Why is is so hard to find a decent graphite neck?
fretmeister replied to roonjuice's topic in Bass Guitars
There's loads of them. All you have to do is put a WANTED advert up. Wanted: Graphite Neck. Will pay £1000 for the right neck. Job done. -
Not that I needed an excuse to trawl some bass vids...!

@Tech21NYC any ideas?
-
They do look great - but definitely a luxury buy! I imagine they'd be heavy even before being loaded with pedals. As someone who refuses to take a board any bigger than a Nano+ I doubt I'm their target market! Unless I suddenly get roadies!

If those are a bit steep then do not click this link... https://www.schmidtarray.com/product-page/sa600-1 The price does not include the lid either....

I am thinking about getting a new amp head. I am limiting my list to amps that have built in compressors for the moment in an attempt to reduce the amount of stuff I have to carry. Is anyone using a Reidmar 752? How are you finding it? Does the compressor actually compress properly or is it a bit on the crap side like Ashdown built in compressors? What's the fan noise like?

Ever bought gear you regretted buying?

Just thought of another one. Yamaha Attitude Mk3. The one I got at a very good price was astonishingly heavy. 12lb+. I love the Attitude basses (I gigged a Mk1 for ages) and I really wanted to love it. It had to go. -
Vai was ace but I have to say I thought the previous tour there with Phil Bynoe and Mike Keneally was better than Tony Mac and Billy Sheehan.

The colour clashes with your lawn. Either you'll have to pave it all or send the bass to me. I don't make the rules!

This. I once worked for Levi Strauss when they were still making iconic adverts and sponsoring everything that moved... Because of this I got free tickets to the Brit Awards one year. PJ Harvey did a duet with Bjork of the Stones' 'Satisfaction' using a mini synth (might have even been a stylophone!) and on the night there was a mixture of stunned silence and boos. It was fecking awful! It was broadcast the following night and there were massive cheers! Someone at the Brits must have a side gig at the Ministry of Truth.

I’ve been looking at these as I’m in the market for a combo with a compressor. The sound demos are good, but they are disappointingly heavy. AB power section and old school cones. They could have been half the weight.

How was Your rehearsal last morning or night ?

Pretty good. Working on a new tune for us, Count Basie’s “Splanky” Lovely walking bass part. -
Aside from the ding, that is a lovely looking thing!

Ernie Ball Group V Flats £24.95 on Amazon
fretmeister replied to Delberthot's topic in Accessories and Misc
They are excellent strings. They stay bright for a while so I do the hand cream thing to speed it up a bit. -
I like the HPF at the end. I take the view that pedals are designed to take the entire signal from the bass without anything missing, then I just cut off the problematic part. It doesn't work as well for me the other way. It's like not giving the pedals enough to work with. The compressor gives a clean and steady signal to the Octave so it doesn't matter that the filter is before it. I just like the sound of filter before octave much more than the other way round. I'm currently deciding which drive pedal stays on the board. So at the moment I have both a DG AO and an EBS Sheehan Ultimate. They are both amazing at low drive as well as the OTT stuff. But I can only fit one on with the others. I refuse to take anything more than a Nano+ board. Cannot be bothered with carrying anything more.
-
Its working fine. I'm using sort of Duck Dunn tone which is really all about the low mids rather than low bass. I'm competing with a lot of brass and reeds and I need to make sure the bass and the bari sax / bones all have room. The signal path is: Bass Filter Drive (Subtle for a bit of hair) Compressor Octave Thumpinator Mk1 Amp I set the octave so when it is on, the original signal is at a slightly lower volume than unity and let the octave signal take up the slack. When the thumpinator does it's thing on the really low notes that lower than usual original signal sounds just right, presumably because of the doubling. Dusty's live tone was absolutely filthy but I believe he ran his octave (MicroPog) and thumpinator parallel to the rest.
-
Yup. This is so well demonstrated when using Octave pedals. Copying Dusty Hill's approach I run a Thumpinator immediately after my OC-5. The Thumpinator cuts off everything lower than about a low B on a 5 string so I don't get any flub when playing E-A, and I don't have to turn it off when playing on the E string.

Help please! Markbass for pop-rock, which one to choose?
fretmeister replied to salaourtxe's topic in Amps and Cabs
I had an older 102P and I thought it was very good. It needed a drive pedal for heavier things, but the core tone was very nice. The tilt-back ability was very good for small stages so I could hear myself better too. If I was buying a combo again I'd want to try the new EBS Magni 502 2x10 as well. It's nearly 2kg lighter and has a built in compressor too. The prices are similar. I have not tried the MB58R amps or cabs. The cabs seem to be very big compared to their other ones. Not sure I'd fit one in my car. -

Hartke LH500 - just astonishingly meh. Dull beyond words. Loud is the only good thing. Almost every one I've seen in use has effectively been as a power amp for BDDI or Helix etc. Dingwall ABZ. Well built with a gutless sound. Not helped as at the time string choices were severely limited. Xotic SP Compressor. Hissy pile of stinky poo. Mesa Prodigy 4:88. Amazing tone, completely ruined by the loud-as-a-jet £2 cooling fan they used. There are dozens of really quiet fans and Mesa specced out a pile of derrière that would be rejected from the cheapest Wish.com PC. Totally ruined the experience of buying such an expensive product. Stupidly I tried to get on with it / tolerate it and was then too late to return it, and the distributors at the time were 'holes. Traded it as a shop and lost loads on it. -

Mark Bass AG1000 and a Barefaced Two10S. -
I’ve got a Cioks DC7 that has a USB power outlet on it.

Guitar demos sound very impressive. Price is the same as the Quad Cortex, now that the QC has dropped a bit today!

***SOLD*** Selling my Source Audio C4 pedal. It's a lovely bit of kit but I'm just not using it in my big band (what a surprise! ) and I bought a keyboard synth recently for recording with. It comes with the smartphone cable and the USB but not the annoyingly short cabled power supply as I have no idea where I put it. It can be powered from any good guitar power supply with centre neg and a minimum of 150mA flow. Not looking for any trades. £195 seems to be the going rate for a used one - or near offer. ta
