Figured a plan for hardening up the back part, been sanding around it. I have some Wilko own brand ‘danish oil’ but it is actually a wipe on varnish, leaving a satin plasticy coating. I used it for a door then got some proper stuff. Anyway, the sticky plasticyness seemed idea for purpose if I can get it to penetrate, mixed it 50/50 with white spirit an brushed it on, leaving it to pool in the crevices, and soak in. Will top up in a bit.
Are you wanting the roughness to be coated, or are you looking it to be totally level with the surface? What about filling the crevaces with a clear epoxy resin?
It all adds to the tone.
The tone is great, but the design is a bit tacky
"It's difficult to put wood back once it's gone". Never heard of glue Billy?
Yes. I have one body almost built entirely from the stuff

Depends on the kind of neck. Bolt-on, thru etc, laminated or single piece. Without sounding obvious, the more you remove, the greater chance of bow, but the truss rod should be able to compensate. IMO a laminate neck should be more stable due to the opposing laminates, but some maple one pieces are pretty sturdy. A spoke-shave may give a cleaner removal than surform (I think this is what you mean by rasp). Go slowly, and keep measuring with a calliper of you have one. It's difficult to put wood back once it's gone, how about a different bass? Good luck

Newcastle - Where to see good live music?
I didn't realise the Jazz club did food! I've walked past it so many times but never think of going there. It tends to be trad jazz though, your chances of seeing a great fusion band I would suspect are pretty slim!
Your entrance fee includes some grub, stipulation of the licence. I used to go quite a lot years back cos the girl I was with at the time worked there. I've not got much of a knowledge of jazz, but there seemed to be a wide variety of sounds, and blues was represented. He used to get some big names in from that scene, and often sold out. Had a great NYE there once, my lass was serving at the bar, every time I got the beers in, I got more in change than the cash I gave her... Happy Days! -
Newcastle - Where to see good live music?
Billy Apple replied to mrtcat's topic in General Discussion
Not sure if it's still open, might have closed down years ago, but check out the Jazz Cafe on Pink Lane. Its uip a cut that is opposite the Central Station, running to the bottom of Westgate Hill. The entry fee includes grub, and there is always live Jazz. It's a really great dive, very old, and full of atmosphere. It's run by a guy called Keith who once booked The Rolling Stones to play at the Club A Go Go (in the now defunct Handyside Arcade). -
The boots say punk, but the custom boutique rig and coffee table bass don't agree.
If styling 'like it had been dragged, or possibly crawled, out of a swamp' aint Punk, I don't know what is. But, if you dare put your can of White Lightning on my coffee table, I'll gob in your eye.
I find artistic guidance in artistic terms is well accepted. For mine I asked for styling 'like it had been dragged, or possibly crawled, out of a swamp'. So he can dig the feel you are aiming for, maan.
We had quite a detailed conversation about wood, and what I've decided on was not what I'd originally had in mind, but he suggested persimmon, and I really liked the look.
quite like wishbasses, have you been able to try one? looking forward to the pics
I've not been able to try one, so I'm flying blind. I've been after a fretless, and I like the individual philosophy of a wish bass. I was following Mr Foxen's threads, and thought why not? This post on You Tube tipped the balance for me- http://youtu.be/Ffd71HG4XW8

A Lobe, for those who don't know...
-
Just put a deposit down for the following Lobe Wishbass- Persimmon neck and finger board. as mixed in colour as possible Bloodwood body, as grained as you can get Kent Armstrong Humbucker at the P position Volume control and jack input down away from away from Bridge Control cover plate on the back of instrument Fret-less, no side dots Black Hardware White, unfinished 4 string 34" scale 7/16" string spacing at the nut 3/4" string spacing at the bridge Bloodwood is red (obviously!) a little like Padauk, but with a more interesting grain apparently. Persimmon is black and cream, very dense, part of the ebony family. The string spacing is standard P. I'm going to do all of the finishing myself, with help from my luthier, who will work on the rest. Depending on the sound when she comes will determine any electrics changes. Hopefully be posting pics of her out the box soon enough. I know all about the potential pitfalls I may encounter with a Wishbass, but the input I will have to put in is precisely the reason I'm buying it. If Wishbasses are not your thing, and you are thinking about posting negative comments that it will fall apart/ be unplayable/ etc etc, please don't bother, I've already heard it. If you wish to slag-off Wishbasses, or the people who buy them, then please start your own separate thread. This is a thread for a Wishbass refin, and I wish to keep it as such. Anyone with constructive, positive help or advice regarding the refinishing and rebuilding of bass guitars is most welcome.

