Hi, I'm suffering at the moment with 3-point-bridge syndrome. I have a 2007 Gibson Thunderbird, I bust a string during a gig and lost a saddle and screw. Gibson referred me to Allparts in the UK but to no avail; Sound Effects Music claimed to have used saddles but what they've sent is too big. I bought the basss new from Coda in Stevenage UK and they've now ordered a replacement. We'll see. I also had issues when using Rotosound strings with silked ends muting the sound. I moved to Ernie Ball Hybrids but the overwarp would make the string buzz on occassion. My solution was to use ball-ends to bring the overwrap back so that it didn't rest on the saddle. I'll try to attach a photo... I emailed both Gibson and Rotosound. Gibson's response was: Thank you for your interest in Gibson guitars. We have not systematically tested Roto Sounds on our basses and have not heard of the problem you describe in particular. However it sounds like one of those things that every guitar or bass player will encounter along the way once in a while when trying different gear. Your way of fixing it seems adequate and the most simple and best solution in this case! Rotosound responded too: No not had this problem before and I will explain why. The length of the twist forming the eye is a standard length. It is referred to as a European ¾. Our core machines that make such are designed that way and have produced such for decades. The North American eye is slightly shorter around 5/8” but weaker. Your problem with this Gibson model is that the distance between the saddle and anchor point is really too short to take standard strings it seems. Way back originally in the late fifties/early sixties scale lengths and eye dimensions were designed around the Fender Precision and have not caused us any undue problems over the years. It is a shame sometimes that instrument manufacturers do not consider the string fitment as if an afterthought which can give the owner a lot of grief later down the line. Some slight mods, as you have done seems the only remedy but you have to watch the vibration. You should try the string on another bass though to ascertain whether it is the set up of the string itself. I'm now very tempted to try the Hipshot replacement.
Buy the Hipshot Supertone and be done with Gibsons nonsense design
I had in mind a spray can of matt black for the Epiphone logo.
That's the problem though. Spending a wad to botch it up. If Fender did one (or an indie) I'd snap it up.
I had in mind a spray can of matt black for the Epiphone logo. ... and what is 'bobbins soft case'?
Bobbins = a bit crap
I knew that really. Have you got a case? Soft or hard? Apparently Jack Casady case fits but £99
I've just got the bobbins soft case it came with from Wunjo. There's a pic on TB of a chap with his Coronado in a Jack Casady, but the ones I've seen online have an Epi logo, and that don't seem right in my head!
I had a little go on one unplugged in GAK this afternoon. Very nice, but, of course, it had roundwound strings which was bit of a passion killer for me. Still .... we'll see.
Once you get the crap rounds off, it's a completly different beast

You could actually get in 'Have you seen my testicles, and my bum? You sexy thing' I'm going to try this out later with actions and everything.

help - amp tech needed in oxon/northants/bucks area
Billy Apple replied to mrtcat's topic in General Discussion
I reckon you've more chance asking if a member here can lend you an amp for your gig, and just getting the thing fixed under warranty. Plus if you let someone on it, it might void the warranty you have. Post up a thread titled 'Head Needed On Saturday Night. Oxon, Northants, Bucks' and watch the offers roll in, while yours is at the menders. -
Are Mexican basses really underrated ?

I had a MIM Fender Mike Dirnt sig P bass. The neck was lovely. The body was lovely. Beautiful finish. All the hardware was great, and the pup superb. All put together by someone with a glass eye and a brass hand. The screws on the control plate screwed in to air, and the scratch plate had been butchered (badly) to make it fit. The bridge had air between it and wood. As I said the neck and body were great, alas the union between the two not so. Once it was pulled apart and re built by someone who knew what they were doing it rocked! But a tad on the heavy side. Now my Chinese Modern Player Coronado, now there's a nice bass -
When you bridge it and turn it on do you do the 'Star Wars fully operational Death Star' bit? I know I would

Being a life long pick player I swear by Jim Dunlop Tortex .73 Just the right balance of firm for digging in, flexi for speed and rubbery grip-ness. Love them and always a couple in my back pocket

Just picked up an Ampeg SVT Pro II. It needs a bit of TLC and is canny road-worn. Got it to Greg at http://www.guitaraid.co.uk/ on the recommendation of Discreet as they have just weaved their spell on his Burmans. So they're giving it a service and a bit of love. Greg is pretty decent down in Putney. I got the amp last night in deepest South London and Greg took it in last night at 10pm to save me having to go home and then make another trip back into Londinium. Any-hoo, it came in a flight case that I might bin and use it nekkid. There were once 4 feet fitted to the base. Anyone know where I might get replacements, and the size of the bolts? Plus if I decided to have another flight case made, any recommendations? Someone really good? Cheers!

Exactly how do you bridge all the channels. Pic please?

Speccing a new rig, so up for sale is my Maxon Phase Tone PT999. Really lovely one knob 70's retro-sound phase pedal. It's mint condition, in box with instructions. Also has unused rubber base sticky-mat, there is velcro on the pedal Dead easy to use and sounds proper gorgeous with bass. Here's some cut n' paste info.. With its single knob, the PT999 Phase Tone looks deceptively simple. Yet packed into this tiny blue box is a host of the most authentic 70’s-era phasing effects available in a current production unit. The secret behind the PT999’s timeless tone lies in the fact that its circuit is exactly the same as it was when first introduced in 1974. While many “reissue” effects are far from true to the original designs, Maxon has taken great pains to keep the Phase Tone unchanged for close to 40 years. By adjusting the lone Rate control, a wide variety of expressive phasing nuances can be coaxed from the PT999 - all of them whisper quiet and amazingly transparent. Its minimalist circuit doesn’t get in the way of your guitar tone – it simply accentuates it, working equally well to spice up clean or distorted sounds. If you demand classic phase shifting effects without compromising your guitar’s signature tone, the PT999 Phase Tone has no equals. The PT999’s four-stage phasing circuit offers 720 degrees of phasing sweep variable from .2 to 14 Hz (cycles per second). The PT999’s FET’s (Toshiba #2SK246) are carefully sorted and matched by hand to produce the smoothest phasing sweep possible with low noise. Unlike some phasers, the PT999 runs negative feedback of the signal to each phase-shifting FET for less signal distortion. The four-pole shift of the PT999 creates a chewy, organic phase with a subtle drive to the signal. The 4 phasing Op Amps work together to emphasize this phase point, as each successive one accentuates the notch of the previous, creating a very resonant effect. The subtle drive and resonance really bring out pick attack and add a degree of real, dirty dimensionality. Internal trimmers adjust center frequency and width of the phasing sweep (factory calibrated, we recommend adjustment of these trimmers be left to a qualified technician). The PT999 features buffered, JFET bypass switching with a low impedance output, allowing it to drive long cable lengths or other effect units without loss of signal. Any how, It's £80 posted within the UK. No trades thanks!
