I've just noticed he's got the thing miked up...
Well, you've got to make sure you have enough volume haven't you? Liam

I have Cubase LE5 (came with my Alpha, as yours did) but much prefer Reaper. I find that my Alpha has too much latency for playing along with (if i'm monitoring through the PC that is) as it's i think 18miliseconds on both the input and output, but when monitoring directly it's fine. Liam

I have 3 at the moment (2 usable) but i want more. In my mind, theres i think 7, that i'd like to cover every eventuality, so my limit is probably around that (for now). Liam

Forming Bands for Underage musicians?
LiamPodmore replied to antonismbass's topic in General Discussion
Just found this in a search and thought i'd comment. When my main band started gigging i think i was 14, and i think the other members were 15 and 16. We were (and still are) getting driven to and from gigs by parents, and all our gear was bought through christmas/birthday presents etc... We did pretty well actually. We're still going now, but for the most part our gear is self funded (except our frontmans guitar and amp, as they're the same ones he had back when we started), and still being driven around by parents as there's only one of us passed a driving test, and that was only recently so he has no car or insurace yet. We were all just friends when we started, though i have recently had more success (still at a reasonably young age of 16) using joinmyband and i think i may have posted an ad or two on facebook pages which i got a reply to. First is my bass cover of P!nk's Funhouse: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIaEoqz5qCs 1986 Japanese Precision with EMG's through a Behringer BDI21 direct into my interface. And my bands first single: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpCJuBC7DLk Squier Jazz Deluxe V direct into the interface, then through IK Multimedia Ampeg SVX. Liam

Heard quite a lot of good things about these: http://www.red5audio.com/acatalog/Drum_Kit_Mics.html Scroll down to the RVD1 at the bottom. Liam

No idea on the difference (i'm no electro-tech-nerd, though i wish i was) but what i do know, is that the 18v pre-amp in a Musicman Bongo sounds f*cking HUGE!!!!!!!!!! Liam

Mag 300 with 1 2 x 10 cab enough for pubs and clubs?
LiamPodmore replied to JayPH's topic in Amps and Cabs
Never seen the MAG214 cabs before, seen the 414's but never 214's. That rig should be fine for Pub gigs, i do mine with a 150w 1x12 combo so i'd say that's plenty. If it's not enough, just get 2 of the standard MAG210's or a MAG410/414 for not that much on here. Liam -
If i had a car or lived in Oldham, this would be utter perfection for me. Been after another pop/punk project for a while, but female fronted so i'm a tad gutted. On a side note, i recognise her from somewhere, probably around Manchester or a gig or something like that. Liam
Bass Boost Pre-amp/overdrive pedal build - basically a tubescreamer circuit with 2nd op-amp chip driving an active treble and bass controls. Input cap modded to select normal or phat mode for fuller bass drive, via mini toggle switch. Switch is connected to bi-colour indicator LED to show mode selected. ...... 7. Finished pedal
Al, that looks and sounds absolutely f*cking phenomenal. I love the LED base plate, adds a really nice effect to the look, a few of those on a pedalboard would look brilliant.
.. and I had to google Jaret Reddick. And you should do the next one in Glaswegian.
We'll admit his name isn't that really well known, just take the p*ss out our guitarist a lot, and yes, so do i, it would make for an entertaining video. Thanks for watching, Liam

Went from a 4, to a 4, to a 5 (out of necessity) and now back to a 4. I still have 3 of those basses, and regularly use both 4 and 5 strings in different bands. Liam

I swapped from Roto Reds to Ernie Ball Slinkies and when i tried to go back, i found the rotos too rough, especially as i was also using Picato flats at the same time. Liam

