1.
I've had a pair of otherwise identical instruments with some wood differences and there was a clear difference.
Yep! I have two Peavey Zodiacs.. one is the DE model, the other is a BXP.. I thought they were identical until I put Entwistle neo pickups in both (and the same strings, Elixir stainless). They are noticeably different! The white one sounds more aggressive in the upper mids and the black one sounds "cleaner", more solid. The difference is even bigger once you apply some overdrive. Since the body woods are both painted and glossed the only thing I can think of as being different is the wood underneath!
2. I wouldn't know, auditioning for metal bands just means you'd better be able to blag your way through the set, and that your metallica t shirt is one from an album that came out before 1990... And doesn't stink so badly that they can smell you coming before they see you
3.
It's childish and nobody's mind get changed.
Bugger! After my experience changed my mind I was hoping it would change everyone else's Unfortunately, I pre agreed to share an amp head for a gig I'm doing this Sunday, but that will be that last one.. and they're only borrowing the solid state one so it can't get fudged!
4.
Well as my Ashdown has died for the 2nd time in the past few years I thought I'd get something cheap for now. Comes with a three year warranty so if anything does happen at least it's covered
Worth a bash! Then again second hand Hartke LH500s are probably not much more if you want something that's tried and tested
5. Changing patches can be a bit fiddly at first, but it's not too difficult once you get the hang of it! You hold one footswitch down to go to "patch mode" then just tap another to cycle through them. I use mine as part of a pedalboard because I prefer the drive sounds I get from the Darkglass, and the noise gate is ok but I wanted something a bit better plus the extra space on the zoom
6. I want to see a monster head on top of it looking tiny
7.
Me too, but I add 'Thanks for coming'
Haha yeah I say that too a fair bit, cause these days just leaving the house seems such a hassle!
8. A felt pick? That's interesting, I didn't know they existed... I'm guessing you get that solid pick sound without as much attack?
9. I saw a band on Friday and I'm sure the bass player was using one of these. Wasn't very loud in the mix (crap venue, worse sound engineer) but the sound seemed fine. Certainly heard worse amps for substantially more money!
10. I've learnt the best way ever to deal with compliments, because as was said above, people in the black country are stupidly friendly and you have to get used to it fast! I just offer a grin, a handshake, and say "Thanks, really glad you enjoyed it!"
11. Resurrecting an old thread here because of last night's gig! It was a multi band night, and all the bands and promoter had discussed equipment share beforehand. My band headlined, so would be sharing drum shells and cabinets. I made it very clear that I am happy to share my cabinet but nothing else. Night was going well to begin with and while the second band were setting up I went up to go to the bar. I come back down and see that the bass player is using my amp, after being told not to! Then as the courteous dick heads that they are they scarpered off home as soon as they finished, not supporting the remaining 3 bands. Then it was brought my my attention that the reason he had no power out of my 400w valve head was because he'd spent the entire half hour set playing into it with the speaker cable disconnected!! So, for all the guys who wonder just how you can damage an amp there is your answer! By some miracle when I tested the head nothing appeared to be broken... A testament to old Peavey gear... But I'll be crossing my fingers in the hope that everything stays ok.. Still! It angered me so much that this band had disrespect us so much, and my gear had been abused and potentially destroyed, in my slightly tipsy state I did send the band page a lengthy message containing a few F words Anyway, this is why I never ever let anybody use my amp head, and neither should you!!
12. I use Markbass cabs and prefer them to any other mass produced ones I've tried. I really don't like Ampeg any more! To compare the two, MB will be insanely louder, and you will actually get some upper mids/treble through over the guitars and drums
13.
This. Given that it has to have pickups, basses with nowhere to rest your thumb must be deliberately designed to be that way! Why??
Literally the only reason I don't own a Rickenbacker is because they're so hard to play fingerstyle... It's nothing to do with me being a cheapskate.. honest
14. Active electronics, nowhere to rest your thumb, and neck dive!
15. Elixirs are the only strings I've used that retain that zinginess for more than three gigs, and I've tried nearly all of them!
16.
I had it in rehearsal the other day. The rehearsal rig was farting out as our bassist had raised the lowest slider on the graphic EQ to the max. I asked him to cut it to minimum, and the only difference was that everything was immediately clearer, and the amp/cab stopped distorting. Despite this, everyone else in the band agreed that it was no longer bassy enough, and that the slider (30Hz I think) had to go back to the top. I guess this is how rehearsal rigs get knackered.
Sounds like another case of people wanting distortion but not realising there are pedals for that!
17.
Look forward to comments on the [s]wife[/s] Thumpinator
the missus hasn't thumped me for a while, I must be doing something right
18.
bad things happen.
Thanks for that! Im guessing risk of fire or electrocution of something??
19.
the other comment I've seen about them is toaster or non toaster pickups. is the much difference tonally or is it mostly aesthetics?
The blade pickups are meant to give a brighter sound with higher output. I've not played a toaster style one to compare but I can confirm that on mine the output is very hot! Similar to my basses that have Entwistle neodymium pickups in
20. the amp and cabs will try to produce frequencies even lower than 30hz that you'll never actually hear too, which wastes a lot of power and gets the speakers moving more than they really need to which might be contributing to the farting out... The SFX Thumpinator is supposed to help with this. I've not got mine yet so I can't comment from experience, but it might be worth trying one!
21. Yep! Apparently you can't if your amp has a valve power stage, but I don't know why
22. Damn this thing could replace my entire rig. Thank God I'm skint!
23. They vary a lot! If you get a late 70s one they weigh a fair bit and the slab body might not be comfortable to some....mine is an '83 and with the comfortable body contour... not too heavy either! Sound is fantastic, super high output, and they're very comfortable to play too
24.
I was blocking the wifi for the entire set!!
Yeah my stageclix does that. I see it as a bonus if it stops people looking at their phones all night
25. Christ that is insanely good value. Im quite tempted by the cab for home use but dont know if I can justify it!
