Big valve amp fail. Ashton BV cap explodes..
Billy Apple replied to VTypeV4's topic in Amps and Cabs
I know nothing about Ashton stuff. Any background to the amp, please? -
Just edited the topic title from NBD to an on-going concern I never would've thought I'd buy another P in standard livery, but having tried out Clarkys JVP over at Happy Jacks I was hooked! I loved the neck, the weight and the tone when attacked with a pick. So, I've bought one of my own which arrived the other day. It came with quite a bit of mojo, so with telephone advice from the Doc I set about pulling it apart, cleaning and rebuilding. As far as I can tell the bass is 100% original, although the front strap button was pulling out and has been bodged by stuffing wood in to get a bite and the screw seems to be a smaller diameter than the back button. The pots and pups are unmolested, and there is a brass plate underneath the pups which is identical to the one on my Matsumoko Westone T1A. The tuners had plenty of thumb-smeg, so I set about them with a toothbrush and solvol. I did the same with the bridge and was pleased the intonation was pretty much bang on when it all went back together. Before and after.. The clear-coat had slight bloom which Howard advised to rub out with metal polish, and it all came up sparkly, plus cleaned up the frets, nut and neck. I've strung her with a set of La Bellas, and a quarter turn on the heel mounted truss rod was enough to set the relief first time. So without further a-do I'd like to present my de-reliced '83 Squier JV P

When is a bass considered a "high end" bass?
Billy Apple replied to Cameronj279's topic in General Discussion
As a digression, one might also note the prevalence of ads featuring scantily clad babes in leather bikinis,
I had a leather bikini once. Paid top dollar for it, but one wash in me Bosch and it was knackered. It shrunk so much even Ronnie Corbett could not get it to cover Kelley's eye. I've been a polyester man ever since. -
Pretty sure ACS and ER are the same company? I have the 15db cut filters and they do a great job of 'turning down the volume a bit', although I do find that there is a bit of treble missing with them in. I have the ER4 earphones, and the moulded ACS earplugs fit perfectly onto them, to create extremely comfortable, superb sounding earphones.
ER is the older range from ACS. I know this because I've just become the proud owner of a pair of ACS Pro 17's. I had them done at the shop in the John Henrys studios. They are the the best fit ever. Yet to encounter serious volume, but they've offered the facility to change out the filters to 20's if need be. The ACS stuff is an another level when it come to ear plugs. They aint cheap, but what price your lug 'oles? http://www.acscustom.com/uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=105&Itemid=52

I played thru a PF500 in a shop, and I thought it a very good sound. However all I've read on here about them is that they're not too reliable. Personally, I'd want a bigger cab, but that's just me. I'd wait and try a few things out before buying blind.

Yer Solovair is to Matamp what Docs is to Orange. Or something. -

Solovair are made by NPS (Northampton Productive Soc) and were licensed by Griggs to manufacture the Martens brand. Griggs bought the licence from Germany. So, yes Solovair are made with all the original lasts, cutters and machinery. After farming out production to the far east, Griggs have seen the success of Solovair and are back in production here with the pricey Made In Britain Docs. Both can be acquired at the British Boot Company, Camden, along with George Cox Creepers and all other manner of sexy stuff.. http://www.britboot.co.uk/engine/shop/index.html -
As some will know, I'm in a Beatles tribute band. We normally play theatre shows and some private functions, but last night we had a pub gig as a bit of a favor for the landlord we know. Anyway, as a bit of a change from playing the Hofner, I decided to a whole gig on my rick! Outrageously bad taste playing all the pre 66 stuff on the rick but it was nice to do a full set with it. It's a 4003 in maple glow, rocking the post Beatles era stripped look. Mines from 1997 and I concur, they are special.
What amps and cabs do you use for the authentic Beatles sound? Any pics of the rig?

Barefaced Cabs - Retro six10 and Retro Two2
Billy Apple replied to JamesBass's topic in Amps and Cabs
Isn't that always the downside to going 'boutique'? Either faster product replacement cycles or worse still the company disappears leaving you with something that depreciates quicker than a quick thing on a quick day.
I'd not be happy if when placing my order I'd not been told about the new improved model that was round the corner. -

Are people who bought the 69'er not a bit miffed that it's been side-lined so soon? -
First thing I would do is ring Watford Valves and see what they say about it. Don't email them - you'll never get a reply!
^This-ington.

Guild Starfire Bass announced at NAMM
Billy Apple replied to EssentialTension's topic in Bass Guitars
How did it compare with the Coronado?
The Coronado has more possibilities then the Starfire with having two pups. I've not noticed the Coronado being low output, but given the Bisonic probably has more oomph. The Starfire may only have one tone, but it was very good.. woody with bite. Between the maple Coronado and the Mahogany Starfire you could maybe compare a TBird to a P bass.. of course don't hold me to that! Both feel good in your hand and have a size that belies their scale. I think the Starfire body slightly slimmer and the neck may be fuller but with the same width. The one thing I did not like about the Starfire is that the pup is fixed. I could've easily got the action down on the one in Wunjos, apart from the strings might be banging off the pup. In my book this is a fail as you have limited set up options. The one thing that the Starfire scores majorly over the Coronado is the weight. The Starfire is noticeably lighter and the weight of my Coronado has been my only -ve. When I ditched the useless factory strings for La Bellas on the Coronado it transformed the bass, and a set of La B's on the Starfire would make a formidable combination. -
Here is a comparison between my Walnut 2014 4003 and my 2013 Jetglo 4003.
The Walnut is more 'in yer face'
So have I! Forgot to post on here though. I went to Andertons a with the cash in hand but was sadly disappointed with the bass. The sound was lovely but the QC was shoddy. They had another in the stock room which I had requested to see but after nearly an hour of waiting I left.
The one I played was spot-on. Very well finished -
