1. Do us a favour and mark your post as 'sold' Your old Lakland DLX keeps catching my eye!
2. Can this be stickied in the Recording forum? Immediately bookmarked. Thanks!
3. I always understood that there were 2 kinds of endorsement in the most basic sense. If you were somebody that could offer exposure for the company by way of touring, album releases and associated press coverage you would be a viable endorsee with the only obligation being possible advertising of the brand and NEVER being seen using any other brand. The other kind was where the endorsee takes part in clinics and workshops all over a region or country in return for discounted gear. I know of a few musicians who have had the latter kind of endorsement.
4. You can make a living from doing one-offs, show tours etc. Some of these guys will say that they drive for a living- 8hrs in the car punctuated by a 45 min gig in the middle. Thankfully most of my money is made from a residency. It might not be everyone's cup of tea- the important thing for me is that I make a living from a talent that I have and enjoy, and I get to have a personal life too!! Nothing else would interest me. It's got to be music.
5.
Pray tell, what have you replaced 'em with and how has that improved the sound? Shaun
Lakland's own LH-3 system. Kind of a hybrid between the warm Barts and aggressive SD's they used to offer. Def a more MM vibe to it- a bit for bite and balance for me. And a change after 5 yrs!
6. I may well regret this but I'm selling my eden 4x10 cab. I love everything about it- it's quality and fullness of sound,it's volume, it's looks and it's prestige. Trouble is, it's not getting used. 700watts, 8 ohms. I'm after £500 ono. I'm based in Somerset and would prefer collection or a pre-arranged meet. Photos added later. 7. Amazing handwound 5 string Jazz Bass pickups (with covers) Have taken these out of my Lakland JO5 so they are in need of a bass to warm. Nothing wrong at all with them- I replaced them with some Nordstrand single coils as an experiment so these beauties are surplus to requirements. Would be a perfect upgrade to any Fender Jazz 5 string. Amazing vintage tones!! Check here for specs http://www.bestbassgear.com/lindy-fralin-pickups.htm http://www.fralinpickups.com/bass.asp#jazz http://www.fralinpickups.com/reviews_jb.asp £70 delivered
8. I have replaced the pickups and preamp from my Lakland 55-94 so the old p'ups and electronics are surplus to requirements. May suit a project build. The pre is vol(push/pull active)-blend-bass-treb-mid with frequency selection dip switches. Some string wear on p'ups £90 delivered Edited- no coil tap. Wanted to show pic. Pre amp just looks a mass of wires to me but it's all intact and should mean more to a better trained eye than I have.
9. How long do 'average' leads last- say, Planet Waves? Compare that to the leads that OBBM or others similar make- what is the life-expectancy of these leads when used regularly? Just because I could, (hey, I was young and reckless) I bought an MIT lead that was mentioned earlier in this thread. I must have paid around £80 for it and got about 7 years constant use from it. I now have a Monster cable which cost half of that and it is into year 4. I'm imagining that a good, solid handmade lead would last as long for a fraction of the price.
10.
Am I only bassist on the planet not to know the the Mario music????
I'm the same- probably because when I had too much time on my hands I was a Sega Mega Drive then a Sony PS man. No time now!!
11.
No. I wish there was a way to ignore crap like this. There is some cool stuff on YouTube like The Ox isolated bass and Jamerson but bedroom w***ers do nothing for me. Can he entertain people for an evening like ian at his Motown revue. I know what I think.
How is this crap?? If he's the guy I think he is then he's from your neck of the woods and held down a resident gig nearby for a couple of years- so he can play solo and ensemble bass whereas I can't. Getting tired of people being knocked when they "show off" Is this guy a bedroom w***er? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLmQRUq7l14...feature=related He's at home having a good old w**k on his bass but as he isn't playing 'Midnight Hour' do we presume he can't groove? The truth is he's one of our most talented young bassists. Joe isn't in his league but he executes some tricky stuff brilliantly. Ian was right- it's a good bass video.
