1.
Just watched that 'Meet the band' bit.. It's all cool, Alex, bass, the girl and stuff, but I particularly disliked drummer - from those few moments of him playing it felt that his touch was just too heavy for this kinda thing..
I have to disagree- he has been around far too long to not know what the job requires. MJ would have pulled him up for sure- he was quick to criticise the synth bassline in the opening number for not having the required funk. A fascinating film- not what I expected at all.

 3.
Ha ha, Frankie Gibbon. He taught me sound recording for one year at Newcastle College in '93. I remember we had a "day trip" to his home studio once. Last I saw him, he was miming backing vocals for Jimmy Nail on "Crocodile Shoes" on Top of the Pops. I remember him being hilariously funny when I knew him, but then again I was a naiive teenager at the time.
I remember Neil raving about Frankie Gibbon when he was at college- very cool that they are mentioned together now. Job done.
 4. A bit obvious in bassist circles but it gets me everytime- its more like Marcus than Marcus was back then! +1 for She's a Super Lady
 5.
+1 for MarloweDK all the way There's an Italian guy who I used to watch- plays an old Yammy bass. I first saw him do a Jamiroquai number. I'll have to search for him. He has a great feel.
Found him- very similar touch and feel to MarloweDK. Check out Space Cowboy and his "How I Learned to Play Bass" vids. Like Marlowe, every bass he plays sounds great. 6.
a fellow bc'er who's got great strength and versatility in his playing.. my sort of scales too..
Love this guy- just the right amount of flair. When I first saw him I was waiting for another Flea clone with the facials but nothing to back it up, and for him to not quite pull off what he was playing (YouTube cynicism at it's finest!) but he is so on the money for that style of music- a great player IMO.
 7. One of the perks of my gig is that some weekends I get to see some great names- Go West with full band down here this year at some point. Band are always kicking- great bass player, great guitarist and Pete Cox's vocals are as good today as they were 20 years ago- amazing. Loving Scritti Politti too.

 9.
Correct - Andy Taylor's now the only one still alive.
And John Taylor. So sad to realise that so many of them are dead- it really wasn't that long ago. All too young.
 10. I loved this song as a child before I picked up a bass. A great hook but I later knew why I really liked it. Beautiful, beautiful bassline. The groove master.
 11. I have played the same numbers in a show, to click, with different drummers and one guy felt slower than the other. My preference is for a drummer on it, with me trying to sit back a bit. Much easier to click otherwise things can get messy, or verrrryyy sloooowwww.
 12. The Rush one sounds like a Pro-Tools cock up. One that springs to mind is a rare Jamerson cock up on "Sweetest Feeling" by Jackie Wilson 1.19 Spooky. Same as the Rush number. Note to all- when recording, concentrate 1min 19 secs in. I always wonder about the bassline in Dancing Queen- last chorus over "See that girl, watch that scene diggin' the Dancing Queen" bit. Its always played with a C♯ passing note between the D and B- last chorus he plays a C♮and try as I might I have to play it whenever I do it otherwise the 'right' way sounds wrong!
 13.
There is an Eagles tribute band going around called the Illegal Eagles. Their bass player is pretty damned hot. Looks remarkably like Pino P, too.
When you mentioned him and his look I thought I knew who you were talking about- checked out Illegal Eagles' site. I used to see him play with a great blues rock band called Bad Reputation in the late 90's Always thought what a great player he was- very, very solid and quite Pino-esque too. Very worthy of a mention in this topic. +1 for Neil Harland. Good guy too.
 14.
any luck yorick??? ....or anyone? X
Can you get it from Dave's website or contact Dave via his site? He may oblige you never know.
 15. Should this be in the gear porn section?
 16.
Leo: "I'd file down the tuning pegs and lower the pick ups and the bridge as far as you can. Then I'd cover the neck with Vaseline" BCer "Why - will that make it sound better?" Leo; "No but it will make it easier to shove that Korean copy up your ass"
I like Huwberry's caption too but this made me snort in an involuntary manner at 3.20am.
 17. I will always admire players like Damien, Janek and Hadrien F- their knowledge on the instrument is amazing but what can spoil it for me a little is the over-used 3 or 4 finger technique in certain contexts. A few players use it and it doesn't do anything for me - it's like listening to a horn player triple tongue and smacks a little bit of style over substance to my ears. I'm in awe of all the musicians in the original clip.
 18.
Slap doesn't have to sound tinny, people just have to actually think about their tone instead of just plugging an expensive bass into an expensive amp rig, thinking "it must sound good". He obviously cares more about technique than tone and musicality (in this video, at least).
The ultimate slap sound for me- kind of Marcus before Marcus. And yes, I do love him too.
 19.
Thanks for posting the Julian Crampton stuff. When i was (much) younger I was massively into jazz-funk and loved Incognito, but I never knew who the bassist was. What a player! Cheers!
Could well have been Randy Hope-Taylor on the stuff you heard. Another killer player.
 20. I'm going to go for the pop angle- I've mentioned it before on here but Kylie's Spinning Around has always been a big favourite of mine. It completely captures the Bernard Edwards vibe and isn't an easy line to reproduce feel-wise. Other faves back in the day that inspired me to sit up and listen were Duran Duran's Rio and the original bassline from the Fame theme (got me hooked from the first note) All 3 of the above are ALL about the bassline for me.
 21. Came across this on the Tube. What a groove.
 22. The Lukather/Vinnie project mentioned earlier sounds interesting- would love to hear those 2 bounce some energy around on a good day. All musos mentioned are pretty sublime- ironically Beck is probably the main marmite player amongst them.
 23. Awful, truly awful for everyone involved and affected. The fine line between happy times and tragedy is a shocking reminder of how precious life is. So, so sad.
 24.
Phil Collins = Great drummer.
Unmistakably him. Are there 2 drummers? I seem to remember Mark.. *pauses to google surname*.. Brzezicki from Big Country doing stuff like this- their styles are similar with overfills and big kit sounds etc
 25.
This is the live version of Sanborn's 'Run For Cover'. Marcus's fingerstyle intro and the slap solo in the middle are an amazing example of how the perfect solo should build. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J85oQSX-d6s BTW, the sound is very low.
+ the 1. Was thinking of this one as a memorable solo from my youth. For me it has to be Havona everytime for jaw dropping everythings (light and shade, fluidity, composition etc), with the Willie Weeks solo being equally jaw dropping but in a totally different way. EDIT- that Miller intro and solo aren't as good as the ones that made it onto the Straight From The Heart live album. I guess it was the same series of sessions/gigs. RIP Hiram Bullock- class.
