1. It might be due to the hot hand drawing a little extra juice from the circuit, which is creating the hum like not having enough power does? Liam
2.
Ok, I buy that it's great - and the burnt orange has received my approval... though I think I'd prefer the matt black version they do; but... ... what's so different about the pre-amp? Am I getting something different than hitting up an HH Stingray? I was quite late to the Stingray camp, though am now a massive fan - as my PM history with Gareth will attest to!
It's a 4 band 18v pre, whereas the Stingray is a 3 band 9v. Plus the neo magnet pickups and the fact that it has destructive properties when amplified. Liam
3. SInce that set i posted above we've added some more that really go down a treat, not many as we've been doing mostly shorter sets of originals instead of a few hour run at a pub gig: Call Me Maybe - Carly Rae Jepson Tik Tok - Ke$ha (Our acoustic version is on youtube) Beautiful Girls - Sean Kingston and we've been working on Party in the USA by Miley Cyrus (sp?)
4.
If you have a wet afternoon to spare mock up a board using a scale drawing or cut out bits of a cereal box. Stay with me here.... OK I was babysitting and bored one afternoon so I got my niece and nephew to draw pedals onto shapes I'd cut out from a cereal box and told them they were designing what Uncle G would be using in his band. They loved it Most sites have the dimensions/spec or their pedal on there so a ruler, some safety scissors and free child labour and you can have a 'working' diagram in a few short hours.
I did this, but i did it on a powerpoint document 'cause it was too much effort to find some scissors and stuff. I've also done it on a big piece of wood with the actual pedals, that was really useful actually. Liam
5.
What do you mean "by numbers"?
I'm going to hazard a guess that he means the note number of a chord, so say, the 3rd note of a G chord etc... Liam
6. One of the Sansamp type Pre-Amps would probably be your best bet if you want some tonal control from your end, i love my Behringer BDI-21 and you can pick them up for next to nothing, mine was only £30 new, though if you wanted you could easily get the Sansamp version AND the Behringer in that budget. If you love the sound of your bass flat then a bog standard DI box like the one above will do just fine. Liam
7.
Is that the .. Mike Seal and Calli OCD?
No it's not, it's a relatively small band from Bolton, 2 twins Cam and Kurt on Bass/Vocals and Guitar/Vocals respectively, and i think the drummer is their brother. Liam Edit for major spelling fail, i've never met a man called Kurn......
8. In addition to my last post, the gig last night was even better. Tiny crowd again, but that's all you need to fill that pub, and i couldn't hear myself all night. We were told afterwards that the sound was spot on, and that my mate who provided us with his drums was incredibly impressed with how they performed in a gig situation. The venue heard what we said about possibly being the bands last gig together, and have kindly offered us another date mid-august so we can throw a proper farewell gig and go out as best we can. Some of my old friends from another local band (Called O.C.D.) came down as well for the evening and they were mightily impressed with us as a band, which is always good. So all in all, an awesome night. Liam
9. My bands drummer is doing the exact same thing. Only going to be playing for 2 hours, but yet again he did do a 4 hour rehearsal on Wednsday, 45 mintue set on Thursday, one incredibly energetic hour set last night and will be doing about 2 hours of hyped up playing tonight. He's going to be dead.
10. It's something i've always wondered about, i've also wondered about 4 Super 12's in an 8x12 guitar style config, now that would 'cause structural damage. Liam
11. Played Leyland Festival, last on at the RAFA Club (One of 12 venues and 94 artists over 2 nights) and despite there only being about 30 people there, the PA being pretty sh*t and not much stage space, it was f*cking outstanding. We got off stage almost 2 hours ago and i'm still sweating now (Grim, i know, but it's a sign of a good gig). The act on before us was a magician called Magi' Chris who was surprisingly good. I tried out my DIY bass only IEM rig as well, definately improved my playing massively. Double encore and blood on the vocalist/rhythm guitarists pickguard, crackin' night. We just got to hope tonight is just as good, preferably even better now, as it's unfortunately looking as though it's our last gig with our current lead guitarist, who's been in this band in all roles (rhythm and lead guitars, drums, bass and vocals) over the past 7 years whilst the lineup has changed around him, it'l be a sad moment for us all. Liam
12. Seen this myself, hope he gets found alive and well very soon. Liam
13. Sadowsky do these, and you could also probably take a look at the Musicman HS models. I've been looking into this myself for my Squier 5 or possibly a Warwick double-buck ($$) style. Liam
14. Are these giggable on their own? I'm rather tempted by the 4 Ohm version, and at a price like that it's hard to say no (As soon as i can afford it!) Liam

..

