To mod, or not to mod: Gibson Thunderbird?
Billy Apple replied to bigsmokebass's topic in Repairs and Technical
If you're after vintage style tuners with a modern twist, I highly recommend Gotoh resolite GB640's or GB528's (smaller back plate). They are super lightweight, have a cleaver little hidden tension adjuster and fully look the part as opposed to the Hipshot Ultralites. Expensive, but worth it. I'm having the GB528's put on my NR TBird build and have the 640's on my JV P. -

Bass Lessons: Are they worth the money?
Billy Apple replied to Naetharu's topic in General Discussion
As long as you get the right teacher, then I'd say invaluable. It's always good to get a brush-up too every now and again. Luckily I've had good experiences with the likes of Jake Newman. -
I mean, it's all very well saying 'But what about the epiphany I had when I saw the Housemartins at the Piper Club in Hull in 19-er-something? That's valid!' Well, yes, one's epiphanies and experiences are always valid. But when considered in a historical context it's like the difference between World War 2 and the Falklands conflict. It is not a question of validity. It is a question of scale and scope. Tie this in with the social possibilities inherent to a disruption of The American Way and you can see why the establishment and the counter-culture alike saw the Beatles as a Big Thing. See below - FBI file from August 1964 detailing Beatles concert appearance as 'a perfect vehicle for riots if racial elements or organisation subversive or otherwise were to capitalise on this vehicle'. And that's even before things got really trippy and anti-war:
Maybe, but I imagine the FBI would be making reports about anything happening on their patch. I'm not saying it's insignificant, but I wonder how many memos about racial and subversive elements were made that week. They've certainly not been the only act to be subject to dark forces. I'd be interested in what the FBI had on Elvis before and who can forget this gem from our own lot after;
Now we're talking! And Gaye Bykers; we supported them a number of times as well - far more my shot of JackyD than Carter...
It's all coming back to me. I also saw Tad there in all. That was a great gig, he stage dived and flattened the front row. 8 Way Santa must be a candidate for an underrated album -

I saw Head Of David at Edwards No.8 Bar in Brum. Now there's an underrated band. -

I listened to the Rich Kids and I did think punk-lite. I squarely lay the blame at Midge Ure's door. -

I'd lend my EAD 212 for the cab shoot out, but seeing as i) it's the best sounding cab ever built and ii) nigh on impossible to get a hold of, I think I'd better not. I wouldn't want to be responsible for hoards of depressed bass players crying that they can't get their mitts on my precious unobtainium. -
He might do well running, after all he just has to talk knackers. It's not like he has to do anything creative like making music.
but also due to bubinga being the wood used on the full blown NT Thumb and being a more expensive option as I recall.
Interesting, as mentioned I found both woods the same price from suppliers. I thought Ovangkol had the more interesting grain and is lighter, so for my humble needs it would be the choice between the two. Having said that the woods bear such a variety of colour and grain that IMO it would be pretty easy to think that one was the other.
-
I suppose the lesson is when buying a s/h Warwick to check the data-base first. I don't know much about Warwicks, but do they price differently for Ovangkol and Bubinga?
-
Also does the Warwick site give both the neck and the body wood?
-
But you went and tried out the bass? I've done some research on the two woods and they are remarkably similar, in fact they are related and wholesale suppliers price both the same. Ovangkol is slightly lighter, yellowish in colour and seems to have more grain whereas Bubinga is more reddish in colour. Post research when I look at the drop box pictures I thought the bass represented Bubinga more than Ovangkol. What I'm saying is that this might not be an unreasonable mistake to make, especially if the seller was told the same when they bought it. How many of us are really up on our African hardwoods and often the same wood has different names, for example Ovangkol is also known as Shedua. I got most my info from http://www.wood-database.com/ if anyone else wants to have a look. I also have to ask what do you think the seller would gain from this deception? While I understand you are aggrieved, I think the title of the thread could be revised. You say yourself that the bass was fairly priced and he was decent enough to give you a brew. It's not like you got the bass home to discover it was a fake.
I can't imagine that the magic was at the same level as my generation experienced with The Beatles. Blue
I dunno. Seeing Motorhead at Newcastle City Hall in 1980 was pretty bloody good. Awesome, as you might say.

When did you get the Orange/Matamp? -
My Ampeg used to get more powerful as it warmed up, but not necessarily hugely louder. Obviously something to do with how the power section works as it gets hotter. You might find there's some kind of regulating do-hicky not functioning as it should. How long have you had it and is it under warranty? Also have you tried contacting Mesa customer service? http://www.mesaboogie.com/support/contact-us.html

Bump for a great bag. I've got one and they are top notch. Interesting that you feel they don't suit angled head-stocks. My Spector has one and it's fine. Loads of padding and holds the bass rock-solid. I think your link is bust tho. Is it this one? http://www.harvest-guitar.com/en/Cow-Big-Milled.html
