Could it be a Rickenbacker copy that has been modified to avoid litigation?

I replaced the pickups in my 2006 MIM with pickups taken from a standard US Fender and it sounds superb.

I swap between 4 and 5. I prefer the feel of the 4, and swap to the 5 for just a few songs where I need those low notes.

I used to have similar problems, as my favoured bass sound had the EQ set in the old V formation with heavily boosted bass and treble. The G and D strings disappeared above about the 5th fret. I decided to start again from scratch with level EQ, then adjust slowly to get an even sound across all the strings. I put the EQ flat, and the problem was solved immediately - so I didn't bother with any more fiddling. Maybe that would be a good start for you - turn the filters off, set the EQ flat and maybe that will give you what you want.

Back in the late 60s I had an old Egmond Lucky 6 which had a single pickup that was actually screwed to the neck rather than the body!

I would recommend the Line 6 Backtrack with mic - simple to configure using preset settings. It records my loudish rock band at gig levels with no over-recording at all. If you want to hear some stuff recorded at rehearsals and gigs, drop me a line and I'll send you a link.