Some absolutely solid playing in that band, loving the bass work. I might try and pop down to one of the shows if i get chance and i can afford it, looks brilliant (And that's coming from someone who isn't really known for being an MJ fan) Liam
16. I use this in one of my bands original songs, we've got a recording of it from about a year and a half ago which is sh*te and you can't hear the bass, but it makes up part of probably the best bassline i've ever written. Liam
17. THe 18v 4 band pre on these is just MONSTROUS. I keep dreaming of running a Bongo 6HH Stealth into an Orange Bass Terror 1000 and Barefaced Super 12 instead of hiring a demolition team. Liam
18. My action at the 12th is around 3mm. I do truss rod tweaks myself (I also follow this setup guide) although on my Fender is a ballache as it's at the neck end, can be done just means me taking the pickguard off. Liam
19.
Mate your speaking to a man who want to be a fire truck, it makes perfect sense. I was thinking about the piano idea too as it makes perfect sense. Go on master four fingers, it does work once you get the flow right
Nothing wrong with wanting to be a fire truck Piano's something i've considered for a while, but never been able to afford/had the time. Liam
20. Hot Pink Jazz, Maple fretboard with black blocks, or plain maple. Matching headstock, all matte black hardware. My dream bass, don't be ashamed. Liam
21. If i re-joined my first band now i would probably want to shoot myself, though on the other hand, i might find it more enjoyable as i actually know what i'm doing with a bass now and would be able to craft some good basslines. I left that band after a year and joined my current band. During the first 2 years of my playing i was having regularly weekly lessons at school, which helped at first but then it turned to just learning new songs as the guitarists i was grouped with weren't up to scratch (One of which was the guitarist in my first band) so i really didn't get the help i needed with the theory side of things, which at the time didn't see as an issue as i didn't know. As many others have said, the first step toward solving a problem is actually realising that there's a problem. As is the same with you Fumps, i have no idea what makes up my playing either, i just play what i think sounds good for the song (which tends to be theoritacally correct as that's what sounds best) and i only know basic scales (Pentatonic major and minor, i think) although i have been reading Bass Guitar For Dummies to try and rectify this, with no luck. I think that you would probably benefit from learning theory in a much more hands on approach, actually being shown it and having the support from a good teacher showing you where you're making mistakes and where you're excelling. This is part of the reason i am seriously contemplating on getting Piano lessons, as it's an instrument i've always wanted to learn and will help with my bass playing, because i'll be entering as almost a complete novice, so i feel like i wont be fixing mistakes from my past. I'd be very surprised if that made sense to anyone, but if it does, and it helps, that's even better. Liam Edit: I have also tried that so called strange 4 finger technique, and use it on certain songs (Though 3 finger not 4) and it's quite fun actually, though it does feel a little awkward at first.
22.
Yep, I suffer from this too, usually when gigging. For me it depends on the volume of the music, if we are in a small venue and its all a bit loud, then everything sounds off, this is very un-nerving as I know I'm playing in the right key, but vocals and guitar sound off. Its something I am getting used too the more gigs we do. When we practice in the rehearsal room, I do not have this problem, I think this is due to the volume levels being much lower. When I bring this up with the rest of the band, they don't have the same problem and don't think we should turn down. I have recently started to use ear plugs to see if it helps, it does to a certain degree but wearing ear plugs does take some getting used to ( I feel isolated from the rest of the band and the audience). My hearing is starting to deteriorate and just put it down to this. Jas
E
Yep, I suffer from this too, usually when gigging. That way you can control your own volume and don't have the isolated effects of earplugs. I've experienced this once or twice (Not that i actually know what key i'm playing in) but not often. Liam
23. I use 1 bass for gigging, unless my 5 string is needed. though i do use 2 amps and no cabs (One being a combo, one being a head for gigs with a cab provided) Edit: Forgot the 25w combo sitting in my drummers house for our acoustic rehearsals. Liam
24. I'm sure i've seen one where there's a lot of detail about Fender serial numbers, but i haven't been able to find it again. Liam
