1. Yes, yes, yes. You said it- you're very much a beginner. It all falls into place in time. When I'd just started playing I can distinctly remember hearing a bass noodle fill in a rock tune- literally a root, flat 7, 5th kind of thing- and thinking "I'll NEVER be able to play that fast" That was about 30 years ago. Don't worry about what you CAN'T play- make the most of what you CAN play, play it well, play it like you mean it, and enjoy it. Don't look for short cuts- enjoy the journey :-)
2. Hey Garry wasn't there a West Side album released at around the same time? .... pauses to Google..... Cool, found it "Songs of West Side Story" Worth checking out- maybe not a purist's cup of tea but some great moments. Love the Grusin album. JP/DW swinging like the clappers.
3. He comes across as a REALLY good guy too. Some great stuff on YouTube.
4. My tip (esp for a jam where repeat choruses are likely) is to build the line. All your tips and ideas should have some kind of chronology- Roots and 5ths, half notes, quarter notes, using 3rds and 7ths, chromaticism etc. Eventually you can delay or avoid using root notes and implying new harmony but if you "shoot your bolt" too soon and the soloist is on the 3rd of their 5 choruses you'll have nowhere to go. Try to be guided by the soloist and the other band members too- respond to their playing and energy.
5. Looks like the studio in Newcastle was a bit chilly.
6. Life's far too short to play music with people who don't want to be there. That's not what it's about- we have fun, we entertain, we get paid to do both if we're lucky enough. Band 2 all the way.
7. Original studio recording of 'A Remark You Made' is so beautiful and moving for me. A non-bass related winner for me is 'I Can't Make You Love Me'- Bonnie Raitt or George Michael. A hard lyric to listen to if you've ever experienced unrequited love.
8. Had my answer all ready and saw that the last few posts were on the same train of thought. One of the first albums I learnt to was AC/DC's Back In Black. I swear that this helped me develop my timing and sense of groove in my formative years.
9.
f***ing hell, that's awesome! Who's the other bass player? Jazz basses rule!
Wow.
10. Not quite the same but nonetheless a classic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBpog_8g3LY
11. TBH and in your defence the cracking vol pot is a common, but minuscule, problem with these heads. +1 for a great amp.
12. Amazing lines- all his Go West lines have amazing nuggets of bass loveliness. I've seen Go West on a number of occasions over the last few years and all the bass players (great gig to have) have strayed very little from the original lines. Some great stuff around in the 80s- well played, incredibly produced. Go West, Scritti Politti etc. Great musos- Alan Murphy (RIP), Pino etc. Heard a great one the other day which sums him up- "If you've got 2 gigs, and Pino's got 2 gigs, Pino's got more gigs"
13. Midi disc. People that write "segway" on set lists. The expression "pitchy"- as in "your vocal was a bit pitchy"- used on TV shows like American Idol etc by people who can't tell flat from sharp. (As a rule of thumb, flat make you squeeze your bum cheeks together whereas sharp makes you want to claw your eyes out and stick knitting needles into your ears)
14. Just a quick mention about Paul Geary- saw Nik Kershaw the other day with Paul Geary on bass. Really, really nice player- played super-solid with only a few flashes of what he was keeping back chops-wise (naturally, "Won't Let The Sun Go Down" was one such moment.) Seriously wouldn't want to busk that gig- Kershaw is the modulation master. Never heard an Overwater bass live- very nice. Modern, clean and articulate- no wonder they're popular with TV and theatre players. Checked his website out and saw that he played on George Michael's cover of "As" (seems Paul gets all the crap gigs!!)- such a good bassline. Always wondered who played it. It seems Pauls Geary and Turner have it sewn up.
15. Count me as a fan. Re the vid- initially I thought it was interesting have left handers on guit and bass, then realised the video is flipped. Looks like a great bass player's gig too.
16. Aaah- early 90s how I've missed you! Great tune, great album, great cover. A nice 16s groove going on in your right hand.
17. Nice one Garry. Didn't think I would like this as I'm sometimes a bit wary of orchestral fusions (except for a bit of guilty pleasure-ridden Gino Vannelli) Only ever seen him play his fretless Fodera before- great brass blowing too. Highlight has to be at 4.36- string player leaning back and thinking "what the f**** is he playing? It's just a bunch of wrong notes"
18. I'd love to hear something similar. He peaked around Tales and M2 for me- not to say his later releases weren't as good, just that those 2 were so good. I'd like an album of standards or bebop. There is a clip of him on YT with the Italian Jaco-influenced guy- they play over Night in Tunisia and MM is stunning, he has chops but above all it's his musicality that shines. His sense of melody, rhythm and "question-and-and-answer" is outstanding. I say hats off to Bass Day for getting one of the biggest names in the business. If you think he's all about slappity slap you're missing the point. It's his signature dish but his menu is 'kin mahoosive.
19. My two-penneth re the studio version Guitar is playing a Bm as the F# is very audible- try playing an E in this chord and it sounds all kinds of wrong (its a passing note in the melody) The G# in the keys is pretty up in the mix and as the Bass isn't overly bassy a G#min7b5 is implied if you like In a nutshell its a Bm with a prominent G# in the keys line.
20.
That's not to say self-improvement isn't happening. It's just that, to most people, talking about gear is more fun.
+1 What WOT said I think the OP is referring to those who are constantly pissing around with gear- I know a guitarist like this but in fairness he also practises a lot. It's just the quest for THAT sound that is madness. What was it Marcus Miller said...?.. pauses to Google... oh well, something about people getting "too hung up on gear. Just find something that works and concentrate on your playing" (then he works on a signature bass!!!) I love my bass- it records great and sounds huge live (thus fulfilling the MM deal) but as I am the wrong side of 40 I can't help but think that I deserve a pop at the Fodera Emperor in the For Sale section- sort of a "Bucket List" bass :-)
21. I bought this bass with a mint pg, replaced it with a clear one and my hair fell out. You have been warned!
22. Nothing but good things to say about The Gallery- saved my arse on a few occasions and Alex has always bent over backwards to help me from right back in the Wapping Bass Centre days to the present day and I am a regular bass playing nobody. Everyone has bad days though. BTW I don't particularly like trying out basses there because he has better chops than me. Scrub that, he HAS chops whereas I am devoid of chops. He's gonna be a tad surly now and again because he lives and works in London which makes you miserable by default :-)
23. Lol. Just watched some of his other vids- amusing stuff. Very much in the style of Mirandasings. Some funny stuff in there if a bit subtle but that's the point. Def a gap in the YouTube marketplace for someone like him. Think we have our very own cult superhero.
