1. Had to watch. So tonight I'm thinking Gene Simmons, Steve Harris, Godzilla and cucumber. The involuntary belch at about 2.30 made me laugh out loud tho. I think he may have some comic value- a bass players mirandasings for those who have heard of her.
2. It was a great gig- prob one of the better Toto line-ups for a few years (ironic given the lack of original members)- Phillinganes and Sklar added some much needed character. The DVD suffers IMO for the less-than-subtle auto-tuning that peppers all lead vocals.
3.
The list is HUGE but for some of his recent work I like this video check it from about 4 mins onwards for just bass and drums really featured
Abe Laboriel Jr does it for me every time in this video. He must be such a great drummer to work with- he's just THERE. Small-ish kit, no mega-tricks, just taste and conviction oozing from every pore.
4. Probably! I guess the former helps the latter to some degree. I always thought I was a bit heavy handed- I blame poor monitoring and bloody Jaco with his burpy, barky tones influencing me in my formative years. Either way- I need to get me a ramp!!
5. Aaah Tony Grey- another bass player who makes me think that maybe I've got my RH technique all wrong!! Great stuff.
6. We're blokes. It's what we do. I bought a car seat for my baby daughter- I removed all the wrap and tore of the label which said "Do not remove this label incase of any defect. Item cannot be returned once label is removed" Yup, you guessed it- the chair was defective but I confessed to my bloke-ish stupidity and got a replacement one :-)
7. I ordered my last batch of Hi Beams from Thomann- €36 for a 5 string set. I progressed to DR strings from Rotosound to D'Addario to Elites to Manson's strings. When I first tried DRs the difference was tangible and audible- a bit like using better quality hi-fi leads and connects. Not a huge Eureka moment- more of an "oh yeah" and a smile. Since the £ weakened against the $ and € I change my strings less often TBH.
8.
There you go
Oops- not quite right.
9.
Pino Palladino said "as you get older your tone knob creeps down and your right hand goes further up the neck".
Brilliant.
10. How about taking 2 basses- one tuned to concert pitch and the other tuned to the lowest pitch C, F, Bb, Eb? Learn the songs that require tunings in Eb and D on the C- tuned bass. You'll still get the nice flappy low notes.
11. Just checked some credits for Naughty- Whitney Houston and Luther on BVs- not too shabby at all eh? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naughty_(Chaka_Khan_album) The budget for the album must have been huge- check out the names on the link (Wiki-ness allowing) The glory days of the session muso. I can remember being blown away by AJ's lines and some of those ridiculous, out-there fills and figures on Naughty and Whatcha but feeling (slightly) relieved to read that he was allowed the time to re-compose and re-record all of his lines (not sure which ones tho)
12. When, when, when oh when will "Chaka Khan" (1982) be released as an individual CD? It was my first real exposure to her albums in the late 80s, and the track Be Bop Medley just blew my head off. If my memory serves me right it's not up there with Naughty and Watcha but still a fantastic album that would evoke so many memories for me.
13. I'd love to see them at work in the studio as this sounds, to me, where all the fun is for them.
14. Yup, I'm already a big fan. It sounds good to my ears and fits in with my musical make-up (fan of slightly self-indulgent arrangements that groove)
15.
I like it, and think they seem to be having a load of fun. However...... There will be people on this forum who will want you removed from Basschat for posting that link, accuse you of having a tash, bad clothes, Demand you hand all your Basses over to the Police, and your family taken into care. You have to ask yourself is it worth the risk? or do you feel lucky? Garry
Lol. Yeah Garry. Think I got away quite lightly on this one considering I am guilty as accused I still think it's a good un
16. Thanks to all for advice- will check out brands and no doubt pick up some others on the way.
17. Great idea for a feature. Rio all the way for me- he was a big influence on me, and that line introduced me to right hand ghosting way before I knew who Jaco was.
18.
Who is the ancient codger on keys? What was most impressive was Jaco holding it down during that trombone solo (and the associated jabbing at keys from previously mentioned codger). I guess now someone will tell me the keyboard player is <famous name> at his final concert and I should have more respect....
Yup Keys player looks like Gil Evans (of "Gil Evans night" fame) and the other bass player lurking around is Mark Egan.
19. Oh God. Soul intro- Eggy.
20. Quite possibly one of the funkiest people on the face of the earth. Quirky, but so funky.
21. Can anyone recommend a hard case manufacturer for a 35" bass? (Lakland 55-94) I've been through so many gig bags I'm thinking it might be time for a change or at least to have the option.
22. Sorry to hear about the band split. Good luck with the photography and thanks for waiting for me that time on the M5 when I bought your JO5. So embarrassing!!
23.
And, though I may not be competent enough to discuss this thing, but let me ask you something - what's the point of doing the 15/8 thing if you're laying down plain 4/4 ideas over that?
I thought 15/8 sounded a bit arsey in the description. It's a bar of 4 and a bar of 7/8 which isn't the trickiest time sig for guys of this calibre to feel. I guess that's where Chris Coleman is having the most fun tho. Interesting responses and no outright flaming from anyone- for sure he isn't to everyones's taste. On watching it again it's his fluidity on some of those runs that blows me away.
24. Just seen this fairly recent solo. He's been a bit of a Marmite player for me over the years but this plain blew my socks off. Looks like his move to LA will pay off- great interaction between kit and bass and a truly frightening array of chops. The best I've seen in this style for a long time. Jaco on acid. 25. Followed them for a while on Facebook- it will be interesting hearing their original material. Their covers are frighteningly good if, like me, you like that kind of thing. Bass player is a great player from what I've seen. Obviously loads of post production going on but still good stuff.