I'd get my driving license, a car, and insurance. Though if we had to buy bass gear, it would be: A Squier VM Jazz (Natural/Black/Maple), Squier CV 50's Precision, Musicman Stingray 5 (White/Black/Maple), Barefaced Super 12, A Micro Head (Genz Streamliner, Markbass, Ashdown etc...) along with a Boss Tuner, Sansamp VT Deluxe, Line 6 Relay G50 with extra transmitters, octave, and get all my basses a really good setup, along with fixing my Ibanez. If there's any left over i'd get some more fun pedals (Synth, Source Audio BEF/BEF Pro with Hot Hand, etc...) That's what i'd do (assuming we're allowed to buy used, of course). Liam

Fender Precision Chrome Covers Disappointment
LiamPodmore replied to Hobbayne's topic in General Discussion
Sponge mute, eh..? *rummages around under sink*
Get rumaging! What i did was cut a strip off lengthways, abour 15-20mm wide, and then cut the rough green bit off at the bottom then just shoved it in the gap, so i can take it out and put it in as and when i need it (or when i think it sounds better) Liam -
A lot can be done with a minimal amount of mics. This guy only uses 4 (Audix D6 on the Kick, Audio Technica AT4040 overheads and an AE3000 on the snare) and i think he has some of the best sounding drum covers on youtube. His cymbals aren't always the best, but that snare sound is just perfect if you ask me. You can get a good sound with a lot more (for instance i quite like Cobus' sound, especially when he was using the Samson 8 kit, i think it's a little bit to processed now he's using anything between 14 and about 20 mics), but i like the open-ness of using a minimal amount. Fender Precision Chrome Covers Disappointment
LiamPodmore replied to Hobbayne's topic in General Discussion
But how do you palm mute..? You don't, is the likely answer I'm guessing!
You're correct there, I don't. I've got a sponge scourer under the pickup cover acting as a DIY mute, so i doubt palm muting as well would make that much more difference. If i really want to mute it a little more, i use my right hand, but that's not often. Liam -
Fender Precision Chrome Covers Disappointment
LiamPodmore replied to Hobbayne's topic in General Discussion
I actually like playing with mine on. I rest my thumb on the pickup cover when i'm playing, or play floating thumb. When i'm using a pick the bridge cover is a nice place to rest my hand. Looks like i'm in the minority. Liam -
Hi all, My band A Little Bit Outlaw have recently had another (much better i'd say) attempt at recording in our little DIY studio, this time an acoustic cover of Ke$ha's Tik Tok. Our singer (who did the video editing) has left the videos of me recording bass parts for the original cover in the video, whereas on the actual track we used there is no bass. We re-tracked everything except bass because it sounded like utter sh*te the first time, and we just left the bass out so it didn't clutter up the mix too much. Guitars: Matt Green and Louis Foulkes Vocals: Louis Foulkes and Marcus Johnson Percussion: Marcus Johnson Mixing/Mastering: Matt Green Pressing record/Making things work: Liam Podmore Video Editing: Louis Foulkes. Gear wise was just 2 Ibanez Acoustics, a Lexicon Alpha, a £14 Peavey Mic, a cymbal stand and a Sieve as a pop shield (worked better than i expected it to) Any tips on making things sound better (i'm going to buy an actual pop shield one of these days) and general comments would be greatly recieved. Thanks in advance, Liam
Was gonna suggest this too. I have one I'm not using. Just sits in my case, if ever i need it.
Even if it does sit in a case unused for years, £30 for a reliable backup solution, you can't complain. Liam

Behringer BDI21 if you want to add a bit of warmth. That's what i bought mine for and i find it works really well. Liam
"..two two..one two, one two.."
My bands vocalist did a much more fun version of this a few weeks ago "One two, one two, one two three four five, once i caught a fish alive, six seven eight nine ten, then i let it go again" Plays like butter? Has it got smooth, creamy tone to it as well? Liam

Increasing the scale of the string will f*ck up with the intonation and therefore lead to tuning problems. I can't think of a way to increase tension without changing strings (If there is, i'd love to hear it, my low B is really annoying) but i'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me will pop up with a better explanation. Congratulations Nick, you definately deserved that one, especially with playing like that. Liam
