I've had a regular EMG P bass pickup and it was pretty good, I've had the QPs as well.. but my favourite is the Aguilar 60s model. Seems fuller and more balanced than the others. The EMG had more highs, and the QP had more bass and less mids - but did sound a bit muddy to me, and took it too far away from sounding like a precision.

No doubt. I'm just pointing out that there were plenty of other options. Quite useful if a UK stockist doesn't have stock or carry a particular line. And the last 3 things I bought from Bestbassgear sailed through without getting pinged.

Roto Jazz 77 flats are techically tapewounds according to their website. I just got a set an I'm loving them. They can be bright and brash (Steve Harris' favoured strings) but get nice and old school with the tone down. Tension is much higher than rounds though - my bass needed a big set up.

Hall of Fame is great. Lots of tone prints, and the editor is very useful too.

I don't find that at all. The 2 drive circuits are very different and the use of a tone control rather than swtiches makes it much more versatile than the pedals. No doubt that's why the V2 versions of the pedals have been changed to that option. I'm using the drive in big band. tone low, drive level low. Just a bit of vintage warmth - and I'm using the B3K circuit and not the vintage one. B15 tone all day long.

Andertons are huge. The shop is impressive - but the stock they hold and buying power is massive. I read somewhere that they hold about £5m of Gibson products in stock!!

I'm not a big user of octaves, but I love synths and filters. The new filters are very good and I can get close to my usual MXR. The synths are better too - but until they actually model the BSW that one will stay my favourite.

The trad Octave down seems a lot more stable under update 2.5 (and I liked it before) but there's still no polyphonic. Apparently that is planned for a future update but they don't say when. The new synth and filter options are huge fun though! the legacy overdrves and distortions are also very good for bass. Lots of options.

My P-Ray needed a fair bit of a set up as the tension was very different to the La Bella low tension flats I had. now I have a very low action - might have overdone it a bit! I’ll let it settle and then decide. Lovely tone though. Quite different to other flats!

Got a set and just put them on. Very nice!

Helix does have quick intuitive analog controls you can grab mid song. There's a specific button that always takes you back to the Amp settings display, and as the footswitches are capacitive you just have to touch (not press) one with a finger and that one will appear on the screen for adjustment.

Any good? Im on a bit of a Steve Harris trip at the moment and fancy trying them. Are they smooth? Or a bit textured?

I have never used a polyphonic on bass. I’m an old fashioned octave down person! ive done the update on the helix, when I got a chance I’ll see what happens with all the new fx.

M900 for me. At the moment my main gig is big band jazz and modern orchestral arrangements of pop tunes and film themes. The amp is superb

I copy it. Sometimes I have to learn 1 bar at a time, but I learn it properly. I think about changes after.

It's really easy for us string instrument people to get all annoyed about it, but the guitar industry is relatively small compared to others. I have no difficulty in trying to ensure the survival of the species so that means restrictions must apply to all. You'd hope that a journalist, even a music one, would look at the bigger picture.
