On the subject of being paid in odd currency, I'll repeat an anecdote I had put in my status. We were recently asked to do a fundraiser gig for a refugee charity, and the band agreed to do it for free (after expenses) My text to the organiser was meant to be "We'll do the gig for now't" Some collusion between typo and auto correct changed it to "We'll do the gig for Moët"

Soundcloud working fine for me just now. Nigel, you should have just voted for the one with the nicest shape :-D That makes me think - I know a way to get more people to come and vote - make the challenge "who can compose a track that most closely resembles a knob in Soundcloud". watch the votes flood in! :-D Well done The Boy. I'm glad you won, as I voted for you. I found the song so understated, yet so catchy. Top quality stuff, It was by no means a easy choice though, I loved several of the others too, and ALL were of a very high standard. Well done all.
I've got no idea if I will be there. The other event for the 10th that we committed to may not actually happen, or may happen on May the 17th instead of the 10th. When is the cutoff for deciding whether to go or not?
There's no cutoff, mate, just turn up if you can. Knowing numbers in advance helps with organisation, but any surprise attendees on the day will be more than welcome :-)
I like the growing ACG list, as it's one builder I've majorly cOnsidered the past few months to sort me out buying basses every week. Anyone know a good way of getting to the venue from Nottingham, I don't drive!? Ste

If anyone lives (or can get) near Bulwell/Junction 26, I'll be driving from there down to the bash at around 10:30. I'll have spare room for three people, one smallish rig, and two or three basses. I'll be staying at the end to tidy up etc, so may not get back to Nottingham till around 18:30 PM me if you're interested If no one is interested, I'll just bring both my rigs :-D

£500 That would put me off anything regardless where it's made and buy whom. You can get a fender US replacement neck for a lot than that new.
+1 £500 for a ten year old neck that may or may not be genuine from a seller who is reluctant to send more pics? I think you know what to do ;-) Even after charges, surely this would be much cheaper, and guaranteed quality: http://www.warmoth.com/Showcase/ShowcaseNeck.aspx?Bass=1&Body=1&Spotlight=1&Path=Spotlight&i=BN4361
It's called No Off Switch and it's a very good read. The acts you mention are best understood in the context of their place in time - they were so different to everything else, like a breath of fresh air and a beacon of light.
Cheers. Not in the Kindle store, so had to go old school! I'm glad I did as I ordered the hardback for £2.80 posted! -
I just finished Andy Kershaw's autobiography, which I highly recommend. His favourite 3 acts were Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and The Ramones and he explains how they affected him hugely when he first heard them. They each touched his soul in different ways, along with lots of other people including me. You had to be there at the time to get it - who feels it knows it
That book sounds just the ticket, nice one cheers -
I was torn this month, but in the end one of the tracks had a very addictive hook so that's where my vote went.
I think I know the one - I've been unwittingly singing it while washing up, obviously a good sign

