Surely, all other things being equal, the heavier the string string the higher the tension required to achieve the same note?
Yes. Which is why on my bass tuned to A I have a .152 gauge, i prefer it to feel nice and tight
I've found that the same gauge of string will have less tension if it's strung through the bridge and more tension if it's strung through the body. No scientific reasoning for this, just experience.
Definitely. All of my basses have the option to string through the body or the bridge so I can 100% confirm this. It's to do with the break angle of the string being much more extreme when through body stringing. As I mentioned above, the angle of the headstock can play a part too. As can using those string tree thingies you get on Fenders

My first bass was a peavey, I own three of them now. No other neck feels right!

Normally I need a 35" scale and a .130 for the B to sound right.. But ive just acquired a 34" 5 string with what I think is a .130 on it and it feels/sounds perfect! The angle of the headstock, and whether it's strung through the body or the bridge have a part to play in it I think Personally on a 33"er I'd get a .135 B string but you could get away with less

Thanks deej! I was planning to keep my sansamp and Marshall pedals anyway... Possibly my tuner too as the LCD screen on the M9 looks like it won't be so easy to read on a gig! I'm supposed to be convincing myself not to get more stuff but... Never quite works out

My pitchblack tunes perfectly and quickly all the way down to a low A... Probably much lower too!

I'm thinking of getting rid of some of my pedals for a Line 6 M9. Mainly for Delay/Reverb, chorus, and phaser... Does anyone have any experience with them? What are the compression models like? Im using an Agular TLC at the moment so not expecting to be blown away! And would there be a dirt setting that could replace the Bass Big Muff Pi?

That bass looks great! Should be ideal for you if you already had a 475 and liked it. Glad they managed to cut you a deal to make good all the crap you had to deal with Being one of the first to get it you might have to give it a review on here when it arrives!
Just noticed this topic got bumped. I actually got (or am going to get, in the near future) a great deal on the new, not-yet-released Ibanez BTB 575. (The bass is shown on the USA Ibanez site though) It's apparently being released at NAMM later this month, in America. Or at least that was the information from the rep of the place that distributes Ibanez's within the UK. I also got put through a lot of bulls**t (to be specific, my bass got sent off for repairs 5 months ago and I have just got a credit refund for it) so they're trying their best to get it to me even earlier than is available to most people, and for a lot cheaper too (around £399)! But thank you for all the recommendations, I checked them all out before finally being offered the above by the nice guys at PMT.
The LM3 has an upgraded limiter in it which apparently isnt as harsh as the LM2's (never tried an LM3 so I can't comment on it). I think there's a pre/post EQ switch for the DI out as well
To be honest I don't have a scooby but they should sue Sue Ryder Guitars for logo copyright.
Ditto

New rig time.. choices and opinions requested
chrismuzz replied to Machines's topic in Amps and Cabs
Gotta also recommend Markbass dude! If you like warmth go for the LM heads with.. Well any of the wide selection of cabs they've got, or their 2x10 combo which is more than gig worthy on it's own -

They look ok... But why are Fender so obsessed with white pickguards?

Christ, erm... I started off playing the violin in lower school, learning nursery rhymes and other relatively simple stuff. Lessons ended because not enough of the kids had enough of an attention span to actually practice the bloody thing! Middle school - Had two drum lessons, both of which were spent solely learning how to hold the sticks 'properly', and was not allowed to actually touch or even hear the drums... So I lost interest! Started a new school where, for some bizarre reason, they expected everyone to be a proficient pianist and singer... We didn't have 'lessons' on them, we were just told to play/sing stuff with no assistant whatsoever... That went well..... Also even more bizarrely, and much to my horror, recorder lessons were compulsory! And how I hate hearing 'Hot Cross Buns' on that god awful thing! The bane of my existence! A few years later in high school, I took up trumpet lessons. I got pretty OK at it but as none of the music I listened to at the time involved any trumpet playing, it just became a chore, and I eventually lost interest in playing an instrument... ...until I was about 14 years old and my uncle turned up with a Squier Strat (which I still have. Cracking guitar!), Kustom practice amp, and even an instructional CD Rom! Had a whale of a time cracking on with the lessons, learning songs, jamming and thinking I was a teenage rockstar (in my bedroom anyway!) I cottoned on to the fact that said uncle was a bass player, and I slowly became more and more intrigued by this mysterious instrument... The curiosity became a longing, which grew and grew! Especially the moment I heard Metallica's early stuff, Cliff Burton, and the wonder that was the bass solo!.. Then at the age of 16 my best mate who was currently in a band said to me "Dude we need a bass player, you can already play guitar, so give it a go!". That was all the excuse I needed! Turned up to a rehearsal, using a borrowed bass (it's actualy the 4 string Peavey International that's still in my possession!), and loved it! Never felt so natural to me! Spoke to my uncle about it who seemed to be over the moon! (He must have been, as he lent me his Limited Edition Ibanez Musician for ... like ages.. And what a bass to start on!). And yeah, I never looked back! I fell in love with the bass so easily that I pretty much let my hard earned guitar skills completely go to waste... Can't play the thing to save my life now even if i do like to have a tinkle from time to time! 8 years later and I'm still holding down the low end proudly! I er... hope I didn't bore anyone to death

Ibanez GVB1006 Gerald Veasley 6-String Signature Bass
chrismuzz replied to Dood's topic in Bass Guitars
My Peavey 6er has i believe a 16.5mm spacing which is fantastic! Don't think i could go any thinner than that really as i have a fairly aggressive right hand at times, plus I have to be careful with my (quite limited) tapping as it is! I would definately give one of those Ibanez basses a go sometime if I saw one though -
Personally, I have a thing about sticking to one type of bass, hence my obsession with Peaveys, so would go with the Fender if I was in your position.... But then again, you're not me... AND you've always wanted that Danelectro DC! Have you tried it out yet?
-
If you liked the sound of Trace Elliot it's a good place to start My first amp was a Laney 2x10 combo which was awesome but for metal gigs needed an extension cabinet... Ashdown stuff is nice too, and cheap second hand! Have a nose around the for sale section on here, basschatters seem incapable of not offering the best deals out there!
-
Never used them myself as I like using open strings. I guess I would do it if I was recording something in segments and there were parts without any! Still, I once heard people refer to scrunches used in this fashion as 'fag rags' which made me chuckle

Now that is seriously cool! Never seen anything like it before. Congrats!
