1.
Right! That may be the way forward! I am struggling to write the proper tab transcription out in Dm as I'm spinning plates at the PC anyway; i find this stuff so time consuming. I'll detune a whole tone and play along with the Em tab... that should do shouldn't it? I'm new to this sort of stuff.
Probably less time consuming to just detune your E string to a D and leave the other strings. This will mess around with your TAB though.
2.
Didn`t see the post, but my bet would be on C, Am, G, F.
IKWYM but I think its (if we're in C) C, G, Am, F in this one.
3. Interesting thread. My two penneth. I would love to have her sense of musicality- a fine groover and a real natural musician. If there was a reason for me to not buy her music its that I'm not a fan of her, IMHO, over-use of vibrato in her solos and I find her sound slightly stifled- almost over-smooth and compressed. Similar kind of player to Nathan East and Pino in that they do the job (bloody well) without overplaying but still with a good degree of musicality. Technique not at the forefront of their playing. But for this kind of music East and Pino are first-call Gods. Have to disagree with a previous post- she's not in the same league as Jeff Andrews, Tom Kennedy or Patitucci. They are completely different players- not a better league (they are IMO but just trying to avoid an argument), just a different league. Didn't Jeff Beck use Rhonda Smith on his last UK visit? Maybe he enjoys the dynamic that a mixed-sex band has. I sound like her f***ing headmaster but the bottomline is next to her I'm sh*t. I'd love her talent... and her gigs!!!!!
4. I find the most limiting factor is not being able to edit after you have recorded via the soft instruments- you need to be accurate at the point of recording which is quite difficult given the size of the keyboards etc. Not a problem if you can get by using the loops tho. I fooled myself that I would buy one to use as a worktool- Garageband, PDF readers for dots etc. Bottom line is, I spend more time on it browsing and playing games (I am not a game console user BTW)- it's a great piece of kit.
5.
Jeff Andrews is a great player-I love his playing with Vital Information,Michael Brecker and Mike Stern. Especially Stern's 'Upside Downside' and 'Time in Place'.
The late 80s was such a great time for 'fusion'- those 2 albums were/are so strong. I remember transcribing the lines from Gossip and Chromazone as part of my final College project.
6. http://www.notreble.com/buzz/2011/06/13/ja...adio-interview/ I hadn't come across this before the other day- fascinating hearing the guy in his prime.
7. If everyone in the band is pro-active in some way then keep it as an even split but if someone is doing all the legwork in chasing up every gig then there is a case for them getting a little more wedge. Problems begin if someone is sat on their arse, happy to wait for the gigs to come in and take the same cut as the fixers and chasers.
8. In a reading situation, open strings on a page turn are your best friend Fretted Es, As, Ds, Gs etc have a thicker, fuller sound but the open equivalents have different qualities that may be more desirable. One man's Hysteria is another (older) man's Footloose.
9.
Whichever you understand better! I have seen "pizz" and "fingerstyle" both written on bass guitar scores. Whatever works for you, especially if they are your own personal sheets.
Cheers both- they are for someone else hence the moment of doubt.
10. Hi, Just having a moment of self-doubt. When I write my own bass parts which move from slap to fingers I usually write "slap" and "pizz" to mark the changes. I'm just questioning my use of "pizz." What would the correct term be? Thanks
11.
Yep I saw Jeff in 80's with John McLaughlan and an unkown percussionist and they were excellent. Typical jazz stuff and although I was into Rock and progressive at the time I could still appreciate the musicianship. I guess not to everyone's taste but that's what makes bass playing interesting - to us anyways - LOL !!! Dave
Was that Trilok Gurtu? I saw them in Newcastle in the late 80s and groaned when I saw the perc set up (sensing a lack of drum-orientated groove) but it was amazing.
12. For pop fretless it has to be Pino- Oleta Adams- Get Here Paul Young- Everytime You Go Away The guy just pulls out amazing, melodic ad libs for fun.
13. Great player- great lines. Not sure I'd agree about a line from his website "..considered one of the top 5 bass players in the world"- but he's still a great player. Lovely ad libs on "Wake me Up.."- so damn singable!
14. Dennis Chambers on kit is no slouch either.
15.
Check out Vonda Shepherd.
I'm searching for someone who'll introduce themselves to me as Vonda Cox
16. Not exactly punk but I trained my ear learning earlier AC/DC numbers- Big Balls, TNT, a few of Highway to Hell and all of Back in Black. Simple lines- lots of Es and As and Ds but listen out for lines where the bass plays a 'pedal' note ie where the guit chords change from, say, an A to a D but the bass rumbles along on an A without changing. Doing this stuff taught me a lot about basic rock- Cliff Williams is one of those bass player's bass players
17. Years ago it was Google as on dial-up it loaded the quickest. For quite a few years now my homepage has been the BBC news page.
18. The MXR El Grande Bass Fuzz looks brilliant http://www.youtube.com/user/BassGuitarMag#...h/2/G6d9YzoCx3w
19. Generally it all depends on the song. In my head I hear what I want to sound like which affects how and where I play on the bass. Sometimes it's trying to emulate a big PHat synth bass sound, other times it's that AJ 80s sound on Chaka's Whatcha Gonna Do For Me album- sublime. When I was much younger I always used to play bridge pickup only on a jazz. Now, on the Lakland, it's both pickups up 95% of the time for a full sound- I need to make the stage and rig move!!
20. I think this was settled by the first post. The Chain will be identified as the F1 theme 99% of the time. Good Times is an amazing bassline and a well sampled/quoted line but play the first bar of it to the 'man in the street' and he'll say "Another One Bites.." almost everytime. Age is undoubtedly a factor tho.
21. Love the second track that's featured- some good old fusion. A little bit of Holdsworth maybe a bit of Weather Report- nice track tho.
22. Really like Ed Friedland- the YouTube reviews I've seen seem to be pretty unbiased and honest. Seems like a good guy too.
23.
Agreed, or if you play in a particularly loud band, you might consider going for a higher attenuation ER25's. I actually have two sets of filters for my plugs, one of each value depending on the gig. ACS are resellers for ER plugs as are many other outlets. The plugs themselves and the filters are made by a company called Etymotic Research (Hence the ER in the name) - You can check out their own website for more details. ACS will just arrange taking a mould of your ear and deal with sending them off, taking payment and arranging delivery of you finished product. I highly recommend these plugs - they are brilliant and worth every penny. When you first get them, they might 'sound' a little strange, but your brain will soon get used to them and you'll wonder why you didn't get them sooner!
+100 Had mine for about 4 years now so you should get good use from them- best £180 I've ever spent.
24. I seem to remember him being used a lot in the West End too- seemed to be in on a lot of the new productions that went in. I saw/heard him in JCS and Whistle Down the Wind in the late 90s.
25. He supported Marcus the first time I saw him- Barbican Centre 98ish? "There's Nothing Like This" and Lenny Kravitz's "It Ain't Over til Its Over" were 2 of my favourite 'radio' basslines back in the day- pretty sure they were out at a similar time.
