  1. Sounds nice. I wonder how scary the price is!
  2. The Barefaced One10 is now available with a Tweeter. If that floats your boat.
  3. MSL aren't the right people anymore. https://www.realelectronics.co.uk/SR07_Repairs_Submit.aspx
  4. There's active pickups and then there's active EQ systems. They are different things. Active pickups - like EMGs - have small preamps built into each pickup to help boost the signal. EMG magnets are low powered to reduce string pull and inductance so they need the little boost to the signal to get it up to a useful level. They actually come with passive tone controls. But additional active EQ / preamp can be added to it. Active preamps / EQ is the stuff that happens after the pickup in the signal chain. It's usually Bass/Treble, or Bass/Middle/Treble sometimes with frequency knobs too. In general, most preamps/EQ can be added to whatever pickups you have. But there are exceptions. Some of the EMG Preamps can only be used with EMG pickups. Strings - EB Cobalt Flats are very bright. Very close to a roundwound string. Might be worth a try. Another solution that I particularly like is a good bass overdrive pedal with a clean blend. I set it to a very low drive level that I notice more when I turn it off. The overdrive emphasises the harmonic content in the signal a bit more and makes it appear brighter but also more complex / thicker. If you have a listen to Isolated Bass tracks on youtube for famous songs you'll discover that some of the sounds that seem really clean in a mix are actually a farty overdriven quite dirty tone when on its own. Queen's John Deacon's P bass tone is a great example. It sounds deep and thuddy - it is a P with flats - but it also sounds wide and full with enough cut through. The isolated tracks are a real eye opener. It's pretty much a horrible bass tone on its own! But perfect in the mix. My big band do a version of "Don't Stop Me Now" and it just wasn't sounding right until I chucked some farty drive on it. As an aside - it's a cracking bass part.
  5. Turns out I had a set of new DTF in my spares bag. They are now installed and sounding good. I’ll let it settle over night before I tweak the truss rod.
  6. I played the Lionel in anger for the first time today. Lovely to play, but I’m definitely swapping to flats for this bass. As good as it sounds with steel rounds it’s just wrong to play Duck Dunn parts without thumpy flats! I might try some of the Fender flats. Never tried them before.
  7. I once sold a Status. I missed it every day. After about 5 years I found it and bought it back. I rediscovered why I sold it. I sold it again no more than 3 months later.
  8. Basically, you set the sensitivity of the spring system in the back. So little things like gripping too hard won't change the pitch at all, but a definite effort like bending a string will. Told you - it's witchcraft!
  9. You could get Newtone to make them for you. They have a choice of core and wrap wire. IIRC it's the 'platinum' series that is advertised as a lower noise / smaller wrap wire option. They will make any length you want. Just follow the measuring instructions carefully and about 2 weeks later a set will arrive. Very nice strings!
  10. I don't know if they are long enough but the DR Pure Blues are very smooth for a round. Or maybe have a look at the Elixir coated ones? I've not tried them for bass but I like them on guitar.
  11. The MB is my modern RnB, Marcus, super low end amp. The RM is my more traditional, P bass with a pick / Duck Dunn / Old RnB amp.
  12. Not true. It can be set up to allow some “tuning” variation like bending notes. But it will then always return to original pitch even if the string has been stretched. The official guitar videos are ok, but the best one I saw was on a Devin Townsend rig rundown type thing. I’ll see if I can find it.
  13. no, that’s not it. If you pluck a sting hard then the initial attack is slightly sharp and then it settles. If you squeeze a string on the board too hard it goes out of tune. If you inadvertently bend a string it goes sharp. Doesnt matter how well your bass is set up, it does it. It may not matter to you. But with this bridge it does not happen. It maintains tension even if you try a hard bend on a string to TRY and bend by a tone (if you set it up that way) it will not change pitch while you bend. Of course you might not see a need. But think beyond your use. What happens if you are duplicating a piano or synth part and the bass note gets the entirely normal Pitch Arc with the initial attack being a little sharp compared to the other instrument and it annoys you on the recording. That just won’t happen with this bridge. It’s not just tuning stability, it’s tuning maintenance no matter hard or soft how you play. I won’t need it, but I can see how it could be very useful for a recording bass. If I was in the market to replace my recording guitar I’d have the guitar version in a heartbeat.
  14. On my home made Nordymutes I cut the foam to be pointy. So pushing it on more means a greater surface area, and pulling it off a bit means a smaller surface area doing the muting. It works quite well and is easily adjustable on the fly.
  15. I have an RM800 Evo2 and a Mark Bass AG1000 (and I've had the LM3 in the past) I don't think they sound very similar at all. They are both great amps, and I really like both of them, but I don't hear many similarities in tone.
  16. @basstone The version I played is the Murtha one I used this as the backing for my video. It misses out the repeats, presumably to get the youtube vid smaller. I've got a scan of the bass part somewhere if you want a copy.
  17. Yes - plastic ones. I got about 100 of them for a few quid. The foam was self-adhesive draft excluder. It worked very well. I must have some of the sticks somewhere. I know I didn't use 100 of them!
  18. Zoot Suit Riot. It's a big band arrangement of a vocal tune by the Cherry Poppin' Daddies. This is the original
  19. I had previously made some homemade versions of the Nordy mute, but I cannot find them anywhere! Probably where all my other safe-place stuff is!
  20. I'm trying to make my shortie my main bass for everything - so I've got some foam too. I love the thump from La Bella DTF but they are pretty useless for brighter stuff. So I've got Hi-Beams on it with some foam that I can easily remove. First rehearsal with the Lionel is on Saturday. Looking forward to it.
  21. Has anyone tried the Mono Sleeve guitar version for a shortie? The Sandberg case that came with my Lionel would fit a long scale. I could just cut the top off...
  22. My new ACS plugs arrived today and they fit perfectly. Rehearsal is on Saturday so I'll give them a test run then.
  23. It's a small staff. Maybe they were all serving customers.
