Finally watched the clip. The bassist was still classy when "overplaying" - until he slapped anyway - that didn't fit. His taste still came through. He should do it more often. It moved with the tune and gave it something interesting. Almost like the JS Bach approach to the low end.

I'm trying to see if I can raise the money for a new bass by selling off unused stuff. I'm torn between a Ray and a Jazz (Probably Fender Elite). The Ray will sound like a Ray. If it can do a passable Jazz with the splits then it would make the decision easier, even if finding the money would be more difficult. I usually play a 5 - but I've got 2 lovely 5 strings so I'm actually thinking more about a 4 for a change. Give the left hand an easier time of it too.

I've not played a HH ray with all the switching options. I'm quite curious as to how close to a jazz they can get.

I just watched Pete Thorn's vid demo of the Beat Buddy. Seems to be a great bit of kit. Not cheap, and of course there is the Pete Thorn effect that he could make a dog egg sound awesome, but even so - I think I want one!!

It can be. I play in a music trust orchestra and I have no idea what I'm going to get. before I joined (about 9 years ago) I didn't pay any attention to bass reading (sax was ok). I started to learn and not only do I not feel as much of a fraud as I did I'm also enjoying it far more. And of course actual notes give timing information whereas tab does not.

A friend was trying to give away a pretty good sofa on Gumtree. Free but collection only of course. Guy comes round to look at it. Likes it. Says he'll think about it. He's only got a Punto. Friend gets a call from the buyer to say he wants it. Lovely. Then says it won't fit in his Punto... so he needs to get a van. He the actually asks if my friend will pay to hire the van!!! Piano and sax, then guitar and bass. I still play some sax but I haven't even sat at a piano for 20 years. My youngest spawn is currently taking sax lessons so I get a good chance to play on her instrument when ever I feel like it.
