I have an ODB-3 and I don't want it. It sucks- literally. As in sucks all tone out of your bass. Also be aware that a lot of the great overdriven sounds you hear are mixed with a clean signal too.

Good to hear it Alan A disco, at the end of the day, is a very loud radio playing songs which people can hear all day, every day if they wish. Punters love a live band- most wish they could do it (whereas many could probably do a dodgy DJ's job) I've never heard a good wedding DJ- it's usually a right cheese-fest (although I'm sure there are some good ones- just to be on the safe side!)

Loved the transition from 2 fingers to 4 on the 16s pedal at the end- v smooth.
Wish he did What Is Hip fingerstyle though! Would have sounded much better in my opinion! Does he HAVE to slap everything?!
He can play incredible finger style as we all know but I think he's got to the stage where it is HIS signature sound. It's almost like saying "did Jaco always have to play fretless?"- not exactly like it, but almost. (Just sticking up for my man)
Hey all - the ICMP (Bass Instiute) is going to have one Mr Anthony Jackson in for a masterclass on Fri 13th July. He'll be doing a joint masterclass with Jazz-Rock guitar virtuoso Mike Stern, Places are obviously extremely limited, but I have 2 spaces to give away. Simply email me to with the answer to this question: Which absolutely awesome monster bassist recently signed on as part of the Institute's visiting faculty? (for those of you who don't know, the answer might just be on the icmp website somewhere..) Winners will be drawn (on Monday of next week) at random from the replies I get.. Dave
Hell's teeth! What a great scoop. Masterclass defined.

Get better soon. On the plus side, you're off coffee-mug-collecting duties for the forseeable future. Unless this was an over-elaborate ploy??
With the zeal of a second-time-around learning-it-all-again bass player I'm getting a bit frustrated with the lack of musicality/ groove/ rhythm of my playing. I practice scales, the stuff my tutor sets for me and the odd tune I like from Guitar Pro and have a go at it, and I always try to be mindful of what I'm playing. To use a language analogy, I feel like I'm learning the words OK but completely lacking the cadence and rhythm of the language and it's all Mi - nombre - es - Mark. Vivo - en - Worcester. Is there any method or key tunes to learn to help me? Is it just a case of getting as many quality hours into my fingers? Yours, Frustrated of Tunbridge Wells.
The best advice I can give is to listen to music and basslines that have the traits that you describe (Luke's tip was a good one)- really let yourself absorb these sounds and over time you will find that with the practicing and playing you will invariably do along the way, your feel and fluency will improve. It takes time and there is no short cut but you cannot underestimate the importance of your ears in this kind of development. Once you get the sounds and feelings into your soul via your ears, it's all gonna come out one way or the other!! Your tutor will drip feed you too, so you will get to apply the theory you are being taught soon. Basic technique is first but scales are the important building blocks- get your head around them and their component parts (3rds, 5ths, 6ths, 7ths etc) and things will start to fall into place. Don't be frustrated.

These are a great all in one box solution and have come down in price recently- £270 for a pair. Great reviews etc- have used them for a few years. Great for monitoring/mixing and iTunes-ing. Back to when you were in your early teens
chardbass replied to Brandonh's topic in General Discussion
Piano and electric guitar. There would have been no time to do it- girls, music, endless summer holidays... :-) There have been many times when I wished I had applied myself to both instruments- harmonic knowledge is a great help to us bass players. I can plink on both now but wish I could do more. On the bass itself I wish I had studied improvisation more- blues first then some jazz. Again, I have never made the time. I've had too many years of playing just basslines! Zzzzzzzzzz. -
Adulthood heroes 1 Jaco 2 Marcus Miller 3 Laurence Cottle 4 Anthony Jackson 5 James Jamerson Childhood heroes 1 Gene Simmons (fished in with the make up- made me want to play the bass) 2 Geddy Lee 3 Cliff Williams 4 Steve Harris 5 John Taylor (never forget the first time I heard Rio) Interesting if you look at the basses of your faves too. A lot of Fenders in mine. 1 Jaco (Fender) 2 Marcus Miller (Fender) 3 Laurence Cottle (Wal, Goodfellow) 4 Anthony Jackson (Fender, Fodera) 5 James Jamerson (Fender) 1 Gene Simmons (Gibson and others) 2 Geddy Lee (Rick, Fender, Steinberger, Wal) 3 Cliff Williams (Fender, Musicman) 4 Steve Harris (Fender) 5 John Taylor (Aria)
Ah no, You have to play slow to get the groove .. :0
A cool tip that's worth trying is to count slow ballads in double time (or feel the 8th note pulse) and up tempo tunes in half time (or feel the half note pulse)- it can stop you slowing or speeding up respectively.
Yeah, I have been noticing how now a days bassist play a lot of slap. I dont really like slap(I dont like playing it.) Are there any people dominating the scene with there fingers. My favorite thing about a player is when they can groove. Are there any players that play with there fingers and can groove? Im having a hard time explaining this. I know people play with there fingers but I mean, Is there a bassist that fingers like Victor slaps?
Don't worry about it. You should have been around in the 80's- then you would have worried!! Everything finds it's level eventually.
Not on all eyes, my eyes hate bright blue light, can't focus it correctly. Small, round LEDs look like fuzzy blue flowers. All other colours are fine.
It was a generalisation- easy on my eyes. If someone has a problem perceiving blue I'm guessing you wouldn't consider blue when deciding what colour LEDs to get.
Hey man - the gig was fun but thrashing away on acoustic bass for most of the day has worn me out! We did get to borrow one band's PA and I got to use a vintage J Bass for one set and that went down really well - but this wasn't one of my proudest bass days! Patitucci is over in June at the opening gig at the newly done up Royal Festival Hall - I think it's around the 15th - but he'll in classical jazz mode with Mark Anthony Turnage - but definitely worth checking out too. Just saw Tony Grey with Hirmomi last week - utterly awesome - got to hang a bit with him as well after I interviewed him - such a nice guy and his playing is really getting pretty damn amazing, the band were incredible - sorrry I've said all this crap before but I am still buzzing about that gig... M
I used to get Tony Grey confused with Janek Gwizdala in my early MySpace browsing days- 2 Fodera wielding, beanie hat wearing Brits doing good in the US and all that. Loving Janek's playing. Tony ain't no slouch it seems either.

Blue LED's are fine- I have them. They are very easy on the eye too. If there is too much white light then presumably you wouldn't need the side LEDs to help you anyway. LEDs are a safety net- when my batteries die I wait a while before replacing them so I don't get completely reliant on them.
just the smell of vomit stale beer and sweat pervades the air instead.
A friend of mine went to a smoke-free club in Cardiff and said that now the place smelt of farts and BO. Nice. So not only will passive smoking decrease but maybe STDs too.

I for one feel that on my Lakland with it's 35" scale, what you gain in a taut, non-flapping B string you lose somewhat in (IMO) over-taut D+G strings. I guess this system solves that problem.
Check out Bobby Vega....... what a groove, and he's only "messing about"!!!
Whoooaa!! What a great player- never checked him out before. Great groove with or without the pick.

I just bought Homer's Lakland Joe Osborn with J-Retro deluxe. Very pleased with the feel of it- it's not a Sadowsky killer but I prefer it to the Fenders I've tried. The 35" scale makes it a different instrument altogether- a lot more taut. If you could pick up a decent 2nd hand 4 string JO you would come out with a lot of change from 1K. A superior bass to the KSDs IMO.
