1.
Here's the thing: beans on toast cooked by me = average run of the mill, tasty snack Beans in toast cooked by Heston Blumenthal = hugely expensive designer food... With Fodera you are paying for the chef's name even if the ingredients are the same as used in any other 'dish' - though what a great chef can do with simple ingredients, or arguably the best ingredients, is, in theory, something really special. At the end of the day I've played lots of Foderas over the years - some were amazing some were ok - I wouldn't pay 7K for any of them - end of.
A point well made. I know it's a typo but beans IN toast does sound like a Heston Blumenthal dish. You may be on to something!
2. I'm reminded of that famous video (think it was a Zildjan Drum Day or sim) with Weckl, Colauita and Gadd. The first two were heavy in thrills and chops and Gadd absolutely shone with feel and taste beyond comparison. 3 unique, or at least instantly recognisable, voices in the drum world at that time.
3.
Dude - gorgeous! The scratchplate is a v nice touch I think. And it's defo an EARLY Korean cos it's got the skinny tuners which (IIRC) were only fitted in the first few months of the Skyline series - my now departed 55-02 (Oh Christina, she never writes, never calls... ) I bought new sometime in 2002 and it already had the cloverleaf tuners (IMHO they look better - they were Hipshot Ultralights if you ever fancy the change - it makes them look more like the US Laklands if you like that kinda thang )
She sends her love :-)
4. I also had a s/h Columbus Jazz bass bought for me by my Dad back around '82 for £75. I have a picture of me playing it but it'll never make it to here!! :-)
5. I bought "Je suis un Popstar" when I was a nipper (I had bad taste in music even back then!)
6. Terrible news. Thoughts and condolences to his family and friends.
7. He could do with my vote, I could do with his gigs. Ah well I'll do my bit
8. I had no idea- big mainstream success with their first album. Heavy play listing etc. Enjoy the gig :-)
9.
The production of the first album was really sweet. Drums sounded awesome. Dunno what happened to them. Ah well.
Biiiiig drum sound on that opening track! Everything sounded expensive. Slightly OT but in a similar 'big first album but what happened next' kind of way, what ever happened to The Feeling?
10.
So true - 'Shoot To Thrill' has the simplest bassline, but the inverted note in the 2nd chorus (2:06) is the most perfect way to lift the song. Such simple variation makes a big difference to the feel.
The whole album is quite simply essential play-along-listening. I recommend it to anyone who is learning to play the bass. I sat and plonked along to it when it was released and it taught me soo much about bass playing (and rock/pop music as a whole) One of my classic albums of all time.
11.
Go for 80s party tunes such as Wham or Black Lace. Agadoo for the kids. And if you get the whole room on the floor singing We Are Sailing you know you've suceeded in getting a call back
Do this and I guarantee you'll never get booked again!
12. The bass in my avatar is the one I have used for over 10yrs now- it is a great all round bass and def one I would recommend trying. (Lakland 55-94) Admittedly for the sound you are talking about it may not beat a Precision (jazz neck pickup sort of does it but not quite the same) but for flexibility it is a great bass. Worth a go?
13. I miss the like button- it was handy for those instances where you read a quick-moving thread of a few pages. It seems pointless to quote a post from 2 pages back and add "+1" or "this" The like button was great for that instant, knee jerk "hell yes" or LOL moment.
14. That'll be Donovan Hepburn on kit then- great player. Not watched it yet but judging by FB there are some cringeworthy moments.
15.
I must have listened to that a thousand times, and it takes my breath away each time I hear it. Absolutely stunning track.
+1. Everytime.
16. In my experience you're either not as good as you think you are, or way better. Very rarely can you rate yourself accurately and neither should you.
17. Legend. Such an influential player. Those Camilo albums are incredible- part of the fabric of my college days. Thanks for posting- loving this :-)
18. But did you sound a bit more like Bernard Edwards than before? Hope it works out for you tomorrow.
19.
Heh, suppose I am, not riled at all, Geddy is rather special but, to me anyway, quite different. Sorry to be brusque.
20.
erm... no.
I guess you're a fan so my intention isn't to rile but their sounds are similar, the way they attack their strings is similar and their note choices are similar.
21. Easy with the Minehead digs. It's my regular gig! Promised myself I'd pop in to see Bruce Foxton and see if NWR was with the Blockheads but new addition to the family has meant time off is valuable.
22. Lol. This was an audition piece I played back in '86- this and Big Money by Rush. Needless to say my repertoire was a bit limited but joking aside John Taylor taught me about ghost notes way before I knew who Jjaco was.
