2. http://www.bearstraps.com/ ... made in London, fab leather, great service. If the width's not enough, ask Rupert to do a custom.
3. Figured maple. Compressors. Music Mans. Weed.
4. 1982 Fender-logo Squier JV Jazz. Featherweight, neck to die for, played as slick as deer guts on a doorknob. Hesitated on the £450 price tag (all the money at the time even for a rare first issue), decided, went back... gooooooone. Never forgotten that damn bass. Inconsolable, that's what I am. 3am is generally the worst. But I write poetry.
5. I know a guy with one with the oak leaves, plays it with a pick in an alt.rock band. It's EXTREMELY heavy. Fabulous fat 60s/70s sound, though.
6. Ray LaMontagne pedal steeler = Eric Heywood, a magical master. Also great to see John Graboff mentioned, he is ace! PSG is a fascinating and addictive instrument, not at all impossible to play reasonably effectively if you have a good musical ear and some understanding of inversions and suchlike, but with more 'barriers' in your path than most others (in my opinion). Getting to a BJ Cole level would be a lifetime's undertaking but don't let that get to you. Horror stories about its notorious difficulty kept me away for years and then I met a mate, a guitarist who plays with Eric Heywood, who said that HE said you could learn the basics in an afternoon and it wasn't really hard at all... actually that was utter bollocks but I now understand why Heywood told him that as the most important thing is to get away from the fear, it's not THAT hard. So I bought an old Sho-Bud Pro 1 and mended it (another story) and now have done some album sessions and gigs and so forth. Not playing much at the mo as bass has taken over work-wise. The key IMO is 1) an hour a day without fail and 2) try to join a band within 6 months, it'll push you like nothing else. Re. Carter Starter as a beginner's steel - a mate has one, I've fixed it as best I can and they are fairly seriously flawed. A better choice would be a Stage One by Zum. However, on both of these the copedent (what the pedals and levers do) is fixed, you can't change it. A used pro-grade steel is a much better buy, but do get advice. Anything I can help with just ask
7. JV nut widths... I’ve got 42.2mm on a 1982 '57 and 42.6mm on a 1982 ’62.
8. ^That's way more than two pennies' worth of advice, it's excellent. As for me, I would find the finest '82 JV possible, for half the money. But you may already have one.

10. One new change is is that Vintage & Rare is no more (well, they've withdrawn to the Bath shop). The old V&R shop looks the same and some of the stock is decent vintage, but it's been taken over by Ron (ex-Reso Centre and more recently very much ex-Wunjo). V&R was always out of my price range... but if you took the time to chat, the level of knowledge in there was second to none. I miss it. I guess we should appreciate the remains of Denmark Street while it's still there. In less than 10 years the whole north side (maybe more) will have been taken over/redeveloped and the place will be a music themed tourist trap.
11. Explain it all to Orange and see what they say. They came through for me on a problem within warranty but caused solely by my utter stupidity. Ace service. You might be surprised.
12.
But he wasn't on the album
Oh man, I'm so dumb. Sorry!
13. Tony plays with two guys out of my band every Tuesday, if I ever pop over there I'll ask him...
14. Mine's done two years and about 120 shows. It's been totally reliable so far. I'll echo others' feelings on the SP212... I think you could do better. The amp I'd recommend 100% (though I add a pre for finer EQ control). The Bass Gear review was pretty good, check out their flat EQ settings info. 15. A mate has just been through a name battle with a big US emo star's new band. His blog on the situation went viral, and he won. http://www.twinfalls.co.uk/post/46359460181/how-dashboard-confessional-stole-my-identity-a

17. I'd go a for a used Epiphone Casino with a P or R prefix, which means made in Korea, Peerless factory. Should get one for £350-£425. Peerless got the shape right and the quality is good. They used the same jigs on the Peerless Songbird model, which pissed Epiphone off no end. They really are very useable, and if I had to retire my old ES330 I'd probably get one myself. (And rewind the pickups). Otherwise the Lennon Casino with the Grover tuners from about 4/5 years ago was a bit of a cut above the rest IMHO.
18. ^Interesting, just looked that up, but the bass that was stolen was a '66 sunburst P.
19. Over, under, or round the side?
20. Traded a pedal with Steve, excellent communication and speedy postage, 10/10.
21. Y'know I have a pitiful admission... I've a bit guilty of assuming Pino generally/often played the way/had the sound I associate with him in the Paul Young period (great for the times though that was)... Checked out some more recent clips via this thread, and jeez... what a monster cool player he can be. Gobsmacking. The drummer in my band played with Pino in several outfits in the 80s. Now he's got me... poor bastard. No wonder he's so grumpy and has turned to drink
22. The Studiospares -30dB works for me...
23. Funny one last night... my mate's band played in a pub and were sharply criticised afterwards by an older guy saying "You weren't nearly as good as last time, you weren't giving it everything." Then he apologised, thrust £25 into the singer's hands, said "Er... buy yourselves a drink!" and vanished. The band all agreed that eight dissatisfied punters like that would add up to quite a reasonable gig...
24. Not me. But I know a drummer who doesn't mind a bit having being replaced milliseconds before a huge '80s singles band broke, but really, really minds his one-time musical partner taking their co-invented stage double act and turning it into a multi-million pound internationally franchised show, without giving him a penny in recognition, ever. Harsh business…
