The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!
fretmeister replied to Baloney Balderdash's topic in Bass Guitars
Every bass has its own tone and I wouldn't say a Bronco type bass would be a first choice for slappers even if it was 34 scale. But that tone has very little to do with scale length. I've had 32s that were far better than Dingwalls. Overall I think you can improve any bass for slap with a proper setup and the right strings - possibly a stiffer set to make up for the shorter scale reducing the natural bounce of a particular string gauge but ultimately you can't make an EBO sound like a J bass. The EBO will have it's own slap sound. Musicmasters and Bronco's have a central pickup and they are going to sound more like a slapped P bass. Can probably get a great 'Forget me nots' sound with a good set of steel rounds, but it won't ever sound like a modern active jazz type slap. I get a very modern slap out of my Ibby Mezzo 32, and I bet a good PJ or JJ at 30 inch would be just as good. -
Lovely! The DCB Aguilars are amazing.

I only went once. It was a nice place and Vic let me try just about everything I wanted. He was a knowledgeable host and made a decent cuppa!

Anyone got one? I'm thinking about a smallish combo for easy carrying, jams with a medium drummer and some acoustic instruments type thing. For when I don't want to take my Supertwin rig, and an easier fit in the car when there's more people in it. There won't be any PA support beyond vocals. Will it do the job?

Power Amps? The what the wherefore and why?
fretmeister replied to FarFromTheTrees's topic in Amps and Cabs
The advantage of keeping the LM3 is that if your pedals go down in a future gig you still have a working system to get you through to the end. -

Power Amps? The what the wherefore and why?
fretmeister replied to FarFromTheTrees's topic in Amps and Cabs
FX loops are generally for some types of FX pedals. Traditionally time based FX like chorus / delay / reverb etc. That way those FX are in the signal chain after the internal preamp Bass>Amp input> FX Send > reverb pedal > FX return. The most common approach for guitarists is to put overdrives / fuzz etc in front of the amp, and then the reverb / delays / chorus etc in the loop. But You can turn any amp with a loop into just a poweramp by sending a signal from something else - like your B7KU or a Line 6 Helix etc etc. Many bassists don't use the loop at all and just put all the pedals in front. Bass>pedals>amp. There's no rules really. It's all just options to find the tone you like best. -
Power Amps? The what the wherefore and why?

Possibly. Preamps and FX pedals are not the same thing so it depends on your entire signal chain. But you can experiment with the kit you have - run your BK7U straight into the FX Return on the LM3. That will bypass the LM3 preamp. -
Barefaced cab owners, what bass amp head do you use to power it.
fretmeister replied to Gray C's topic in Amps & Cabs
I'm now using my Supertwin with an Ashdown RM800 Evo2. It's now the only bass head I own and it seems to go with the cab very nicely. -

To use with a different preamp. A standard bass head has a Preamp and a Poweramp in it. But if you can't get what you want in a single box, having separates might get you there. -
Now I need £3000 as well!

7lb!!! Now I want one!

EBMM don't state the wood type anymore. That started when the extra light ash they were using for the Stingray Specials began to run out due to a wood infestation in the USA. Since then it's been "select hardwoods" on the description of the standard models. String spacing on the ray5 is 17.5mm at the bridge.

I bet they could cut the price in half and keep the same profit margins if they weren't paying New York rent. I've played a couple of them and although they were excellent they weren't any better built than a Marleaux for a quarter of the price (or lower).

This thought occurred a little while ago. At the moment my favourite bass is my Sandberg TT4. I love to play it. It's a Superlight so it's really easy. When playing at home I set it up for both pickups or the bridge pickup and get a trad jazz sound out of it. Then I get to rehearsals / gigs - playing the same songs that I've been practising at home, and all of a sudden I prefer a precision sound, if not a P bass itself as I like slimmer necks. There's just something more grindy about the P that fits better. Often I'll play the TT4 anyway but use the neck pickup only and EQ it completely differently to get close to a P sound. Or I'll take a precision. It is the same tunes / arrangement and I'm sure the good old Fletcher-Munson curve comes into play, and I suspect I play harder at gigs than at home too. Anyway, it was just a thought!

Has anyone used a Ampeg PF-350 Portaflex through a Barefaced ONE10t?
fretmeister replied to thebrig's topic in Amps and Cabs
I often use a One10 with my big band - medium loud drummer, and a load of brass / reeds. It's fine. I use a mid heavy precision sort of sound for that. Not massive amounts of lows. -
Shaved. Wait, what was the question?

For me it's the trombones. Noisy barstewards, the lot of them!

Only 12 months until my Lionel gets here.... Not that I'm counting down the days or anything! -
I like light strings. Either Ti Flats or D'Addario Pro Steels 40-100. Sometimes I'll use 35-95 Prosteels too but I never go heavier than 40-100 on a usual 34 scale bass.
