Gearing up for a second listen to these... it's tough to compare the 100% organic versions with with the "added ingredients" versions. (Apples and, er, genetically-modified oranges?) I'll might limit my shortlist to those in the opposite camp to mine, then I won't be swayed by my enduring affection for own version ;-)

Hi, I wouldn't be in a rush to ditch Garageband. It's famously newbie-friendly, and I recently learnt that Donald Fagen does his demos using it! However if you buy a new interface you may find it's bundled with a cut-down/trail version of another DAW, so you'd be able to play/explore/compare with GB before taking the plunge.

This is fascinating - I never knew that South African dude that shot his girlfriend was a bass player.

Daft Pun (Tribute Bands with Inventive Names)
ras52 replied to cloudburst's topic in General Discussion
Also, not a tribute as such but the name made me chortle, while in a pub in Woolacoombe there was an ad for a mariachi band called 'Juan Direction'
Weren't they a tribute to that other well-known band, Wand Erection? -
Sorry, lost in translation. Could you expand on 'EDM', please, for the littl'uns amongst us..?
I can play 'E' and 'D', but I've never heard of 'M'...

Lordy this is tough. After a week or so of intimate acquaintance with my own version, all the others sound "wrong"! I'll come back next week and see if I can be more objective...

Software for editing & mastering live/rehearsal recordings
ras52 replied to Junkyard Rocket's topic in General Discussion
Hm, the OP wants to do two things, editing and mastering. The editing - which as I understand in this case is splittling and top-and-tailing - can be done with less-complex software such as Goldwave and Audacity. As for mastering... how long is a piece of potentially-very-sophisticated string? -

Audacity (free) is good for editing. -
Had a crack at this today. I have no idea what I'm going to do about the drums though.. May just leave as is.
Yes, I'm approaching this a simple mixing exercise rather than a full-blown editiing/reworking job. Are you mapping it to a click track? (Was it recorded to a click track?)

Chris = Squire; Basses = Squier. That is all.

Oh oh oh! I've just recently stumbled back to Basschat, and to discover this! Great to see all this love for what is probably my favourite band ever. And it seems I'm not the only bass player who loves this band with no bass player :-O

I found this neat little intro to K-metering: And this this standalone meter: http://code.mzuther.de/kmeter/

Hi all, thanks for the tips. I meant "something like" normalising, as I knew Audicity has a long list of effects (I just use it for topping/tailing and, er, normalising...). But it doesn't include K-14 :-( However I've grabbed Reaper and may just be able to tame it enough for that final step! I've been away from here for a while as I've been writing more than bassing, but this has led to demo-ing, and that led me to remember these competitions... I'm looking at this one as an opportunity to practise rather than to trounce you all in a competition!
-
Hello! I'm late to this particular party but will be on the lookout next time around, as practising my mixing would be A Good Thing. My question now relates to this K-14 business... at the moment I have a very primitive setup with Pro Tools SE, which AFAIK doesn't allow the use of any external plugins. Could I work around this by e.g. normalising the mix in Audacity? (I do plan on getting "Proper" Pro Tools at some point...)
The biggest problem with fretless players is that Jaco set such a precedent with how people now perceive the fretless bass should be played. In reality we all play bass differently, we all choose different notes and rhythmic figures that encompass our own musicality. By Jeff Berlin's logic, every fretted Jazz bass player should sound the same too. But they don't.
+1

Chords, double/triple stops & how they work....
ras52 replied to Rumble's topic in Theory and Technique
I would both agree and disagree. You might not play triple stopped chords in a band situation very often or at all. However, learning to comp with just some basic shell voicings, or voicings with 3, 7 and a tension allows you to hear the harmony with greater clarity. For example, you can better hear guide tone lines and smooth voice leading between chords, which you can incorporate in your single note lines to great effect. Learning the basics of comping also allows you to hear and recognise what the pianist/guitarist is doing and respond accordingly.
+1 Even if you never play chords with a band, your study of them will pay off. -
Be known, have cards printed with a link to a web page with samples of your work, network network network, including events targeted at your potential employers, e.g. songwriters. Get to know local recording engineers, as they'll be able to say "I know someone who could play bass on your demo..." to their clients. Re money, people have mentioned the MU but it's not a closed shop and you may find yourself pricing yourself out of the market if you ask for MU rates without a track record. Be flexible, but don't work for free! (And join the MU anyway.)

Is the title of this thread a red herring? You don't say if you have trouble making up non-slap lines, so I wonder how the articulation - which differentiates slap from finger/pick - is a factor. Typical slap will emply large intervals - octaves, tenths - so are you comfortable with those in a non-slap context? Perhaps look for exerices in 10ths and work on those non-slap and slap. Have fun!
