1.
Should I feel foolish when I say little bits of damage add to the character and history of the bass?
Nope as that's exactly what we say after the damage has been done
2.
Ahh yes, the "Everybody Solo" at the end of the song! I like to hold the root down with 16th notes (someone's should do it) which gives the "soloists" something to play over and then try to match the drummer on his last cliche slowdown roll, or snare build up, that usually leads to the final *crash*.
Yup +1
3. I remember him from my tape-sleeve-credit-reading days as playing on Jonathan Butler's albums.
4. I've only got as far as track 3- just doing the very short journey to work and back. Not blown away initially but found myself recognising hooks by the end of each number- the mark of an excellent songsmith. I'll persevere. Still worth more than the price of the paper IMO.
5. The Gold Experience, Diamonds and Pearls, Chaos and Disorder. Love, love, love them. Planet Earth wasn't great but not as bad as some people seem to say. Guitar was cool as was Chelsea Rogers although they were nothing new- good old funky Prince tracks.
6.
Feel, sense of time? Average technique??? I'm gobsmacked. You can't be serious. Tell me this is a joke! So who do you think achieves this?
+1 Yikes!
7.
You raise some good points, but let's focus on this one. Imagine I showed you a picture of three apparently identical bars of chocolate. * One is made from 'traditional ingredients' in the same factory where they've been making it for years. It's quite expensive. * The second is made in the country next door with some ingredients shipped in from the original factory. It's a bit cheaper than the domestically-produced chocolate. * The third is made in a faraway nation where there's a fair bit of labour exploitation and the sourcing of the ingredients is a bit opaque. It's ludicrously cheap. Knowing that, but without tasting them, how would one rank them in terms of 'value' and desirability? Commonsense would suggest the original would come out on top. Now let's assume one has tried them and they all taste pretty good in their own way. So you buy the one that best satisfies your budget and your personal tastes. Ultimately, it's matter of preference and financial resources.
Sod the basses, I'm hungry. let's eat chocolate.
8. I think I've been watching too much Wimbledon- if I watch the original clip I see Boris Becker and Andy Murray. I jest. I'd love an ounce of their ability.
9. Lovely- classic sounds from Zawinul. It's like they haven't changed in 25 yrs. He had a few decent bass players in his time- he always seemed to eyeball the bassist whoever it was. He clearly loved a 'communicator'. Maybe Jaco started his love affair with the instrument but it's always seemed to be a huge part of his line-ups.
10.
"It's more likely to break by me fiddling with it than if I just leave it alone"
Relate!
11. +1 for boiling. Its worth it for a few days of clear ringing strings- once strings start to thud they lose so much tone. Fine for some things but not for me. Twas fine in the days of the strong pound/weak Euro and Dollar- strings were cheap. Not so now.
12. I'll check out the Dare Strap. Didn't know what to Google- I figured someone on here would know of a product or 2. Thanks guys. Unfortunately sitting down isn't an option.
13. I use a comfort strap at the moment but wearing my bass has recently become a bit of a problem with me getting pains in the outside of my left shoulder associated with the pressure of the bass on my (pauses to search Wikipedia) trapezius :-) Are there any straps which spread the load over both shoulders like the Izzo golf bags? I'm getting treatment at the moment but also trying to ease the pain and the chance of things getting worse. Any ideas? I should add that this is as a result of wearing the bass regularly for many sets a night over the past 20 years or so.
14.
It seems that 'Jaco syndrome' is a major issue for modern jazz bassists, innit? Hadrien Feraud is probably a best example for this.. A few years ago he sounded like a complete copy of the legend.. I'm glad he now got away with some sort of 'unique' sound after all. But still, there are dozens, and there probably will be. Just look at this Berklee cat: Not to mention, that he's a complete 'victim' of Jaco, I can't get it, how can he get his thing going in Berklee.. Whatever.. It got me thinking.. I've heard it dozen of times - Oh, this cat, sounds like a complete Jaco/Wooten/Garrisson/whatever.. Basically, bassplayer is compared to another bassplayer.. But, have you ever heard - Oh, this man [bassist] sounds like M.Davis/Korea/K.Garrett/Coltrane, whatever..?
I see very little of Jaco apart from harmonics but this video is everything that is wrong with emulating the modern day giants of bass too soon. This guy may end up being a great player but he seems to have it ALL back to front- pinching artificial harmonics and slapping away but when he comes to actually playing the bass is a traditional manner, he struggles. Just my thoughts.
15. Best Bassist Toto ever had.
16. Nooooooooooooo- why did it stop at the good bit?? Good to hear MM playing with a different bunch of guys. Unusually slim neck pickup cover too. Thought Fred Durst was pretty cool on keys
17.
...hang on why the ref' to James Jamerson on this vid?
He's asking MJ to pass on his best- last I heard they were both dead and presumably funkin it up in a musical heaven somewhere. A great album and not a lot to do with the Bay City Rollers really. Enjoy it.
18. 15hz and nothing after that- just the click of the audio starting. 42 this year.
19. Loving this topic- truly educational. Stardust- The Music Sounds Better With You. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Os5ihedyH8 Huge dance track featuring sample from opening bars of Fate by Chaka Khan off her amazing What Cha Gonna Do For Me album http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wfIaT6KpKU
20. My favourite reply is the "if this had one more/less string I'd have it off you in a second..etc" Is that like saying to a first date "if you didn't have such a big nose I'd be paying for your meal"?
21. Sharay Reed all the way although Thaddeus Tribbett is pretty frightening on many instruments. I think this is Sharay's YouTube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/ChicagoBassed
22. 0.39- Keith Lemon on drums?
23.
killing in the name - RATM and im getting pretty sick of playing riders on the storm too, love the song, love that we cover the song but the keyboard bass part is repetitive
Wow, you play those 2 in the same set? I bet there are a few songs between 'em
24. A great pop song with a rarity in that the Middle 8 and link into it are possibly the strongest points of the song- certainly my fave parts.
25.
Got an email from the singer on Thursday to learn it in C for the gig on Saturday night
The original key is ridiculous for your average guy. Steve Perry has a hell of a voice.
