That tuning sounds terrifying! I would personally try playing in a standard BEADG tuning, but if that proves difficult to play some of the riffs you may have to match the guitar tunings. You should be fine if you buy a really light 4 string set, maybe 90 - 70 - 50 - 30 or thereabouts, then put a standard 125/130 B string on the bottom. Someone else with a bit more experience with tuning UP may be able to offer better advice Tuning up shouldn't cause you any problems in the neck, but it's likely that you will need to get your bass set-up, preferably by an experienced tech.

The photo says that the seller is a pure sadist. But to me it's the pinnacle of hilarity. Does this make me a bad person? -

Cheers for this! So so sad.. -
It's probably a good thing you cleared that up, I could see how that may have been unclear Back to the OP. Personally I'd be shocked that the bass wasn't better protected, and you're very lucky that it wasn't damaged. But I would also have seen the case as 'extra', or as just shipping item. I fully understand your assumption as it wasn't totally clear. Hopefully you will still be able to resolve the situation in a positive way, considering you're both BCers, most of which are fab people from what i've seen!

You could very well do that, I was in a band in college with 2 bass players (we were a very rare class with an overabundance!), and we both went into the same amp at a gig. All you have to do is make sure the volume levels are the same which isn't as tough a job if you're the only bassist! If you use effects, you should either politely ask the sound guy to use the DI out on your amp (if you're not polite he might accidentally on purpose make you sound like ass!)

Hear hear, Johnston!

I play elites, and they have red ribbon at the ball end, and blue at the tuner end so I'm pretty sure those are the ones you're looking for I don't know about the nickel ones but I use the steels and they have an amazing bright sound

I play a 6 string bass tuned down to A, in a very loud metal band with 2 guitarists. My MarkBass 104HF destroys everything in it's path on fairly low volume with no PA support. And that's running just 1 8ohm cab with a 500w head. If anything you'll be turning the bass knob DOWN! I'm almost scared to buy a 2nd cab! \m/

Fingers for me! Due to spending many years playing bass 'wrong' I attack the strings quite hard which creates an aggressive tone somewhere in between a pick and a slap which fits my style perfectly! I used to play with a pick for faster parts as I found it easier, but due to some teenage anti-plec snobbery i stuck to fingers for so long that I physically can't play with one any more lol.

Reviving a dead thread here... But is the Poly mode totally useless to a 6 string player tuned ADGCFBb?

OMG BARGAIN!!!!

With my tight string spacing I have to use the 40 sized pickups, which fit perfectly into the cavity luckily. I'm definately open to hearing what your friend can do, and of course the Kent Armstrong pickups. I didn't consider them originally because I assumed I'd have trouble getting hold of them. Also, tell me the damage, how much would a set of either set me back? lol Cheers
-
EMG HZ are passive yeah, but usually are equipped in basses with active preamps so I've not heard them on their own yet. Thanks very much for the offer man that's very kind but the Grind has an insanely tight string spacing and so it actually takes EMG 40 sized pickups instead. Have you ever used them on a bass without active electronics?
-
Hi fellow low-enders, I've been meaning to upgrade the pickups in my 6 string Peavey Grind for some time now. I can tweak a nice enough tone if I really mess with the EQ, but it is very much on the muddy side. It seems my options are very limited by the fact that I am not an active pickups kinda guy. The 2 options I'm looking at at the moment are EMG-HZs, or Seymour Duncan Basslines as they both seem to have the same dimensions. I've heard the Seymour Duncans on youtube, but have not heard of anyone using EMG-HZs without an astive preamp yet. I was just wondering if anyone has had any experiences with either of these and if they're any good? Or possibly has some other suggestions that would fit the cavity (I'd prefer not to have to do any routing). Any input would be awesome. Cheers!

Yeah I reckon it's definately the Markbass shutdown circuit. If the fan isn't working then the head is more likely to overheat, but thanks to that it just shuts it down instead of causing any actual damage Since I started checking the fan every time I use it I've had zero problems. And since I take the least time to set up out of anyone in my band it's not much of an inconvenience!
-
Personal opinion here, but I'd choose a Jazz every time! They just play great, and can achieve that growly tone I've always dreamt about
-
I use an F1 head, and also have had it cut out on me once, luckily it was during a practice! Same issue as you described with the fan not working. What I do now is check the fan every time I turn it on. i'd say 1/3 of the time the fan does not come on, and I have to stick a key into the hole to flick the fan and encourage it to start working. No problems after that It's a bit of a pain in the arse but if you check it every time you shouldn't have any more problems!

The old bassist of the band I recently joined approached me at a gig, and told me that I could play better than him. It made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside because I actually regard him as a fairly good player and was fairly nervous about playing in front of him! ...Though to be honest I still think he just couldn't hear me properly
-
I'd go for a wide strap. Levy's make the best straps in the world (and no i'm not an employee haha )
-
Yeah I wasn't expecting much haha. But I thought it'd be ok for a band setting in the meantime while I'm on a budget. I'll leave it in my setup for now while I get to grips with using compression... Plus it'll push me to save for something like an ebs multicomp haha
-
Must..... Increase.... Compression.... Ratio!!!!!
