Mine arrived today from Thomann. Out of the box it was very nice, after a quick set up (allen keys and truss-rod bar included), it was lovely. Will probably replace those strings with a set of Fat Beams though. I second the very helpful review from @BassAgent above. Thank you for your encouragement to go ahead with this. It plays well, no sharp frets,well finished and crucially no noise ! Thepickups and preamp are really quiet on all settings, in fact it was quieter than the one that I tried in Guitarguitar recently, so possibly a newer one. He told there's was a later model and they all sound like that. Hmmm! Slight negatives are the hardware does have a bit of a "Far Eastern" feel, (well it is) and there is a big drop in gain from active to passive. To be expected I suppose, however I can't see me using passive much unless the battery dies. Rehearsal tonight so I'll give it a proper test.

Selling this as it hasn’t seen much action action since I got my Sadowsky. Price reduced to £500:00. It’s in excellence condition and was originally a rather horrible blue burst colour. It had been stripped and nicely oil finished when I got it. It’s a later model USA made one which I think came just before the Cirrus. Controls are separate volume and blend knobs with stacked pots for treble/bass mid/mid sweep. The mid sweep is brilliant for quick tone changes. Overall it’s in great condition for an early’90s(?) bass. There is a little nick on the back of the neck by the heel and the gold hardware is showing signs of wear and tear. The stacked knobs look newer. I replaced the bass/treble one a few years ago and although everything works fine the mid/sweep one has lost it’s centre detents and will howl if turned up full. Otherwise the electrics are all quiet and the tonal range of this instrument is great. It hasn’t been gigged much. I have the original Peavey hard case, included in sale, but it came pretty battered with damaged corners and lives under the bed. I’ve used another cheap hard case It’s quite a beast; I reckon 10-11lbs, but quite well balanced and comfy on a wide strap and really nice to play, lowish action and nicely finished neck. Prefer not to post but you’re welcome to come and try it, although now I have a big box from Thomann, due to NBD on Wednesday, I'd be happy to courier this in the UK for cost. Specs: Maple body Through neck ebony fretboard pearl markers 34” scale 3 band eq 9v 24 frets 48mm nut string spacing about 18mm.

The one I tried was very light, possibly lighter than my 4 string US Jazz. I’d quite like one of these now and will probably buy one when funds allow

Thanks. That’s very encouraging. I have a USA standard Jazz and have rarely noticed a hum with it,except occasionally under some rehearsal studio lighting with my usual 80%/100% neck bridge split.

On reflection I really liked everything about theSadowsky, apart from the noisy pickups. Looking at the huge price hike from these to the Japanese or German built models (If you can find them) I think I’m planning to get a Tesco Express, when funds allow and if I find that they’re an issue fit a set of hum cancelling pickups: Dimarzio ultra J 5 seem a good match, and possibly a VTC retrofit. The aforementioned Sadowsky NYC owning chap at Guitarguitar reckoned that the ME was worth adding about £200 of upgrades. I may be flogging my Peavey TL5 but no idea what it’s worth, but I digress.

Mine was a VS Bassamp valve sound and electroluminescence. Bought from Macaris s/h around 1979 for £100 sold back to them 1984 for £100. -

True, though I would have thought a shop selling them would have a 'well the first batch were rubbish but they are sorting things out now and the batch we have hanging on the wall are really good,' rather than a 'the partnership hasn't worked and the new RSD ones don't feel like Sadowskys' view that was given to me. The guy in Glasgow pretty much said that. They sent the first batch back because they were pretty crap complained (to Sadowsky or Warwick I guess). The new ones are miles better and much more consistent quality. he owns a NYC and while they don’t really compare, his opinion is they’re still very good. He actually preempted my question and flagged up the noisy pickup issue to me.

I’d love to but my budget wouldn’t stretch to that unfortunately. just to muddy the waters I tried a Sandberg TT4Elektra, which was also lovely and probably better quality. The guy in the shop said you didn’t hear this from me but they’re likely to be bringing out a 5 string version, possibly in November. Not sure I could wait and no idea how much it’ll be. I also tried the new Charvel: nice but didn’t like the thin C type neck, gold hardware or loud B string

Curiosity got the better of me. we’re up in Edinburgh for the fringe so I took couple of hours out to head over to Guitarguitar in Glasgow. I tried a JJ metro express 5, one of the newer batch, and immediately loved it. Great set up out of the box, nice finish, Ok the chrome was that very shiny Far Eastern finish but frets, neck, controls etc were fine. It had a really nice even tone with a great B string balance. I really like the Sadowsky preamp tone. I was lucky enough to try it through a Markbass CMD102p, so same amp as mine however one hiccup: yep those noisy pickups! As soon as you move the balance knob either way off the centre detent it gets a bit noisy. I’m not sure that it’s a deal breaker for me though as I really like everything else on this bass. Bearing in mind that I was very happy to use it centred, I don’t think I’ve ever moved the one on my Peavey TL5 off centre, and even maybe later fitting a set of noiseless DiMarzios, about £130, would still make this an good bass for the money ? So do I pull the trigger ? Help I don’t know what to do! Incidentally Kyle at Guitarguitar was really helpful and knowledgeable and pointed out that they had sent most of the first batch back and that the newer ones are much better and more consistent.

£300? No thanks. However I had one of these; it was fairly decent. I swapped it about 25 years ago for some guitar lessons, about 50 quids worth which was a fair price. My guitar teacher was a brilliant luthier He drilled some big holes in it to make it lighter added a Seymour Duncan pickup and de fretted and refinished the no name jazz neck that I’d fitted to it in the late ‘70s. Made it into a really nice bass.
