The Juggernaut has been discontinued for ages, searched the net to get one a while ago and when it finally came I was pretty disappointed, sounded nothing like the guitar ones!

Lots of people on here use Jackhammers now, they're nice and cheap (about 20 to 30 quid used), and the EQ is pretty versatile and can compensate for any low end loss you might encounter

Jackhammers look really good! I found a thread where a bloke runs some pink noise through different pedals into a frequency analyser to get an idea of their EQ response with them set flat.

    Here's a Tech 21 BDDI:

    And here's a Jackhammer:

    Not half bad!

The bass player from The Haunted uses Rat pedals and I actually love his tone so much! Didn't get on with the Juggernaut (bass specific rat) though!

Marshall Jackhammers are good too :D

Cool, I'll have to check them out! I'd heard the Juggernaut wasn't so great but I haven't tried one - I think I'll just see how long I can, erm, 'borrow' my brothers Rat before he needs it back ;)

Marshall Jackhammer? If I'm not careful I'm going to get guitar pedal GAS on top of bass pedal GAS

Looks like an old one, any idea what year it is? The quality has been slowly declining over the years but I love the old ones, possibly my favourite dirt pedal ever for guitar along with the Harmonic Percolator. Very different beasts though. I got a cheap one off E-bay and swapped out the chip for the classic one. And put in a superbright green LED but I don't think that effects the sound :D

I lent mine to Finbar to try out on bass but he never ended up with one so I'm not sure he got on with it. I believe it's what the guy from Glassjaw used on the 1st album which is why he wanted to try it.
I don't know exactly what year it is, I just know that my brother bought it second-hand and well used about 17 years ago, so it's quite old! Going to have to check this Harmonic Percolator, it sounds very fun :D
Super-bright? So now it's not only deafening but blinding? You live a dangerous life!

glad you like the rat II on bass, to me there was far too much bottom end loss.

the rat II was better imho
This Rat's one of the original Rat IIs - I think the current one has a slightly different circuit. Yeah there was a bit of a low-end loss but nothing a bit of EQ can't solve. If you shove a load of bass into it sounds ace imo :)

  5. I borrowed my brother's ancient and battered RAT II to play Song 2 by Blur as requested at a wedding gig.
I was told it should do the job.
    Oh my life.
This pedal's so crazy it actually scares me a little. The distortion is ridiculously thick and nasty. So much fun. Try one out if you can :D

That's all really, I was just compelled to post about it after experiencing it!

Okay, I suppose a good topic would be: does anyone else own any guitar pedals then coincidentally sound awesome with bass?

  6. Hello chaps :)

On behalf of my brother I am delighted to offer you one XXL Spider pedalboard/flightcase. Sold at flightcase Warehouse HERE. It packs enough pedals to satisfy the even the most pedal-hungry guitarist/bassist (aka my brother). It has been used for many years without incident and is in great condition (but of course there are inevitably a few small marks to prove it - however nothing that detracts from the function/looks particularly bad/is really that noticeable at all). Can fit a lot more pedals than shown in my pictures below, he's downsized a fair bit already! More photos can of course be taken if you want to get up close!

He's after either a smaller pedalboard and/or a tuner pedal with cash adjustment depending on the item, or £70 :)

    Cheers for looking!
    Ben

Little Pro Co Rat for scale there ;)

[s]Also, a Digitech Whammy (the version previous to the new current one). This one comes with the original box and instructions! Has a few marks from general rocking and functions perfectly. £85 including postage?[/s] SOLD

[s]Finally, an MXR Dyna Comp. One of those simple but effective types. £40 posted?[/s] SOLD

Yes, check early Talkbass threads on these amps. Some have had similar problems - though must admit, I never had any with mine, and used it a fair bit, though always with the full load of 4ohms.
Will do, thanks :)
I'd never had any problems with mine either until it decided to be lazy this evening!

When they first came out these amps suffered a lot of problems, according to Talkbass posts.

    Is this an older amp?
Not unless it had been in stock for a while - I only bought it new from GAK a couple of months ago... and then of course a couple turned up on here pretty much new for £100 less

Some SMPS can be sort of sensitive to power fluctuations I think. And one of the mini Ampeg heads was sensitive to impedance (which caused issues with the mini 2x10 cabs they came with, so might not be that head). Were you using all speakon? A part pulled out jack could have shorted and make trouble.
Ahh the elecricity in the venue can be a little bit iffy every now and then so that might be it! I've used those cabs with the head quite a few times with no issues and I was using speak-on only :)

    Thanks!

  10. Hi guys, I was just wondering if anyone could help me figure what went wrong with my head this evening?

We did two sets in a fairly big venue. I had a 1x15 and a 2x10 stacked for monitoring on-stage (but only running the 2x10) and the FOH signal was coming from the DI output on my Ampeg PF500. The first set went fine - sounded ace. At the end, I turned the volume down on my bass, hit the mute switch on the amp and left it like that for the 20 minute interval. When I came back though, we went straight into the first song and there was nothing from the cab. I could hear the boom from the FOH system and managed to get through it on that before quickly switching to the 1x15 in a quiet section. Still no sound. Then I noticed the fault light had come on on the amp, so I turned it off and left it for about ten seconds (hurrah for really long quiet sections) before rebooting it. Still nothing from the cabs, but I could hear the FOH still working fine, so I played the rest of the set based on the general rumble I could hear, mourning what I guessed was the death of my power-amp. Weird though, as the gain was set at less than a quarter and the volume at under half, so I was hardly driving it.

However, after just about making it through the gig, I had a chat with the bloke on PA, rebooted my amp again after about 5 minutes, and it worked fine! He double-checked my channel on the desk and there was nothing out of the ordinary - just a bit of EQ - no phantom power or anything.

Obviously I'm happy it works again, but it'd be nice to know what happened so that I can hopefully avoid it re-occuring!

    Cheers!
    Ben

  11. The first thing I listen out for when coming up with lines is what the kick, snare and any other rhythm instruments are doing. These provide the fundamental rhythm pattern so working around those should let you know where to fatten up/emphasise a beat with a big low note or two. Generally less is more - the trick is in balancing leaving enough space for everything to stand out whilst taking up enough room to support it and beef it up. Don't worry if your part seems musically uncomplicated - I used to think it was impressive to throw in as many tricks as I could, when infact it only made me sound arrogant and the music sound bad. In my opinion, the real joy in bass playing is just sitting on a good groove. Runs and fiddly stuff sound ace... in the right place. :)

    hehe, thanks Nick :)

I have to say, I have always wanted to try flats, but I am not sure whether I could still get that gritty edge to my sound with them.
Try out some D'addario Chromes maybe? They can go pretty bright for flats :)

  13. I'm guilty of the default E too. It's knowing you can always bring it down to a big fat open E root note. :D

...even though I play a 5-string now which goes down to B?

  14. Sounds like it might be a pre-amp problem to me - my Warwick starts to distort on the lower notes when the battery starts to go. Also, active basses can be a lot louder than passive ones, so maybe you could try turning down the input gain on the amp? When I switch from my passive Precision to my active Warwick I have to take the gain on the amp right down otherwise it'll distort.
    Hope that helps :)

I can't say from 1st hand experience of basses ...... but I have a couple of solid Gibson guitars and a hollow Gibson (an SG, a Les Paul, and an ES335) they ALL have the same exact same pickups and hollow bodied ES has a sort of woodier thicker tone ....almost as if there is a miniscule amount of delay added.

I guess if a bass did the same thing it would be wicked.

Mmm. Sounds good! I'd love to try one with some flatwounds!
