1. My very simple view of cabs has been that if I like the sound of a cab, and I want 'more' then get another of the same. Otherwise I'm getting 'more but different' In the 25 years or so I've been playing, I've only gone against that twice and on both occasions I was unhappy.
2. Mike Lull basses are very light too. Not played one myself, but Bryan Beller sounds great with his.
3. Whatever the song needs. Last band I was in didn't have a keys player so the bass covered that too. In an up to date top 40 band there are loads of tunes where a trad bass sound wouldn't work
4. Yup, the EBMM forum is very well known for the NO MODS, NO OTHER STRINGS EXIST, NO OTHER BASSES EXIST. YOU WILL BE DELETED! "Can anyone advise me on a good jazz bass?" "Buy a new Ray and learn to love it. - Thread locked"
5. Sounds pretty good to me, and at a good price. Certainly seems better than a lot of the similar priced competition, but then again PGS Andy makes everything sound brilliant!
6. I usually buy B strings separately as D'addario don't do I set where I like every string gauge. But I still change them all at the same time.
7.
For further conformation you could probably have posted the pic on the Ernie Ball forum, Sterling himself might have been able to confirm if it was some sort of prototype or trade show one-off. As others have pointed out it probably isn't either but those guys on the forum would have put you straight pretty quicky. Then probably banned you for posting a dodgy bass with an EB neck on it
I was recently on there and found a nice little vid of a chap who put EMGs in his Ray5. It got to about 3 replies before it was locked!! It sounded great though
8. 2nd in line please!
9. He's a well meaning bell end.
10. What a bargain!
11. I had a passive ABZ5 and it was very easy to play. The only reason I sold it was because I'm extremely selective about the strings I like and I couldn't get them long enough. But I would happily have a Super J which has a slightly shorter scale. I think the passive ones are a bit sterile sounding, but I'e also tried a Super J that was excellent - sounded like a very good active Jazz. The best option might be to pick a passive one and then add the onboard preamp of your choice - or even get someone like Nordstrand to make passive pickups for you that fit (They'll make anything) At some point I will own a Super J!
12. Got an iPhone? Then a Line6 sonic port and Amplitude
13. You should stick this on the fretboard as well - there's a few well-heeled guitar collectors on there. http://thefretboard.co.uk/
14. I had the White Nylons on a fretless first and lived them so much I got some more.
15. Abortion of Chips
16. Annoyingly I was all set to put an old set of Chromes on my Ray5 when I discovered that the D wasn't long enough anymore - it had been on something else and I'd cut it short. But I have now got La Bella White Nylons on it and it is sound fab! really full and plummy. I might end up keeping them on it.
17. Marshall VBC412 (12 rather than 10) Very underrated cab. One of my favourites. Pretty cheap used as well.
18. Never seen one either, and I was helping a mate look for a cheaper MM at the end of last year - we looked at everything. I reckon NJE is right and that it's a bitsa. Stay clear unless you actually want it.
19. I don't think I've ever played a Spector. That's very lovely though.
20. 16.5mm string spacing. Damn. I had that on a Status once. Was too tight for me. 17.5mm (as per my Ray5) is the tightest I can manage and I prefer a bit more room than that too.
21. It's not as "wonky" as there is only 1.5 inches different in scale from the sides. 35.5 to 34 A Dingwall is either 37 to 34 or 35 to 32 depending on model.
22. I find the Super J to sound far better than the AB series stuff.
23. I've just got a Ray 5 that came with ancient strings on it and they need changing I also have a selection of flats in my Trunk of Things. I have Chromes, TI Flats, La Bella White Nylons, D'Addario Black Nylons. So I'll give them all a try over the next few weeks
24.
You might want to look through the Talkbass threads on that amp, thermal issues have been mentioned at least a few times. The latest pics I've seen seem to show a bigger heatsink, so hopefully it's all sorted by now. I'm really looking forward to checking one out, but it's likely to be a few months before that happens. When I built my own amp last year it was intended just for practice or very low key EUB jazz gigs. At least one very experienced engineer told me I needed to use a fan, but he also admitted to having no experience with the particular ICE module I used, which is not common in bass amps at all, and not the one Demeter uses (the one I used is bigger and more expensive, intended for pro PA duty, and requires more outboard parts). I added some heatsinking just to play it safe, and have ended up using this amp in a few fairly loud rock situations with no problems so far.
The new Demeters are in a bigger chassis too, as well as the bigger heat sink.