P Bass Refin, Body off eBay, neck from Mike Dirnt
Billy Apple replied to Billy Apple's topic in Build Diaries
There was a deep ding in the lower recess. I'd sanded most of it out, but the last coat of dye was very wet. This has blown the ding proud of the body, now it is dry, I will be able to sand it flat. Wish I'd soaked the knock to start with, might have brought the whole thing out, and save me a heap of sanding. You live and learn. -
Not having a go at you or anyone with this post but it's a good point for me to point out that i never dissed Gibson or the Thunderbird, in fact i complimented the sound! I just stated my experience but i did not say that the basses were bad, that i disliked them or that Gibson made bad instruments, though i did have some experience to share which i felt relevent. And glad you're happy with yours! I'm not a big enough T'bird fan to go for a Gibson one but i've toyed with the idea of an Epiphone one, and you're not helping :lol:I don't really have an extra £200-£500 to spend and i have a list of 30 things in that price range to throw money at haha!
No, I didn't post for a row, I just wanted to give a balance of opinion, and I respect yours, which you are perfectly entitled too. Before my purchase I had only had P Basses, and I searched long and hard in making the decision to buy. I actually did not want to like the TBird, just so I could say, Ha! P Basses are the best. I spent the best part of an afternoon in the shop with the Tbird up against a 60th Anniversary PBass, both played thru Mark Bass, then Orange... just plucking the A string on both and listening. The shop suggested I bring my own rig down, and I nearly did! I then went away to think for 2 weeks whether I could justify spending that amount of money, but she was still there when I went back. My feeling is the PBass is like Church Bells ringing, whereas the Tbird is a Grand Piano Also looked at the Epi Pro, and was very taken with a natural oil one, for the money they are spot on, very good value. But worth the extra for the Gibson? Two different things, like comparing apples and oranges, but a purchase like a TBird has to come from the heart.
I got the Labellas as they seem got favourable comments. I had only ever seen one set of flats before and they were the ones I put on my Beatle bass. anyway a crappy recording I done for someone asking about the flats on a Dirnt http://soundcloud.co...een-day-holiday Don't Mock they playing please. I am naturally crap but that was done whilst trying to stay awake for a sleep deprived ECG so it's worse than usual
Playing is fine. She sounds very mellow and rich, when i built this one up she was more metalley (but not heavy) and attacking. Once the finish is done I'll rebuild and maybe mess on with the pup, but definitely no cheese-grater stainless strings. I was looking at sexy Seymour Duncan Vintage's... maybe. Hope to start lacquering this weekend. -
I've played 2 Gibson Thunder birds and as much as i liked them was not impressed with the quality for the price, and one was a Gibson custom shop! The finish was patchy, the neck wasn't even, the neck felt like it had been coated in goo and some came off on your hand. Though i heard that one went back to factory and after much eeerrrring and aaahhhhing got back in acceptable condition. The Custom shop was just full off niggles you wouldn't expect from a Custom shop, like loose screws, dodgey pots, frets not being smoothed off, but once that was all seen too it was a great bass Played an Epiphone one which i really liked, and someones Goth (like Delberthots) Epiphone Tbird with orginal Tbird Pups that sounded good! Overall the Gibbo and Tbird thing isn't my sound, but the right one through the right (has to be valvey as possible!) rig sounds monster!
The other side of the coin.. I bought an '11 model brand new some months ago, and I love it. The finish is excellent, the build quality spot on. Yes, the bridge is a bit historical, so fitted mine with a hipshot supertone which made her fuller and richer. Had a pro set-up and she now has a pretty fast action. A very beautiful machine. Two crits, tho.. The barrel jack input is a poor design compared to the spring clip type input, and they have skimped on the build quality for the hard case.
Mines the "Vintage white" in other words someone dropped some yucky yellow into the white spray pot So you have the Pups too. I had the intentions of changing mine but they sound great to me. Especially now she is on flats.
Interesting. Flats. I thought the Pup a little middy, but then again the strings I've got are horrible skinny stainless steel things, and was going to put on fatter nickels. I've never had flats before, what do you recommend? -
You tried out the Dirnt neck yet to see how you like the Profile? you should really just buy the rest of the bass to go with it.. But them I'm Biased
I have everything, bar the body, and yes tried the neck, and love it (that's why I didn't sell it on and decided to do this). I was looking at buying a finished Allparts body, but I'm on a budget and setting myself a challenge to do this as cheap as possible. What finish do you have on yours? -
Looks nice. I think the problem with that wood though is you can see the layers on the contour at the bottom.
You can, I think that this body was either a solid colour, or perhaps a sunburst where you could not see the edges. I was thinking about painting a solid colour, but started to enjoy its nakedness, hence toning things down with dye where the grain is still visible. I scored a bargain with the body, but it looked like it had been painted with tar,and took an age to hand sand, as paint stripper would not work. I wish I'd taken some earlier pics of that. As long as I end up with a reasonable result, I'll be happy. This is my second re-fin, and all I'm wanting from this is a work-a-day bass -
I was too sore to cook the Mrs too pregnant I wasn't too sure how they went together but I no some folk like their tight pockets around these parts.
Well, like most things, it's not the rounded end that counts, but the width. And that was certainly nice and tight.
