  1. Agreed. I can get a very similar tone with my Markbass head, flats and the back pickup on my Sandberg J but then it also needs all the compression in the world. And I'm sure there's a HPF going on as well as there isn't actually that much bass. I really want to try that sound with my big band. I usually play my J and adjust the pickup balance depending on the tune, but I have a hunch the JD sound might work quite well.
  2. I've heard some European builders use the word "mic" in place of pickup. So I doubt it's actually a microphone in the traditional sense.
  3. I was not aware. Thank you. Dear Wife, you know I said I wouldn't....
  4. Mine now has EMG X Series in it, with a stacked Bass and Treble and the ABCX active balance control. Much nicer than the stock pickups, and of course pretty much zero noise even with really high gain. Very happy!
  5. I like the black. Be nicer with a black pickup, but not a deal breaker. They still don't seem to be selling that model in the UK though, otherwise I'd probably be ordering one.
  6. I quite like it. I wonder if EBMM are going to make short scale strings available for sale now. And I noticed that the full size JD model is still using the older and heavier tuners, whereas the ray specials etc have the new lightweight ones. Wonder why.
  7. As I understand it - from 17th May pubs are only open for seated table service and that masks must be worn. No standing customers. Social distancing in place. Pubs are not considered entertainment venues like theatres etc so the 50% capacity type rules do not apply. So maybe apart from the acoustic guitar guys sitting (masked) in the corner providing background music to seated and masked patrons I don't think pub gigs are allowed before 21st June. I've sent the MU an email to ask for confirmation but try as I might, I can't read it any other way.
  8. Loads of really light stuff now. Almost everyone does a Class D amplifier head of similar weight. GR Bass and Barefaced make cabs that are even lighter, and as the speaker tech has moved on they sound better too.
  9. How are you finding the Joe Dart? I quite like the look of them.
  10. I like to walk around when practising, but bloody hell... that must be a long cable!
  11. For guitar use and for recording I went fully digital years ago - so I'm looking forward to hearing it. It would take a lot to pry me away from Helix, but you never know!
  12. Helix and the Fractal stuff does. I've not played a Kemper or a Neural QC, but the Neural plugins do. Component and signal path modelling is not new.
  13. Good point, I have corrected my post.
  14. Most Ibanez 5 strings are 45mm nut width. Splay out to 18 to 19mm at the bridge depending on model (some go down to 16.5mm at the bridge as pointed out below. I tend to forget about them as they are for weirdos with malformed fingers). Stingray 5 is 44.5mm (and it is noticeable) and splay out to 17.5mm at the bridge. So that stays narrower all the way up The Ibby neck is quite a lot shallower though. I have similar issues - my favourite 5 (for today anyway) is the Ibanez Mezzo. 32 scale, 45mm nut and 18mm at the bridge. Would have been even better with a 44.5mm nut but I can't have everything! The Mayones Hadrien Feraud is a tiny 43mm at the nut (according to the site) and 18mm at the bridge - that would be lovely for me but they are too heavy. And expensive!
  15. I have to play with fingers, pick, and a bit of slap so evening things out is what I'm looking for this time.
  16. Slightly off-topic - but how good is the compressor in the ABM heads? An ABM would be a lot heavier than my Mark Bass head but if I didn't need to take a compressor and a mild overdrive with me then perhaps the overall faffing about would be lower. I'm usually playing big band jazz stuff.
  17. I had the RH750 many years ago. There was something I didn't like about it (aside from the drive - I've never liked TC drive sounds). Just seems a bit meh. I loved the idea, the compressor, the EQ channels etc, but I never could get a sound I liked. Might have been the cabs I had (MB 1x12s I think). I'd like to try again with my current cab, but I have a bigger yearning for a big transformer amp. Maybe an ABM or something for a change.
  18. The new HB old iron head https://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_solidbass_600h.htm?ref=intl&shp=eyJjb3VudHJ5IjoiZ2IiLCJjdXJyZW5jeSI6NCwibGFuZ3VhZ2UiOiJlbiJ9&offid=1&affid=164 £199 + vat Looks suspiciously similar to the old original Ashdown MAG400 head.
  19. And yet the only human in history that could make double denim work was Lemmy.
  20. Your opinion is not a fact. I get it. You’re a Quo fanboi. That’s ok. But the rest of us don’t have to agree. You won’t change anyone’s mind.
  21. To be fair AC/DC did that as well, but managed to be good.
  22. I’ve got a 9lb 5 string. It was 9.5 before I put ultra light tuners in it. It took me years to find a 9.5lb one. Most are well over 10lb. I never play it though. I love the ray sound but it’s too heavy for me.
  23. I love them. I own loads, have sold even more. Was totally amazed by the new-ish Boss BC-1X. falls into the “it just works” category of ease of use. My favourite is probably the Empress though.
  24. I always take 2. Had to use spare once I think. But I also like to swap basses for some tunes.
