  1. because it’s not a double blind experiment in lab conditions and is also subject to YT compression and god knows what else. If the experiment is done properly and the results are repeatable then I have no trouble in accepting them. Stage 2 will be to try to find out why 2 instruments that are identical in every way can sound different.
  2. Successful rehearsal. The ramp felt very natural under my fingers. Very happy!
  3. I've had identical Fender strats in the past - properly identical. And they sounded different. So if the pickups, strings, woods are all the same what is causing the difference? Only the wood grows differently. The others are made in controlled situations. There is no such control on a tree.
  4. Rehearsal complete. I like them a lot. Despite the marketing spiel they do sound like rounds, but they do have a nice tone and they are easy to play. Treble can be grindy if the amp is a bit dirty and the treble control is up, but they have a nice mellow tone too. Finger noise is impressively low for a round.
  5. Isn't the BB2 the same width as the Super Twin? If so - the Supertwin photos will give you the right idea, just crop the bottom cone out!
  6. It's when you rupture the tendon on the top surface of your finger so the end joint curls up and cannot straighten because there is no tendon attached to pull it back. I had a full year of therapy and splints and casts to get it back to about 70% function. Bit like this stock image
  7. It is. It arrived this morning and due to my measuring skills I thought it would at least need a bit of sanding here and there, but it fit perfectly straight away. Little does he know that I quite fancy a 5 string as well....
  8. Get a load of this wonderful bit of work... Even more amazing - @Andyjr1515 did it without ever seeing the bass. Just going on my own hamfisted measurements. It's a beautifully prepared bit of ebony, with cut outs for the pickup lugs and the scratchplate. It's held on with some double sided tape. I've always liked ramps, but they are more important now after suffering from a Mallet finger for a year. The ramp really helps when the finger won't properly obey my commands. And yes - I really do have the action that low / pickups that high. It's even lower when a string is fretted at the 22nd fret! Thanks again to Andy for an amazing job.
  9. I'm getting it because I like ramps! I really like Mr Sheehan but these days I don't try to play like him so I'm hoping it will just be a great if powerful P pickup.
  10. Greetings. What's your favourite cheese?
  11. I've never actually tried a Variax. I love the idea but I'm very picky about guitar specs and none of the available models really do it for me.
  12. As it happens I've just ordered one. Should arrive next week. It's going to get installed into a cheap shorty with a KiOgon loom.
  13. Get a Variax and a Helix then. You can footswitch strings on and off and even change their individual tunings. This demo shows how it's done
  14. Email Corey and ask him if they have a j sized version.
  15. This is what is making wonder about buying one. I'm not sure I can be arsed about hooking it up to a computer for deep editing. I never have a computer near where my amps are set up. The odd time to just download presets might be ok, but other than that... nah.
  16. Earlier ones were A/B. Then they swapped to D. I don't know when it happened but I've seen a few of both. If you find Thomas Eich on social media he usually answers questions about his stuff.
  17. I don't think I've read any comments anywhere from trigger finger sufferers for a fan fret. On a FF the stretches for the low notes are longer so if that is an issue a long or extra long scale FF won't the the right choice but a medium scale might be like the Ibanez EHB1005SMS medium scale. But I think you'd really have to try one. It might be that a traditional medium or short scale is a better choice.
  18. that's a nice looking thing. Don't think I've seen one before.
  19. That's a bit poor. I wonder why. Maybe Rotosound are doing a bit of a loss leader for the USA to try and increase market share. That can never last very long though.
  20. Sandberg Superlight. They are amazingly light - they aim for 3.6kg on the 5 strings but sometimes they come in at about 3.3kg. There's one in the classifieds at the moment.
  21. No - horrible things. Over priced at a quid!
  22. Dave bought my Tech 21 Steve Harris preamp pedal. All good! Thank you.
  23. But so what? Why even try to compare guitars with basses? The approach to string design is different. It's possible to have high or low tension strings of a certain gauge. It all depends on the construction. The core of a bass string is far larger than a guitar string. The wrap wires are different too. So needing a higher tension string for lower tuning does not have to mean an increase in gauge as long as the player is willing to use a different construction. As an extreme example - the new Hellborg signature set don't even have a metal core and as a result you can actually tie a knot in them like you would with cotton. There are enough custom string makers out there now to get any mix of hex or round core, large or small wrap wire, double wraps or single wraps etc etc. Ultimately it's just a bit of wood with some strings attached to it. It has unavoidable compromises but as long as the player isn't stuck in a "it must be d'addarip prosteels" mindset then there are options to resolve any tension issues, and more and more makers are making balanced tension sets. Shorter scale lengths are not a problem, nor a compromise. They are just different.
