Are high end basses for investors or musicians?
pierreganseman replied to Pinball's topic in General Discussion
Hi Molan, absolutely right ! I cannot think of any brand of high end instruments that are "investment". In fact only fender i think could be called an investment these days bass wise I think. Jazz basses.... not P basses.... I only play bass as a living, produce a bit, doing home recording, teaching. Go on tour... bla bla the usual anonymous sideman i guess... I play nice basses wich cost me a LOT of restrictions, no holiday and / or a lot of teaching (if anyone's thinking I enjoy teaching Red hot chilli Peppers to a 15 year old kid who has a hard time playing 8th notes in time...well think again) or spending 6 month on a boat playing for drunk people. I don't think i could make more than 50 on any bass I have. And that's only if I can actually make something Overwater is to be considered high end basses I think : my overwater jazz 5 has a list price of about £3000 , after artist discount about £2100... I would be lucky to get more than £1500 If I had to sell it. Still you can find UK overwater for around £1000. Or sometimes less (one on forum now for £750) Mike lull P4 : bought for £1750 used , I could I think hope to get that back on a private deal. Not even close if sold through a shop cause of commission. List price of £3000 +... loss of £1250 for 1st owner. MTD 535 : bought £2100 used ... maybe i could get that back. That bass would be £3800 new.. that's a £1700 loss for the 1st owner. Two custom sei bass single cut : £3000 each (had a small artist discount from martin) ... I would be lucky to get £1800 each. More realistic price of around £1500 i think. That's a loss of £1500 on each. The only thing i could possibly make some money on is my fretless stingray 1979, but ONLY overtime. Like 5+ years cause prices have been going up a bit. In my books... that's nowhere close to being an investment................. -

This is interesting and is getting in the same vibe as it was on talkbass. People moaning and saying that it's a shame... that "no instrument carrying that price tag should be like this" that "no instrument is worth that much" that "why don't you buy a fender jazz bass , change every thing on it, after all it's the same woods, so its gonna sound the same", quite similar as the talkbass fashion "my SX is as good as your sadowsky" lol Wether JC reacted in a good or bad way, i would not know. Still on talkbass thread people giving names, writting that the guy quote is "a full on jerk" and more, i know i would have reacted too. That he'll never have a single USD from them. I am ready to bet more than 90% of people attacking him would have NEVER bought an Alleva- Copollo only cause fenders are better of course :-p . I can only say good things about those basses, I once was in contact with him, he answered professionally. If he's supposed to be a "full on jerk", what should be said about ken smith then? or Jeff Berlin? If spending huge money on modifying a fender is some one's thing, or what ever really... great... Alleva copollo has nothing to prove anymore as he managed to make one of the best "fender copy" I agree the bass is maybe questionable quality / finishing , but I find that giving names to one of the best modern / old school luthier, when people would have probably never bought one of his basses for various reason. Get over it, go play what ever .... Just leave the guy alone... this is not directed to any one in particular on this thread, just my personal opinion... -
I understand what you mean, very frustrating. I think the fact that Paul has enough pre-orders to keep him busy for the next 3-4 years is a contributory reason for the lack of response...but it's no excuse really. To play devils advocate I contacted Paul to inquire about placing an order about 12 months ago and he replied within 24 hours. Perhaps you have been unlucky?
Probably I have been, but the fact that the guy has enough back orders for the next 2 + years to come should not be an excuse to ignore some one saying "i have £2000 to give you as a deposit".... but that's maybe just me. This is valid for wal and a few more companies.... Wether a company is fully established or starting, every single customer should be considered / treated the same anyways, i know its bad on forums to give names when you are not happy about something , as some people always end up taking it personally for some reason = mess... so i will stop here....

Is the price of this MM Sub 5 justified?
pierreganseman replied to TheMissWolfiee's topic in General Discussion
i've seen 5 go for 400 + - and 4 for 375 .... lol -
This is just my personal experience, I am not slagging the guy down or what ever. As i Honestly don't care. Yes it seems companies who are totally established think it's ok to leave customers "out drying" when they exist thanks to us musicians (pro or not) , the people playing their instruments. The list of people I never got answer from , is huge and I have lost count... It is nice to see companies like Fodera after all the thing they've been through, answered me in 37 minutes some months ago...

I once emailed(as no answer on phone) Wal saying I had %50 deposit ready and wanted to make an order.... i got an answer 7 month alter asking if I was still into ordering one... well no... if that's how much you care about customers.... At that time I had two wal, i emailed them too (as no answer on phone) about question regarding servicing.... never got any answer.... Wal are now off my list... P.

NBD : Custom overwater contemporary jazz
pierreganseman replied to pierreganseman's topic in General Discussion
woaw.......... thanks... I am not sure what that meant but ok -
This jaco thing must stop. As Pat Metheny says "there will only ever be one jaco, I think people should get over it, and just leave his music as it is....." I agree a million percent , out of all the people i've seen play jaco stuff, maybe twice i thought "woaw this is actually nice" I respect the man and what he did for bass, but it must be left alone and listened to. Not butchered like most people do.... This is just my opinion, I totally respect the fact people would wanna learn it as personal challenge, so I am not trying at all to start a can of worm, or a fire. cheers
