5 string advice. Very specific requirements though....
fretmeister replied to funkle's topic in Bass Guitars
Streamline 5 has 18mm spacing at the bridge as standard, or 16.5mm Custom. The OP has said he doesn't want 18mm, but I don't know if 16.5 would be too tight for him. It is for me! The nut width on a Streamline 5 is 48.2mm as well. That's 4mm wider than a Ray 5. That's why I don't own a 5 string Status. I'd have a Streamline 5 in a heartbeat if they did a Ray5 shape for it -
Can you get a good mids growl with the QPs? considering changing pickups myself
Not really. I've had them and I like them, but they are not a classic P bass sound. I've not tried the Steve Harris model - apparently that is like a proper one but with a bit more welly.
Slick. Expensive bass to mod, but slick.
The MM5 and the tuners were new. The rest I got used or in trades. If you weren't so far away you could pop round to try it. -

There you go. I also replaced the large plate tuners with Hipshot Ultralights and saved half a pound in weight. If you did the pickup mods with a 5HH already, then you wouldn't have anything you couldn't put back to stock. Mine was a single pickup version so the router had to come out. -
Possible. I considered it. But it costs a fair chunk to do that...getting the bass and the pickups/etc....out of interest, though, what pickups did you put in instead? The point of this thread is to find things I'm not aware of that are stock and meet my requirements. There may not be many things out there, but hopefully someone will know if there's stuff I haven't looked at.
I went with an EMG MM5 at the bridge and a 40DC at the neck, but I've just swapped that to a 40J. The MM5 is very different to the stock ray pickup. Far less clanky and more rounded. Tons of output but can still do subtle. The 40DC was good but a bit too fat for me, but the swap to the 40J was perfect. I've just got Vol, Vol, Tone in it. I had planned on putting the BQS system in when I had more money but I don't think I need it now. I'll find a pic in a mo. -

The ibby 5 string SR are 16.5mm spacing and 24 frets. Spacing is not adjustable. -

Do what I did then. Get a good Ray and replace the pickups and preamp. -
I have seen on in Bass Player a few years ago. Can't remember the make though. For some reason I'm remembering Phil Lesh on the cover.

This bass has a long Basschat history. I originally bought it as a fretted 4 from the much missed "Machinehead" shop roughly 14 years ago. I had it modified with the extra pickup (to allow Billy Sheehan type 2 amp use) and played it loads and I then bought a back up as well. This one needed a refret but as I had not owned a good fretless before I had Rob Green of Status make a brand new fretless neck for it. He did all the fitting work. Some time in (I think) 2013 I decided to sell it as I seem to have very little talent for fretless. I did miss it though, and in 2015 Ryan contacted me to offer me first disbs as he was moving it on. So I bought it back. It was still in fantastic condition for it's age. There are a few dings on the body as expected for what I think was originally a 1993 bass. I've been playing it in the house since 2015, but despite my best efforts I am not confident enough to take it out to gig, and anyway I usually gig with a 5 string. So, much like going back to an old girlfriend, it has been fun but there was a reason why I sold it in the first place, and it was perhaps wishful thinking that I would become comfortable enough on a fretless. The J pickups are the stock status ones, with a Volume, Balance, Tone pot. It's their treble system so it has a battery. The P is a SD Quarter Pounder and has it's own Volume and Tone control going to a separate output. The separate outputs are very useful if you like to muck about with using 2 amps at once or 2 FX chains. It currently has some nearly new Prosteels on it, but I've got a nicely settled set of flats to go in with the deal as well. Selling at £450 ono. Collection preferred from Northants, but could meet up somewhere too. Trades are certainly possible - [s]I'm looking for a nice light Precision. 8.5lb ish. Ideally a nice grindy sounding one. More Billy Sheehan than Jamerson![/s] Not looking for bass trades anymore. I need a Yamaha DXR10 powered wedge. ta
Aaah! Damn antocorrect. Meant Pino, not Pink. Imagine Pink in The Who?
When she's not doing chart pop she has an amazing voice. I'd pay to see that.

Under Pressure? -
He's a great bloke. A few years ago I emailed him a bunch of questions about compression use and didn't really expect him to answer - but he did, in great detail. Was very useful. Met him at a PMT shop when he was doing a Yamaha thing with Wes Borland. Nice chap.
Exactly. Has anyone really wrung everything there is out of 4 strings? And do you really need to?
Yes. I often get piano scores to play. Piano goes lower than a bass. And quite often shifting octaves ruins the general direction of the part. IMHO anyone who claims 4 is the original and thus the limit of the instrument should be reminded that the double bass started as a 3 string instrument. -
im curious, any thrash players on here?
Might be a daft newbie question, but what is the benefit of two channels?
Or blend clean with drive to add distortion without losing any low end at all.

Aguilar Tone Hammer 350 & 500 big price difference, why?
fretmeister replied to Osiris's topic in Amps and Cabs
More companies jumping on the 'brexit' philosophy and raising prices. There is no justification for raising the price of items that are already in stock . I hate big business!
Not quite right. Some don't actually pay the maker / distributors until the item is sold., and the contracts state it will the price at the sale time, not when the stock was received. Up until sale the item still being owned my makers or distributors and not the shop. I don't know if that is the case with Mesa & Westside, but it is more common than you think. If the shop goes bust it stops the gear going in the cheap fire sale. -

Westside are well known for controlling prices. And they won't warranty repair non EU (soon to be non U.K.) bought items, they are non even keen on U.K. Items outside of the warranty period. And Mesa won't release schematics to help local techs do non-warranty repairs. -
Thought I would share a bit more of my thinking and experimenting. Couldn't really understand why the neck profile on the '64 was so appealing. I play guitar too, and I can adapt to most shapes - some I prefer, some not, but not to this degree. So I did a very crude 'solder wire' based profile exercise. (Sad, I know..) Here we go: The '64 is clearly a flatter, slimmer, wider profile - but for me the biggest difference is less 'shoulder' I think combined with vintage frets and the 7.5" radius board, I have my answer. Maple or RW doesn't matter, I don't think. It's the neck profile, and to some extent the nut width (but not exclusively) Well there you go.
That's very interesting. I'll have to do that! It's a shoulder thing for me too, less is good.

I like maple necks and boards that only have an oil finish. Eventually they go really dark no matter what. Not a lot I can do about it, even with a wipe down. I'm not going to use anything more abrasive on an oil finish.
Different strokes for different folks I guess, aren't the scientists looking to cure cancer ambitious? Or the service men & women who learn to walk again after losing limbs? Ambition is there to serve you surely & the climbers who are still on Hillary's step? are they victims of ambition or the task?
I was taking the piss.
I agree, I suspect the wood / shape will not affect sound. Sustain maybe. Someone would need to swap all the innards / strings / necks etc over to do a test like that to prove it. I suspect someone in Japan is working on that right now ;-)
There is a YT vid where a guy does a neck comparison, and actually swaps the neck only to see maple v rosewood. Everything else remains the same.
