1. Well mark it now cos it's just shot right up again!!
2. +1 for Marcus
3. I remember transcribing Liquid Gold's 'Dance Yourself Dizzy'- I read it later for a recording and had a pig of a time. It's an octave-fest and a half. Not sure who played on it though.
4. Unopened and surplus to requirements- a black pickguard for a Lakland DJ5. I had ordered a White DJ5 and fancied a black 'plate with it so ordered one from the US but the bass took too long to arrive and I purchased elsewhere so it's not needed. £17 delivered.
5.
So, a female playing a bass has a novelty value?
No more the fact that she is young, looks younger and is already mixing it up with the heavyweights of the music world. Sort of a bass version of Joss Stone.
6. I think she's pretty cool- if I was put on tour with Herbie and Chick (1st name terms) I would spend most of the gig standing in a puddle of pee. Is that Vinnie C on drums in the video? Oops, more pee. She is talented without question. Moreso for her age and no difference for her sex- lets see how she develops as a player over the next decade. I hope she gets used on her merits and not her novelty value. Go Tal..
7. Nice bass- good luck with the sale. I feel a Thin Lizzy moment coming on.
8.
PM Sent
Mike- I have sent a PM.
9.
On the necks of the DJ5 and JO5, it's been a while since I played a JO5, but I'm pretty sure the DJ5 isn't as chunky. Certainly the JO5 has a more pronounced C to the profile, which is perhaps where I'm getting the chunkiness from. I think I know what you mean about the extra tension of the longer scale, but surely a good set-up and/or a slightly lighter gauge of string will brink the funk back! I don't feel what you describe in my DJ5 though, digging in gets me exactly what I want from it. The DJ5 which Nik bought from me I did feel was a little less responsive to digging in, but I always put that down to a rosewood board versus maple. Tonally though I have to disagree on the "get a 4" suggestion.
What I mean is on a 4 string- when you play over the back pick up there is still an amount of give in the string which is less apparent on the 35" scale bass which offers a bit more resistance. Likewise if you fancy a bit of double thumbing it's slightly trickier on a 35" for the same reason. A tauter B equals tauter E,A,D, and G strings too. I'm not knocking them- both my basses are 35" Laklands. I do fancy a maple necked jazz 5 tho- liking the sound of the brightness.
10. If you really like that Jazz sound and feel I would get a 4 string. The Fender 5s apparently have a slightly flabby B string although it may not bother you. The drawback with a Lakland 5 is also it's plus point- the 35" scale makes for a good B string but you loose out on that funkiness on the other strings IMO- bear with me. I have Homer's/ OBBM's old Skyline JO5- I think it's a great bass but there is extra tension in all the strings. When you dig in on a 34" neck you get a great funky feeling through your fingers which is slightly diminished on a 35" neck as there is more resistance there. Try before you buy. If you want a 35" 5 string I can recommend a well priced second hand Skyline if you can find one. DJ has a chunkier neck than a JO5 too! As has been said- it's well chronicled that the Lakland Skyline basses are some of the best value basses you can get.
11. I sold a bolt-on 5 string Ken Smith BS something-or-other which I bought new from the Bass Centre in Wapping. (Never knew exactly what it was as I got the wrong documentation with it) It was under my bed for a year-ish after I bought my Lakland several years later so I let it go for about a grand. It's since turned up in the Gallery for well over that. Too expensive to keep for that odd Ken-Smith-sound moment but nice to have owned one all the same. Not enough of an all-rounder for my work but would like it back all the same (just to have- but the grand came in handy!)
12. To answer the original post M-Audio or Focusrite products are all compatible with Logic- anything that is Mac compatible will be fine. The M-Audio Firewire 410 would suit you and is less than £200 now. I use Logic Pro but it all depends what you want it for- I do backing tracks and clicks etc so I need more sounds and plug-ins than I had with Logic Express. I got it for a snip off eBay but be careful with who you trust. The new iMacs do look a bit good don't they!
13.
How do the Nordies sound different to the LF's? I've just taken my J-retro out as I seemed to be bypassing it so much of the time. I think I prefer the passive tone.
I know what you're saying about the J-Retro- if I was recording I would bypass it for that classic jazz sound, but my live sound seems to benefit from it engaged. For me it's the same with the p'ups. Recorded, I actually prefer the LF's but live the Nords are a bit tighter whilst not sounding modern. To my ears the difference is mostly in the bridge pickup- a bit more honk and poke in the Nords which when blended with the neck gives a more defined note (which IMO works better on the 5 string- I felt the B was a bit flabby live, especially compared to my 55-94 which has an exceptionally well-defined The difference is described well here- http://blueberryhillbass.blogspot.com/2006...ordstrands.html
14. A bump for these top aftermarket Jazz bass pickups. Sweet sounding with a beautiful 60's vintage tone.
15. Why not buy Russ's Audere pre (which is for sale further down) AND these? You could have both for a few quid more than a J-retro. Haggling is a good point too (haggle with Russ first)
16.
Hey, can some one tell me, would these be loud enough for a 3 piece band playing in pubs and small halls? we have a 1200w powered mixer to power them Tim
What are you thinking of putting through them? Just vocals?
17. +1 for the Millerheads. Not sure I like the Alain Caron track- it's a great technique but it reminded me of a programmed line- which is a veiled compliment as it was executed perfectly. Flawless timing but no real soul to it- although in fairness the music is more fusiony and less of an R+B thing which allows your Miller style players to get more of a funk thing going on (Only my in my opinion) The guy is still a monster player and I beg for an ounce of his talent and discipline.
18.
Why would you possibly want to sell these?
Don't sow seeds of doubt in my mind!! I've replaced them with Nordstrand singles- I was curious and I liked what I heard.
19. Amazing handwound 5 string Jazz Bass pickups (with covers) Have taken these out of my Lakland JO5 so they are in need of a bass to warm. Check here for specs http://www.bestbassgear.com/lindy-fralin-pickups.htm http://www.fralinpickups.com/bass.asp#jazz http://www.fralinpickups.com/reviews_jb.asp £90 delivered
20. Barely used- bought a few years back but used so infrequently. It's been sitting around for a while so time to go. Np PSU but battery included! With original box £160 inc P+P http://www.sadowsky.com/audio/preamp.html http://www.thebassgallery.com/sadowypre.html
21.
That £160 includes the price of the filters, which from what I recall of the spare filter prices is about half of the total cost. Shooting ear protection is much simpler, aiming to block as much sound as possible instead of evenly filtering it by a fixed amount. One boutique effects pedal or good hearing for the rest of your life? Alex
Beat me to it by a minute!
22.
The custom moulded plugs... anyone know who/where they are done at a cost of less than £160? I know my hearing is worth that but I'm sure I've seen moulds being made at Game Fair trade stands (shooting type game fair NOT Warhammer, D&D etc) for £60-£70!
The £160 includes the filter as well- the moulds on their own come in at around £80 with the filters costing about the same again. I had some ER-15s done a month or 2 ago. I think these things are a bit like pensions or looking after your teeth when your young. You don't really see the point until it's usually too late. The best £180 I've spent in a long time (I paid a bit more to get a quicker turn around time, and a tenner for the cord so I could look like Larry Grayson between sets)
23.
Lydia, in a geeky kind of way.
Dontcha just love that kind of talent? Only 2 pages in and we can establish that the bass is THE cool instrument.
