  1. https://bergantino.com/super-pre/ Looks interesting!
  2. If I could just get 20 brass and reed players to buy a PA that would be my choice too.
  3. Sometimes it is the combination of the amp and a separate preamp that is the only way to get to the wanted sound. Viewing them as separate things rather than as elements of the entire signal path isn't always the right approach. I really like Mark Bass heads but they are at the clean end of the spectrum. Sometimes a preamp pedal is used as an overdrive but with a more capable EQ for the drive to give a different type of overall amp sound. But it's a combination of the pedal and the preamp in the head that I really like. Going into the FX return or a power amp doesn't sound as good to my ears. TBH I'd pass a law that ordered every potential venue on earth to have a good PA system so I only had to take a pedal with me in the first place!
  4. I'm selling this wonderful Barefaced Super Twin gen 3 (the latest / current version, built before the cosmetic logo change) with the very posh official padded cover. It's a fantastic cab and it's total overkill for my ever decreasing live music needs so it's time to move it on. I'm the first owner and I got it in August 2020. (Yay lockdown). Since then it has lived a life of gentle use in a jazz big band. Gigs have been in school hall / theatre type venues for the most part, and when I took it to the only big outdoor gig we've had since lockdown it turned out there was a another band's di/amp etc that I was invited to use instead so the ST didn't even get used on that occasion. (They could have told me before hand, but that's a rant for another day). There's a couple of marks on it that I've tried to photograph but nothing that a tiny bit of black paint wouldn't solve. Full specs are here: https://barefacedaudio.com/collections/12xn-bass-cabs/products/super-twin But the greatest hits are: 1200W handling 4ohms Tilt back wheels Only 18kg! A new one would now set you back £1395 including the cover. I'm looking for £950 or near offer. EDIT: I've had a look at others that have sold recently and I've over-done it a bit so: £875.00 ish. PRICE DROP: £800 collected. That's £595 cheaper than a new one! PRICE DROP: £750. No offers / trades at that price. This is now £645 cheaper than a new one! Avoid waiting for several months and save some money! This is collection only from Northants - sort of halfway between J15A and J16 off the M1. Welcome to come and try it out. Kettle will be on. Bring your favourite bass if you like. trades: I’d consider a nice and light (absolute max 7.5lb but the lower the better) Sandberg California II VS4 or VT4. Active or passive, don’t mind. ta
  5. User error... designer error... it's all the same
  6. I like the same. Demeter 800D head doesn't have a fan Ashdown RM800 Evo2 does have a fan but it is very very quiet and only turns up at louder volumes - Apparently the brand new fan system upgrade on the Ashdown ABM Evo 5 750 is equally quiet. That new system is supposed to be in newly built ABM 600 Evo4 as well. The V2 versions of the Darkglass 900W amps are reactive so the fans only turn on when needed. Not tried one myself yet. Tech21 VT500 is reactive and didn't turn on at all at home volumes when I had one. Only turned on at rehearsal / gig volumes. Many of the Phil Jones models do not use a fan Some Trickfish heads don't have one either.
  7. Mansons guitar builders is continuing - but most of that is now owned by Matt Bellamy.
  8. Enjoy the low weight! No shoulder or back pain, and if there are any tonal differences there's nothing that can't be solved with some EQ.
  9. @agedhorse You awake yet? Or are you hungover from watching the colonial junior rugby?
  10. Free The Tone Flight Time Providence Chrono delay
  11. That’s only because you haven’t used up to date speaker tech. A modern 210 can be louder than an old tech 410. And to be honest, if you need more then it’s far more efficient and effective to put it in the PA and make the on stage cab just a monitor.
  12. A lot of new 210 are designed to be used vertically. It’s just a better orientation for horizontal sound spread.
  13. I do. At least once a month I think my Ashdown has packed in and get really upset and then I remember to check the little headphone out switch that mutes the speaker outs…
  14. They are parallel so two 4 ohms are 2 ohms total load. You should set the amp to 2 ohms. If it’s still working ok don’t worry. Amp designers often build in a bit of user error into the specs!
  15. Just delivery. That’s on top of the picks.
  16. I don't think boomy is the right word. A P bass is all about the mids and a jazz is always a bit scooped when using both pickups but a J does have more tonal options. Just moving to the neck pickup alone brings back plenty of mids, but they can be balanced with the bridge pickup and set 3/4 balance. Until I had my finger injury I used my fingers for almost everything aside from tracks that just sound wrong without a pick. I never got the same type of attack as with a pick, but I still got an aggressive attack partly due to string impact with the frets. It's definitely a different sound and whether it works depends a lot on what the rest of the band are doing. There's hardly any P bass types used in really heavy modern metal as they get flubby / undefined very quickly. But with a more traditional gain level a P can cut through because of that mid focused tone. Steve Harris plays a P with fingers and flats and cuts through 3 guitars every night. Can you borrow a J to try it at a rehearsal before you spend any money?
  17. I'd like to try those. But their own website shows they are sold out and I can't find a UK dealer.
  18. I’m thinking about swapping my Super Twin for a Two10 to save a bit more room, and because I slightly prefer my One10 tone with my favourite Mark Bass head. I don’t need the monstrous volume and low end of the ST either for my big band. I don’t usually have cabs with tweeters, but now that it is an option on the x10 cabs I’m thinking about it. Mainly for curiosity reasons. Has anyone got a x10 cab with a tweeter? Is it a good tweeter or is it a hissy pile of @rse like some of the Markbass tweeters are? Ta.
  19. I’m going to get a set and try them.
  20. Just play it in the different position! It will only take a few runs to get it right. This is how people change keys for every other instrument!
  21. A Barefaced Super Twin would be just the job. Bit more expensive though, but you mind find a used one.
  22. With a tweeter it probably goes up to 16Khz to 20Khz. Without it probably tops out at about 5Khz. If you cannot defeat the tweeter that could be a clacky pile of derrière unless you want to be Marcus Miller. Or Fieldy. For some reason. Every 8x10 sounds different even if they are all sealed. Make it ported and add a tweeter and it's even more different. The beauty in the Ampeg is that by any objective standard it's an absolutely sh1te design with massive compromises. And that's what gives it its unique character. There's not a lot of bass, the mids are farty when driven by an SVT and there's not a lot of top end. Often sounds crap on its own... and then amazing when the rest of the band get rolling. I get the feeling that if you buy anything else - even the Barefaced - you will still have that itch to scratch and you won't be happy until you have an Ampeg. Set up an ebay notification for an Ampeg and put wanted adverts up on here and on thefretboard.co.uk and maybe even email your local rehearsal studios and equipment hire places. Somebody will be looking to get rid of one before long. From a practicality POV they are as useless as guitar 4x12 cabs have become. They are selling for peanuts as well. Get the Ampeg while you are still young enough to move it about!
  23. It happens when the wood dries over the years. Quite normal. Doesn't costs a lot to get them sanded down. I've tried it myself but I could never get the ends as smooth as a pro would. Me using a £5 set of Amazon brand files probably didn't help!
