits better with the image of the band. I still have no problems with playing my 5, i just don't feel the need to put up with its drawbacks compared to my Fender in a live situation, when it's not necessary. Liam
3. I just buy Duracells from my local hardware shop. £2 each, and i don't buy them often so I'm not too bothered about 'wasting' a bit of money on them. Which reminds me, i should replace the battery in my P sometime soon, i don't think it's been done for over a year. Liam
4. I alternate between the two depending on what I'm playing. I do have a Thumb rest on my bass, but it's just for show 'cause i find that it's not in a comfortable position for me. Liam
5.
[paraphrase] "i know your game, scammers. You always have three letter names. Cheers Ken" Ha ha ha Genius!
I didn't even notice that one... The finish reminds me of the plasterboard that's just gone on the wall of a new office at work, except that one doesn't have a random trem arm in the middle of it.... Liam
6. Played along to what now view as the demo version of one of my bands tracks, which is completely different to what we actually play now, as it's cr*p, and is missing my tasty little bass licks and the dubstep breakdown. The only things similar are the opening note of the verse and chorus, and the lyrics. And that's about it. I'll probably pick it up again and do my usual rendition of Bruno Mars' Runaway Baby before i go to bed. Liam
7. You Me At Six - Loverboy, and Rorys tone on Get Off My Microphone by Boomin (Listen to the teaser of Track 2 on here). That album is full of phenomenal bass tones, plus myself (and about 10 or 12 others) doing the crowd vocals, and it's one of the few albums i've bought in a while that doesn't have a bad song. Liam
8. My vote has been cast. I must say, there's a downright excellent collection of songs there. It's insane how so many people can get so many different messages and emotions from just one image. Can't wait for next months competition. Liam
9. With the way others have regarded Clarky on here since i joined, and from what i've seen of his posts, it doesn't surprise me that a guy like him would take quite a risk to help out a fellow BC member. Now that's what i call a top bloke. Liam
10. Welcome Charlie, you've got a quite a tasty collection of basses there, definately some good stuff, and as Bert said above me, don't be a stranger, we're all friendly on here, and quite enthusiastic. Liam
11. My band played a gig last year and were being heckled before we'd even played a note, by a few bands of older gentlemen/ladies (One of whom asked 'can i have a bit more low end in my monitor' which cracked us up). I just found it a bit amusing that the only bassist out of 4 bands to turn up with a proper bass head, speaker leads, and spares, despite all the others clearly having a lot more musical experience than me [Sarcasm intended]. I personally don't get what i like to refer to as the 'teenager treatment' because i look about 23/24 not 17, and the fact that i turn up and pull out a slightly vintage Fender probably helps a tad. I treat people like i want to be treated myself, so if they don't treat me the same, then f*ck 'em, not a problem for me. Liam
12. Last year my uncle did 6 months out in Corfu, playing weekly at 4 different clubs. Just him, his guitars and his backing tracks. Made a killing and everybody loved it. He has since done another 4 months there with a Bon Jovi tribute band and is planning on another 3 next year. The people out there seem to love what he was doing on his own, but he also had guitar, not just his backing tracks (Which 1 guitar was always removed from IIRC). Another guy i saw at a local pub, Billy Idol tribute called Rebel Yell. Packed out the place and put on a hell of a show (Aided by the whopping PA and 24 channel board for a mic and backing track?!?!). Liam
13. I knew Cobus would end up on here somewhere, he is a damn fine drummer, and his kit's not exactly too bad either. This guys one of my personal favourites, and probably has one of the best sounding kits on youtube IMO, not to mention that i absolutely love the song. Liam I can't believe i forgot to mention this guy as well (Not entirely joking there, he is one hell of a drummer) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItZyaOlrb7E
14.
One final point: the red light on the BDI is pretty small and faint - in a brightly-lit rehearsal room it was difficult to see whether it was iluuminated or not. Also, Red light illuminated means the BDI is turned off - I find that confusing because red lights on my head generally mean a function is turned on.
