Markbass Little Marcus, what's the deal..
fretmeister replied to wildebassman's topic in Amps and Cabs
It's my main amp. And I've had the regular LM2 in the past. I use it for everything. With overdrives and other things for rock and metal, but most of the time with just a compressor for everything else. My version is the limited "Gold Line" version that removed the "Millerizer" control and replaced it with a 2 knob semi-parametric, but the rest of the amp is identical and I don't use that feature anyway. It is very punchy and can be warm and clear too. It is not darker than the regular LM2/3 - but the LM2/3 high EQ control was set at a completely pointless 10Khz. Unless a cab has a tweeter that control did nothing. The Marcus versions have a 5 band regular EQ rather than 4 and they are spaced better. The Ultra low control is now a little higher at 65hz - much better for cutting low end boominess in a bad room or on a cheap stage - and the Low Mid is closer at 180hz. This is particularly brilliant as that is where tight low end thump happens rather than flubby nonsense. It's also a good freq for EQ-ing to fit with a kick drum. The Mids / high mid and treble are also far better centred. The treble is now at 3.8Khz and that is perfect for either adding nice definition at the top or cutting it for an old fashioned sound. As I said in the other thread I think cab choice is going to have a bigger impact on the treble of a sound. My BF cabs go to 6Khz at the top without a tweeter. If I bought a tweeter equipped BF cab the top end would be at 20Khz. That's a massive difference. The official Marcus cabs all have tweeters. I can only think that it is youtube or the individual player that gives you the impression that it is a darker sounding amp. It is a very versatile amp. When I play metal I like a grindy treble Cliff Burton type sound and even though my cabs do not have tweeters it does that easily with a drive pedal. And it sounds great with a P bass, flatwounds and old RnB lines as well. Youtube vids might be going direct, might be getting post production EQ, might even be running into an IR of an old 18inch cab. Unless the youtuber shows all his signal chain and settings you just don't know. Don't know if it makes a difference but at the moment the basses I'm using with it are - from darkest to brightest... 1: Fender American Special Precision - Rotosound Monel flats 2: Sandberg California II TT4 Superlight (Active with EMGs) - GHS Pressurewounds 3: Modified EBMM Stingray 5 (Passive PJ pickups) - D'Addario nickels 4: Ibanez SRMD205 Mezzo 5 string - Warwick Black Label steels. Each bass sounds different with the amp. If it breaks - I will be buying another one. -

Not darker. EQ is much better. More bands and better freq centres. -
Power Attenuator........ any experience?
fretmeister replied to paulmcnamara's topic in Amps and Cabs
In that case - Weber Mini Mass. great little attenuator. I use mine on 50W guitar amps or under. -
There's free and there's worth having. I've not seen a free one that comes close to Neural DSP Fortin or Native plugins. I've recently put a little rig together - pair of Yamaha HS7 monitors, an old Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 and Reaper as my DAW. I already had a Helix so that allowed me to buy the Helix Native plug in at £99 rather than full price giving me a Helix in my PC as well. And as there was a spring sale I bought a couple of Neural DSP Fortin plug ins - the NTS guitar amp and the bass specific Parallax. Sounds great to me.

Don't have to use them like that. I just use mine to knock my mini JCM800 down a little for house use. No use at all on solid state though, and I think I read somewhere that they can even damage some SS amps. -
Sandberg for me. I did swap the pickups though - I wanted something like Bobby Vega's old jazz sound - he uses the original EMG J pickups so that what I put in mine. Very happy with it.

Lots of options. Amplitube free will import files from your library. YouTube via website will slow down songs. Almost every DAW will do it including free and low cost ones. Easy to import wave or mp3 files into a DAW. Can slow down without changing pitch everywhere now. Very common.

Sandberg VS4 passive. Ibanez Mezzo medium scale 4 string to go with the 5 I already have. Ashdown ABM 600 iv.

So you’re telling my wife I should keep the pair of One10 but also get SC? Just to make sure I’ve got the best option for the room? Ace! I’ll let her know.
-
This thread is making me wonder about swapping my pair of One10 for a pair of SC. Anyone done that swap? I play old big band so to hear the SC works with an old RnB sound seems a good fit.

That is right up my street! Thank you.

Used Sandberg TT4 is a great option. Superb build quality, great sounds.

Eich are super clean. Not much character at all. Great as a Poweramp or pedal platform but soulless on its own.

2012 American Special. slightly thinner body, lighter weight. About £600.

You can spec that on Warmoth stuff.

Zero-Mod Stingray Thumbrest Experience?
fretmeister replied to BruceBass3901's topic in Accessories and Misc
I've got one that I used to use on my stringray 5. It works very well. Comes with slightly longer screws for a good fit - make sure you keep the old ones for if you you remove it. I don't think anywhere outside of the USA stocks them - I think they direct sales / BBG / Ebay. -
Also - Behringer do a copy of the BDDI for about £35 It's almost indistinguishable from the original.

Mooer Radar IR loader. Really cheap, really good.
-
It's definitely 100 bigger!

The demo of the 6 is ok, but seriously, I'd love to just hear someone play some actual bass lines on one. Aretha Franklin / Otis Redding / The Who / etc etc

PSA: B-Stock Ashdown Geezer head cheap at PMT
fretmeister replied to fretmeister's topic in Amps and Cabs
I've never tried one but I like Geezer's sound, and the core ABM sound. I was slightly put off by the removal of the compressor, but then again I cannot remember what the ABM compressor is like, let alone whether like it or not! -
NBD: Ibanez SRMD205 Mezzo 5 string. Medium scale

https://www.pmtonline.co.uk/b-stock-ashdown-geezer-butler-head-of-doom-signature-amp#product-details That's nearly half price! If I wasn't banned from buying shiny things at the moment I'd have tried that.

If gigs remain banned I bet they'll be an exception for a band that writes songs praising Johnson.
