1. I imagine an isolated track from Geddy Lee would sound very similar.
2. I love their stuff but this one left me a little cold. Song choice was poss the main culprit- I think they are at their best fleshing out and over-orchestrating relatively bland pop. The drop down for 2nd verse, the acrobatic vocals etc made it a little predictable. Thought the drummer's part was more stand-out than usual which was cool.
3. Into The Arena from Live At The Budokan. First bass solo I'd ever heard.
4. Nice teaser. I've seen him plenty of times but always with pretty much the same line-up. This sounds cool and fresh. Love to see him but I'm working. Mike, I see what you mean about the new stuff :-) Enjoy the gig.
5. +1 for iPad with Forscore. I use it with a clamp that goes on a mic stand and the air turn pedal. I wouldn't buy one for the sole purpose of using it as a PDF reader- a bit pricey for that :-)
6. A great shame indeed. I watched his videos regularly- an amazingly melodic soloist.
7. FWIW I would imagine Janek G or any of his contemporaries wouldn't want to compose anything that sounds remotely similar to, or as accesible as, some Weather Report albums- some of their best stuff is 35 yrs old now. I still haven't listened to his latest album but bear in mind it sounds like an experiment, a moment in time captured, which has subsequently been released with an option of getting it for free. I think he's a good guy- he takes criticism incredibly well from what I've seen, and has a very infectious enthusiasm and desire to improve which, for me, transcends his compositional skills and music etc. To paraphrase Jack Nicholson- he makes me want to be a better musician.
8.
Im sure I read somewhere that it was none other than James Jamerson himself on the original Starsky and hutch theme...
I think the original was a Tom Scott piece called Gotcha. Poss Neil Stubenhaus on bass? Edit. Wikipedia says Chuck Rainey.
9.
I was going to mention that one - but then i could not be arsed with the slap Police hunting me down on an Easter Sunday. The Bill line is good [7/4], written by the very fine Mr Andy Pask and great Drummer Charlie Morgan. Garry
I would have expected you to mention it too Garry! I hear your reasoning tho :-) One that I cannot find but you may remember is the theme from the Paradise Club ( I seem to remember it being Snake Davis-lead) All the late 80s stuff was great but 10-15yrs earlier some of the themes were sublime. Money.
10. This one springs to mind http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5ohUHIjAxI&feature=youtube_gdata_player The Bill was a good one for introducing odd time sigs to the general public- a memorable bass line albeit purely functional.
11. Pretty much every theme that springs to mind has been mentioned. Fame, Bergerac. The New Avengers will always lead me to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCFVEvZvo3g&feature=youtube_gdata_player And Bergerac always makes me think of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A47BpCwF8vI&feature=youtube_gdata_player
12. Agreed. They both provoke different reactions from me- each one is positive but in a different way. They are so different- I really enjoyed the video Janek shot after he interviewed Hadrien on his blog page. The 2 of them just playing for fun, trading, blowing, shedding- it had a lot of respect and humour too.
13. Gotta just chime in again- doing a bit of work with the headphones on and checking out Janek's last album. I really like it- "Next" is just chilled out to sh*t and builds so slowly. Great restraint and very musical.
14.
Er, you should hear the new Marcus album - it's killing and the best thing he's done in years - it'll be out soon
OT but I'm looking forward to hearing it- I understand where Doddy is coming from though with his point re Marcus. For me, Silver Rain and Free felt like they could have come from the same period as M2 which was a healthy progression from Tales. I still think Tales and M2 are his best with Tales edging it on a conceptual level. I'd love to hear some more bop-influenced funk along the lines of Jean Pierre - his jams with Dario Deidda on YouTube show him in a different light to the usual.
15.
This is Hadrian playing with fire...
sh*t the bed.
16. I have purchased it but not listened to it yet. I would have to disagree (with all due respect) with Chris on the lack of passion and feeling he feels Janek has. I honestly believe he feels what he plays from his bones- just watching him play and the joy it clearly gives him tells me that. I'm not an uber-fan and my style is light years from his but he has inspired me in the past. I do believe he is a bass-playing (and musical) heavyweight but some of these E-C 5 stringers are getting more specialised in their approaches.
17.
What is it you're embarrassed about?
Don't want to get into a huge argument here but I find these kind of threads are becoming a bit predictable. Everyone is entitled to their opinions etc etc. "Robocop taking a cheese grater to his genitalia Painful. Clanky. Mindless. Totally unnecessary." "that bass tone most certainly sucks donkey bollocks big time." Couldn't disagree more. I find that style of criticism non-constructive and juvenile.
18.
How can a solo be supportive? Confused of Ealing.
Who said solos were supportive? Not me.
19. Thanks for that Pete- in the minority here but I thought it was great. His feel AND sound are incredible in the solo sections. Incredibly supportive. Is that his new lineup? I found the drummer's take refreshing- Poogie is a monster no doubt but it's good to hear him with different musos. Some of the previous posts are a bit embarrassing if I'm honest- just imagine if Jaco was around today and a member on here. He wouldn't (and doesn't usually) stand a f***ing chance.
20. I always thought Nick Fyffe got a raw deal. Just reminded me what a cool line this is.
21. I don't know about string spacing but your font is killing my eyes :-)