12. I would have a 5 with a slightly different slant to your main bass- that way it won't be an idle back-up that never got used. I have a Lakland 55-94 (MM Humbucker and Jazz pickup) with maple neck and my back up is a Lakland JO5 jazz bass with rosewood neck. 2 different sounds so as a result the Jazz gets used instead of being a dust-gathering insurance policy. Having said that I lasted for 20 yrs without a back-up and only had 3 emergencies in that time. It's an excuse to buy another bass and not have to sell your pride and joy!! (I think you do play a 4 different after playing a 5 or 6 but that's not a bad thing. I would go for an active bass with passive option on my main and back-up.)
13.
Lakland don't help themselves with that strange accent thingy over the first 'a'. Are they saying you should pronounce this "Lakeland" like it's some sort of Norwegian word, or is it actually pronounced "Lackland" and they're pretentious as hell?
It's Lake. Most people think my bass is a Musicman but the sound is always complimented. Thankyou FOH man.
14. Hope he recovers fully. Howard built my first 5 string in 1990 when he was building from home- such a nice guy who obviously loved what he was doing. He built me a fretless in about 1991 which is still in circulation. Heavy bass!! http://www.thebassgallery.com/chardfl5.html Get well Howard!
15. No names, but if they had to be a gender it would be male. There ain't nothing feminine about any bass I would want to play. It's a voice thing too- deep voice..
16.
If you ever think of parting with the Eden let me know, I'm after an Eden 4 x 10
Will do.
17. Something like this was tried on the Lakland Owner's thread on Talkbass but nobody could agree on what spec of jazz style bass to get.
18.
Hi all I don't know if many of you were aware of this funky little shop, but, after many years... it has closed. Aww. He always had a decent selection of wierd and not-so-wierd bargains lying about. Now Newcastle is entirely at the mercy of GuitarGuitarSoundControlSoundsLiveGenericMusicShopChain. Dammit.
Is that Howard Satterley or a different Howard?
19.
yeah, it's always sounded "wrong" to me. I read a story that John Bonham couldn't figure out the odd time signature, so just played 4/4 through it?
Bonham plays it fine as it is in 4/4 and he does that stuff v good! To my ears it sounds like the guitar boys make a bit of an arse of it- it's a repetitive figure with the accents being displaced each time. It's when they play the pick up into the original riff from that section that it gets a little shaky. Something like this
20.
Blimey that's a lot of gigs. If you want to see really bad technique though, just pop along to the Phoenix next week! (assuming you are in Chard that is)
Not actually in Chard- got married there in Nov tho! Chard is a shortened form of my name- Richard. Have a good gig- technique 'n' all!!
21. Just wondering whether anyone learnt any valuable bass-related lessons during the past 12 months. Have you changed the height you wear your bass for wrist-injury reasons, or fitted a ramp? Changed your brand of strings or started listening to a bass player who has opened up a creative path for you? Mine were learnt from these very web-pages. 2007 has been all about- 1. Ear protection. A seemingly hefty investment of £170 (ish) but now the proud owner and regular wearer of a pair of ER-15s. Small price to pay to avoid further hearing loss. If you are in a band who play (practice OR gig) regularly, its simple. Do it. Even if you think you can't afford it. Can you afford to lose your hearing? Lightweight cabs!! Small price to pay for further back damage!!
22. Was just looking at my fingertips last night and thinking "Couldn't do with a bit of a break now" Thankfully, I have 3 weeks off now, 2 of which will be spent on honeymoon on a piece of sand Thanks to my place of work (big holiday/entertainment resort in Somerset, begins with B, and isn't Pontins ) I played about 280 nights, 2 sets average. Stamina is good, reading is good, wrists and technique not so good
23.
I am sure the pinned thread on impedence has the formula for calculation but I can't be bothered to look.
Didn't see the pinned thread but thanks for the nudge in it's direction. Looks like if I stick the Eden on the bottom it may become a glorified speaker stand, but at least I get a bit more juice out of the head.
