Perhaps they're "rare" as in "not well done"
-
Pretty much echoing all the stuff here. At the risk of veering off topic, no one's mention fretless yet: the Precision is the classic fretted bass, but fretless it seems a rarer animal... is the Jazz "the" fretless bass is the way that the P is "the" fretted bass?

Sold Overwater by Tanglewood Classic Jazz Sold
ras52 replied to waveydavy's topic in Basses For Sale
[sub]I haven't really considered trading the tanglewater- feel free to make a trade offer . [/sub] [sub]Location- North Tyneside.[/sub] [sub]Cheers Dave[/sub]
Would you take a large bag of GAS? I played some of the range at the London show this year, and someone's in for a treat. (Can't justify it being me though, even given my growing predilection for P/Js with matching headstocks... yum yum.) -
Well, thanks to the Basschat GAS effect, this thread has cost me £50 (including P&P), as I now have an OC-2 off that eBay. Nice toy - certainly. Will I use it in the heat of battle - possibly. I like the sound with octave 1 and dry at 12-o'clock. With the dry rolled off a bit and octave boosted by the same amount it might find service being punched in to fake some low notes as I haven't quite yet joined the five-string camp! I noticed that if play a sustained note on the G-string, the "octaved" note dies quite quickly - is this a common issue?

Precision scratchplate ponderings - colours, screwholes
ras52 replied to ras52's topic in Bass Guitars
OK, so at least I've found a way to unify the Basschat community Fear not, I was never planning on anything destructive, and on reflection agree that the "aged" white wouldn't look good with tort anyway. (The "aged" red staining on the back from its long rest in a plush case during my sabbatical is another matter!) There's another interesting thread lurking here... what does your choice of colour say about you? My favoured basses are and have been either natural or black, so it feels weird taking this one out. Yet, viewing it as a classic workhorse, it's the only one I held on to when I hung up my bass playing boots about 20 years ago. -
The TC Flashback has a mode where the delayed signal is suppressed while you're playing and then comes up to fill the spaces between your playing - that might get close to what you're looking for. http://www.tcelectronic.com/flashback.asp

Hi, here's the scratchplate (or pickguard) of my 77-ish P: I love this bass but have never been happy that it looks like the "Sid Vicious Signature Model". Then I saw this, and thought, "Hm, white+tort looks OK... maybe a change of scratchplate would work some magic". Not so sure about tort with maple though: So hit me with your ideas of what might be tasty (bearing in mind that mine is now clotted cream rather than white)... And then I counted my screws As with what appears to be the current standard, I have 13, but I'm one short on the top (where the thumb-rest was) and instead have one in the middle! So would a replacement plate actually fit without modifying the bass, which I want to keep as original as possible?
being a fan of Bootsy, I have to say this is not him at his best.....and why would anyone want to replicate that sound.
And why is the guitarist wearing a nappy?
And actually relevant to the thread: "I don't need to EQ my amp, my giant digital effects board will sort all that out for me" (paraphrased from a guitarist I jammed with).
Translation: there's point in EQ-ing my amp, because once the signal's gone through my giant digital effects board it'll be f***ed up beyond repair.
Its for those that play with their thumb, and not in a thwackity thwack kind of way.
I never knew Craig Conlon played bass!

From last night, rehearsing a work-in-progress original. Much confusion over the sequence of sections (instrumental chorus, "the bit where it goes to D", etc etc). After the third attempt where all five us seem to think something different is supposed to happen, I suggest that we get a piece of paper and write it down. The guitarist says, "Don't write it down... I won't read it."
£1500ish
I think the world is pretty much your oyster here. Down my way - Bromley - £300 pd including engineer was the going rate for a studio which was cosy but big enough for us, with the same lineup as you. I can post a link to the results if you like.

According to Mr Google, Thurrock is a mere 40' drive from my abode. Bye bye, wallet. But I hear the hot chocolate is good.

Ooh, nice! I was initially disappointed that it wasn't the Jackson Five song... and then pleasantly surprised that it was the Jackson Five song after all! But whose version?
Ps the traditional bass transpose key is C (for double bass) as some of the higher notes in D might be a little hard to reach
As in this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bach-Cello-Suites-arranged-Double/dp/0577082353/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1323339111&sr=8-1. Gold!

I'm a big fan of the Schubb Talon. Holds the bass more upright than the Hercules and folds down really flat. But, like the Herc or more so, great for home and sedate rehearsals but... not to be trusted in a "busy" envioronment.
I've got 3, one goes in the gig bag and the other 2 hold up the basses at home. You do need to be careful sometimes on stage where the strap can sometimes get caught under it..no big deal you just look silly for a few seconds.
Ah, how many us dream of looking silly on stage for only a few seconds!

Thanks for the responses guys. Double-parking sounds like the fun option. As does the trolley. As some others have posted, I'd be more concerned with moisture than hot/cold. I may occasionally leave it there with the intention of going back the next day to get it (and then realising a week later than I haven't! )

I park on the street outside my house... if I'm lucky. If not, I park further down the street... or even in the next street. Being lucky late in the evening is sadly quite rare. Now, on those unlucky occasions, would you leave a cab in the boot of the car (out of sight, natch)? Winter is icumen in, and I wonder if the poor thing could be damaged by being left out in the cold.

Yep, I like 'em. And works with my Jazz - a G&L JB-2 - no problem

I just found out about this - bummer! Like others on this thread I regret that I never made it to the shop, but I'm glad to have met you, and fondled your four-strings, at the London bass show earlier this year. Best wishes for the future.
Whoah, they is remarkably cheap. Definitely worth a punt. What do Status consider "long scale" and "medium scale"? I'm your regular sort of 34" guy :-)
What sort of person asks a question like that without following the "string information" link first? Pffft.

Great strings and very good value as well. Just go to the online shop bit and the strings are in there. A quick eBay search for BOSS OC in completed listings shows both OC-2s and OC-3s going for around £45-£55 + P&P. (And there's one optimistic listing for an OC-2 with a starting bid of $295! Martin Sims, just outside Ashford. I took a fretless for a re-shoot/re-lacquering, and threw in another bass needing a setup. Martin took the time to talk me through the various options and generally inspired confidence. As it happens I just got a call saying they were ready, so if you can hang on I can give you a verdict later! (Probably going down at the weekend.)