Mine is on when the red LED is on?! That's quite confusing. Liam
15. Decided that i'm definately going down the 'mini' board route, as soon as i can afford it all. My plan is to get a Line6 Relay G50 with 2 transmitters, running into a Polytune Mini, into a Sansamp VT Bass Deluxe with some form of Octave (MXR BOD most likely, unless i find a good one that's tiny, any suggestions?) in the effects loop, all on a Pedaltrain Mini with a Diago MicroPower 9 strapped underneath. All i need, and it's not an OTT size like my last one (Though compared to some of yours, mine was tiny) Liam
16.
I've recently scored the wine red/rosewood version. Apparantly 150 were made, 45 got to Europe and 9 to the UK. The first 50 were signed by the VP quality control at the Corona plant (all of these stayed in the US I'm told). Nothing to say Fender won't do another run at a later date, LC
I wouldn't say they all stayed in the US. My mate's just picked up a 2012 FSR Precision (With maple board, like it should be ) and the serial is 004. Not sure if it's signed, i'll have to ask him later. Liam Edit: It is signed by Jeff Allen, Head of Production at Fender's Corona plant in California.
17.
We got asked to do a Hootie and the Blowfish tune for a specific gig along with a James Morrison song. So we learned them and tried them at 2 gigs...they bombed big style - nobody knew them.... Graeme
We did a Hootie song ourselves once, got it video'd, stuck it on youtube and it then got tweeted by Darius Rucker (Frontman of Hootie and the Blowfish). Liam
18.
most of my best ideas actually start with beats, then bass, then a melody
I'm very much the same. I like to build things up from the bass, and also threw a rather tasty beat into Guitar Pro last night so that should occupy me for a week or two. Liam
19. Loving that '78 P on Bass Direct at the moment, too bad i've not got £1850 (Which is a lot less than i first expected it would be) Liam
20. I don't always immediately play what i'm thinking, i write it out in Guitar Pro to see how it sounds before i grab my bass, except obviously when it's writing a new song with the band, then i usually end up playing what my singer hears, with my own little twists (Or some cases, very big twists). Liam
21.
I run a Focusrite Compunder in my loop. Its on all the time, very low ratio, low threshold, medium attack, fast release, sensible makeup gain, and with the limiter section catching any silliness from the fx. I use it that way to fatten everything up a tad, even out the changes in volume from different techniques and fx, all whilst remaining very transparent. I regularly hit over 3 to 6dB of gain reduction according to the meters, yet I can never 'feel' its on, unless I'm really digging in, and thats a sure sign I need to turn up the master volume of the amp before I wreck my hands... A properly set up compressor can not affect your ability to play with dynamics, it just doesnt work like that! If you are looking to put a compressor in your fx loop, do yourself a favour and get a full fat rack jobbie (dbx, focusrite, even an alesis 3630 - all are more versatile and easier to set up than a pedal without metering once you know what you are doing). Conan - search for some of my posts on setting up compression (hint: they are old posts now, you will have to look back quite a way) - they should help you get your head around it!
I think there might a very useful blog post in here somewhere 5im0n, as it is definately something to look at when recording as well as in a live environment. Personally, i don't use one, though i did think that the built in one in the Line6 Lowdown series was damn good for a 1 knob compressor, too bad it was always kicking in when i was using that amp as it lacked what i needed so i had to crank it. Definately made a big difference when i was after a really punchy tone a few years ago though. Liam
22. Try a few out in your area (Whether new or used) and see what you like best. Personally, i love the MIJ stuff, and you can get a used 80's Export MIJ P and Jazz for less than new MIA model. Liam
23. If i couldn't afford an AxeFX, The only 3 i'd be considering are the Eleven Rack, Boss GT-Pro and Line 6 Pod HD-Pro. My boss uses the POD X3 and loves it, and i know people who are rating the Pod HD stuff quite highly as well. Pod HD Pro, and if the drives are a bit sh*te in your opinion, throw something like a Boss MT-2 in the effects loop and you're sorted. Liam
24. 30 years till they start going up? Only a few years till my '86 Precision goes up then, though i think the huge battery compartment and EMG pickups might just knock that back a little... Or a lot... Liam
25.
Westhoughton? Westhoughton? Luxury. Us in Whelley dream of Westhoughton
I think 'Nightmares' may be a better term for that one Liam
