1. Status make short scale flats with black windings. I think the size is 45-105
2. From Nottingham Jam Cafe gig on Thursday, 20/03/14, just to prove that we do actually have a drummer:
3. Aphex Twin. **WARNING - some may find somewhat unsettling**: http://youtu.be/h-9UvrLyj3k And after that trauma, here's something beautiful - Radiohead: http://youtu.be/IrTB-iiecqk
4. If the noise gets too much, just make your way to the amphitheatre bit of the main atrium, where the WWF-style wrestlers will be practicing their routines for that night's show. True.
5. The Jam Cafe last night, a tiny but lovely venue with a continental feel. Gig not bad for a Thursday, some dancers and a reasonable number of people. A highlight was that the rider was not the usual crappy Carlsberg, but a nice Chinese beer instead. The act on after us were great - grimly rap/ragga with bass and drums backing. The bass player was really nice and very talented. Slight awkwardness with the drummer, as we soon recognised him as the chap who had unsuccessfully auditioned (as keyboard player) for our band a while back! It was all pretty friendly thankfully. Oh, and it got to play my own rig. I bloody love that amp :-)
6. Our next gig is next Saturday (29th) at The Maze, Mansfield Rd, Nottingham. We're playing with London-based reggae outfit Only Joe. https://www.facebook.com/events/1414571815456423/?ref=2&ref_dashboard_filter=upcoming This should be a great night: http://youtu.be/jXcag-F3gzE
7. I can't wait for this! Just a reminder, it's hard to predict no-shows, but as it stands, we're very tight for space. A couple of basses each only please (ACG excluded) and let's try to keep to a sensible number of rigs. Sharing rigs won't be a problem. Cheers
8.
Ive had it where ive been gigging almost next to the subs and the notes i was playing didnt sound like the notes coming out of the subs - even though i was sure they were?!!
Yeah, this is it! One of the times it happened to me, we were gigging with a dub sound system in a small venue. I was playing through their 14kw Void Soundsystem, with stage monitors and a 6x10 on stage, yet could hardly hear a note. For the audience, however, it was epic.
9. All good stuff, thanks. I'll make sure that my DI is set to pre eq and then boost mids as necessary. What I should have made clear is that this is a monitoring issue only, not a problem for front of house. In this band more than any other, there is no competition for my frequencies. It's not a 'what sounds great solo can get lost in the band mix' issue. I was expecting a lot more "out of phase" themed answers to explain the phenomenon, but maybe I'm way off here?
10. There is some info on this thread from the gigs forum: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/231560-my-last-gig-with-kit-richardson-supporting-francesca-belmonte-tricky-the-barfly-london-nw1-thurs-20-march-2014/page__pid__2400638#entry2400638
11. It has happened with different bands. One had keys, rock guitar, sax, drums and vox. My current band has a very simple bass, drums and clean reggae guitar + vox
12. You set your rig up on stage, turn up the volume and play a few lines - it sounds great. Then you plug into the PA and do a soundcheck - it sounds OK. Then you start the gig, and you can barely distinguish the notes, like everything above 200Hz has been erased. You play the gig mostly by memory, unable to tell an E♭ from an E Anyone else get this? It only happens sometimes, and I'm guessing it's to do with the waves from the rig and PA hitting eachother at exactly the wrong time. What can be done? Up the mids? Move the rig?
13. Another funny BC pun thread......just make sure they stay away from TB
14. I would definitely have agreed with you on that Shell. Reputation and professionalism aside, it just shows no respect for the organisers.
15. It just doesn't seem fair that such quality music isn't sustainable when there is so much tripe out there making money :-( Again, sorry to hear this, and hopefully Kit's next venture will have more commercial success, and that you get onto another great project ASAP.
16.
Whether you are rubbish or not is largely irrelevant - IF you are enjoying yourself. Are you in a band? I found early on that joining a band really pushes you and makes you a better player much more quickly
BOOM! Exactly what I was going to write
17. Nice. Have you kept the SG too?
18. Bands I've been playing with have mostly been using Fenders, with the occasional Warwick, Yamaha, Musicman and Double Bass. I don't think I've ever played with someone using a Ric or TBird
19.
thanks for that suggestion....there are no worthwhile bass rig suppliers in Nottingham. any other suggestions within reasonable range of Nottingham?
Come to the Midlands Bass bash (details in my sig) as there will be loads of rigs to try/hear there IMO, modern bass amps do modern tones best, and old-school valve does valve sounds best. I've tried to get the old valve tone from loads of different modern amps, and many are very close, but ultimately they lack that valve power section compression/sag/bounce.
20. Yesterday was Chemical. Brothers and Fluke. Today, it's Alice Russell - superb voice: http://youtube.com/watch?v=VnR_4dXbyhs
21. The occasions where I don't use my own rig are things like festivals where there is a hired rig, or multi-band lineups where another band is supplying the rig (a large proportion of our gigs are multi-band jobs) It's not a matter of my rig not being portable, but swapping rigs seems so much hassle in terms of stage space, extra time, and soundguy disapproval. 100% of our gigs are at a place with in house PA and engineer, and they are usually keen to put the bass through the PA, even if it's a small venue. I suppose they like the control.
22. I've been doing some working out. In the last two years, only at around 40% of gigs have I been using my own rig. Of those, only 20% don't go through the PA. That's four gigs in two years where I get to hear purely my own amp, undiluted by PA That's about £375 per gig :-D Is it really worth the time, effort and money we put into getting our perfect rig? The answer, illogically, is yes.