What's your budget? This ticks your boxes: http://www.gak.co.uk/en/tc-electronic-combo-staccato/29856?gclid=CJi95ej96bwCFZMbtAodhkcAdQ Or if that's too rich, the much cheaper BG250 might be loud enough, although it's 250w and 1x12 Edit: iCastle of the same mind as me, but quicker on the draw :-)
Thanks for this, guys. Warm vintage (possibly aggressive) is what I like. I'm totally happy with my current set-up (after a long search), but on the other hand is the STM close enough to 'that' tone for me to leave 35kg (77lb) of valve ampage at home? Is the 'small lack of quality in the tone' acceptable? And would the 600 do me as opposed to the 900, which by all accounts is bloody loud? I think perhaps it's time for me to invite myself round to bert's for a comparison. Edit: Apologies for the slight derailment, by the way.
I predict the following programme: 10 loving valve bounce 20 after a while start getting fed up with lugging 30 switch to Streamliner 40 after a while start to crave valve bounce 50 switch to valve 60 GOTO 10
Why do you want or need to understand the appeal? You know it does nothing for you, isn't that enough? I'm genuinely curious.
I suppose it's a bit like trying to understand peoples' reasons for voting. I may never vote for the Conservatives, but I still see value in understanding why so many people do; it tells me something about widely-held opinions about wealth distribution, welfare, community etc., and ultimately more about the state of the country and the people in it. Similarly, if there are reasons for liking certain music that I'm unaware of, I'd like to know to better my understanding. Was it popular because it hit during a recession, and people love the angry lyrics because they're pissed off about the same things? Was the band genuinely different to everything else at the time? It all helps create a better understanding of music and how it fits into peoples' lives. -
Very glad you like it, though I would have been surprised if you hadn't! Great review. Apologies for the slight digression here, but I have a couple of questions: How does the Streamliner hold up against the SVT CL? I've heard the STM is warm, round and valvey but will it do 'that' valve thing like the SVT does? You know, the 'big bounce'? And if not, would the STM make a decent back-up amp? Is it as good as everyone says it is? Thanks, and congrats on your new purchase. It will certainly loosen up a bit as chris_b says.
I've A/B'd the Streamliner with my valve amp. The Streamliner is a very good amp, and has some cracking tones which are have a nice bit of grind and warmth. I also really like the EQ section. However, it does not quite recreate the bounce/sag of a valve power section. It's close enough for the band, it's close enough for the audience, but is it close enough for a bass player who is used to an all-valve sound? Possibly not* The combination of size, weight and tone, however, would make it a great backup amp. * Saying that, Bertbass seems happy having replaced his Mywatt for the STM

Just resurrecting this thread to share more thoughts on the '69er. Something I think I took for granted before was that it is so shallow (just over 12"). It means that it's easy to manoeuvre, tucks snugly at the back of the stage, and can even fit in the boot of my car when it's in tiny-boot-seven-seat mode! It is still very much a niche cab though. It's great for rock/bluesy/funky stuff, but recently my tastes are going towards super-clean deep reggae tones. It does this ok, but it wasn't built to be clean and deep, and I've encountered its limitations in this regard. So I started looking around for a suitable clean cab. This time when searching, it had to be 13" deep or less, which narrowed the field somewhat. One Super Twin on the way :-)

Fair enough. Just to clarify, I'm not necessarily trying to like this music, just understand the appeal. For example, other than singing along to Copa Cabana when it comes on the radio, I'm not into Barry Manilow at all. However, I can see why he has hoards of (mostly middle-aged lady) fans, I can understand the appeal. -
Is there a band you're fanatical about?
Of course there are bands/artists that I'm really into (not fanatical) but they're a bit more niche, and tend not to be the sort that are universally lauded by music critics and the like. I looked online for bands with the most fanatical/cult followings. A few I don't know, but for most of the others, I may not be into their music, but I can at least understand why they have such a profound effect on some people. Not so with the examples in the OP -
**This post is not meant to upset anyone, just a genuine attempt to understand something that I don't get** There are several musical acts who seem to have a fanatical or cult following, but I just don't get them at all. Two examples below. Please can people tell me, with suggestions for listening material (as I really only know the famous songs) why the following are so well respected in music circles: Bruce Springsteen - In my very limited experience of Mr S, it's just a bloke in double denim croaking lots of words into a microphone over average rock music. What am I missing? Why is he sooo popular among music lovers? The Ramones - I get that they helped spearhead the punk movement, and that their short fast songs were a breath of fresh air in a time of bloated musical excess, but is that enough? The songs I know are semi-catchy, and TBH all a bit samey. Did you have to be there? Of course I understand that not all music is for everyone, but there are some acts that seem to be so revered that I wonder if I'm missing out I'll be taking this seriously, and intend to take any constructive responses on board, and listen to your suggestions. Thanks

I love this album, it has so much groove, with some nice dubby influences. I know several people who can't quite get on with the super-clean production, but when I'm in the right mood, it hits the spot perfectly.

I just tuck the end into the centre and then do as many winds as it takes, ensuring that the string exits at the bottom of the post (no overlaps) I think I've read on BC that this is heresy and all sorts of things will go wrong, but it's always worked for me with very stable tuning.

Yeah, the old nouveau riche gold bathroom taps scenario ;-) It's an immediate repellant for me.
