Depends a lot on the amp. If you have a valve in the preamp (or solid state drive function) then any increased input signal will give more grit. but if you have an FX loop then you get a level boost after the preamp stage. So something like the TC Spark / Suhr Koko Boost / DOD BiFET Preamp etc etc in the loop will give you an increase in volume without a tone change unless you actually want one. Sometimes a boost is not about increasing the volume equally, but making it cut more. So sometimes a mid boost is better than a flat boost. A good EQ pedal gives you both options.

I have a TM5 and it's brilliant. I actually bought it as a backup to my Marleaux, but they are so different it has become another first choice, depending on the job. The only thing I would say is that they can be quite heavy, so try them out and take your scales!

Another vote for Bergantino here. Either the CN112 (1x12) or the CN212 (2x12) I love them - and they seem to work with a variety of amps. I have 3 very different sounding amps and the Berg cabs play nice with them all.

If Fender had simply re-badged the Shuttle and Streamliner amps then it would have been fine. Instead they discontinued some of the best modern amps in the world and only made a half-arsed attempt of using the tech in the Fender's own amps.

I like them too, but I find them to suit some basses far better than others. Great on my Precision and on my Marleaux, but horrible on my Sandberg TM5.

^ Can't argue with that. Ishibashi has a couple of Moon basses used at the moment. Excellent basses just without a Fender logo on them

I got my Jap Precision directly from Japan. It was used and in great condition. It's been a few years but I'm pretty sure it was about £575 ish including shipping. If you want a Jap Fender then get one from Ishibashi or one of the well respected Japanese ebay sellers. Ishibashi have new and used stock - you just have to move quick when you see something you want. Top service from those guys.

I've got an Urge 2 which I really like, but I'm as clueless as you are! Are the electronics in the Urge 1 the same as the Urge 2? Or did they get cheaper with the 2?

I do it because I love to play music with other people. I'm long passed any ideas of being paid properly for it so I tend to try to look for things that will be fun or will increase my musical knowledge. I don't really care if there is an audience or not anymore. -
I did the same - had a RH750 but it wasn't the sound in my head. Then I got a 9.2 and all was well with the world!
