Wow - really, really hard to choose. I say that each month, but this time I actually mean it Like Discreet says, the standard is growing at a crazy rate. Well done everyone, and good to see a healthy number of entries.

Made A Real Tw#t Of Myself Last Night
Roland Rock replied to Mr Stinky's topic in General Discussion
You're not alone - my most embarrassing musical moment was when I foolishly volounteered to play a song at a jazz jam night after way too many beers. I could probably have handled 'Blue Bossa' or 'So What' in that state, but definitely not Charlie Parker's 'Blues For Alice'. It was such a train wreck that they stopped the song -
: Just in the van on the way back from my gig last night with Musical Youth at the watering hole in perranporth, Cornwall. We played another excellent set. The crowd loved it and the venue was jam packed ,it had a low ceiling lots of wood in the construction so the sound was mellow and solid just right for reggae. Jazzyvee
Sounds ideal - glad you had a good gig
I should be there and will be bringing my pair of acgs, one custom 5 with filter pre and one graft fretless 5 with east pre along with my ead 212 cab
I'll take that as an offer for me to try them, rather than just showing off ;-) Thanks very much
If this does not conflict with the show in Edinburgh I might try to get down to this.
That would be great Alan, I'm really keen to try out your filter preamps, and perhaps get some advice on how easily one would fit in my bass.

A song you have always wanted to play live......
.....the whole of Ziggy Stardust...
When I was in my old Bowie band, we did a few gigs where we did the Ziggy album from start to finish - really good to do, and some proper fans appreciating every note. For me, I'd love to do "What is and what should never be" by Zep, "Canned Heat" by Jamiroquai, "A little bit of love" by Free and Aretha's version of "The long and winding road" -
How do you set your volume playing live?
Roland Rock replied to John Cellario's topic in General Discussion
Between 90 and 100% for me -
I used to think it was because I am getting progressively more fatigued and therefore subconsciously lightening my right hand touch , but recently I have begun to wonder if I might have some Uri Geller- like phenomena going on , where the raw power of my funky playing combined with the intense sexual energy I generate with or without a bass guitar in my hand is actually causing the necks of my basses to bow away from the strings and develop a bit more relief as I play them.
If anything is too low, it's your medication dosage.
Sorry to be ignorant, but I'm not 100% sure what 'digging in' means. I'm guessing it means to pluck harder, but is there more to it? I do find that I'm developing my playing in a direction where I like to give the strings a good hefty pluck (fingers or pick). I have my Ibanez SR760 set up with action as low as it will go without buzzing, and that's lower than anything else I have. (The rest are around 4mm at the 12th fret). I find the Ibanez as it is less satisfying to play as I feel I have to pussyfoot around it a bit, rather than being able to just let go.
That's precisely what digging in is, and a good example of how action can be too low

Going to see your old bands - mixed emotions ?
Roland Rock replied to lojo's topic in General Discussion
I've been to see my old tribute band several times; they are on bass player number two since I left. I can't help but think "that's not how I played it" or "why the f*** is he slapping in that song" etc. that said, both players are technically very good players, but when you worked hard to recreate a bass line or add bits that create a lovely pairing with the drum part, it's difficult to see it done differently without being a bit critical. -
I was in a Bowie tribute a few years back and always loved the Spiders era stuff. Trevor always had lovely bass lines. Particular favourites to rock out to were Moonage Daydream and Hang on to Yourself. A whole heap of fun.

Cort tried various body materials before settling on the hideously-named and brittle Luthite: Lucite - aka plexiglass - very transparent tone but too heavy Kryptonite - one player in particular reported very weak output Marmite - couldn't get a consensus on the tone

€590 for an EBS Fafner head seems pretty good. I also like the description "EBS TD650 Head, 450Watts"

Class D amps - do the manufacturers know what they are trying to do?
Roland Rock replied to LukeFRC's topic in Amps and Cabs
Tell me, why do folks think a mute button is useful? My floor tuner does all that is needed, keeping my LMIII nice and simple.
I often don't use a floor tuner. I love having a mute button. -
You can't really compare basses from YouTube clips if they're being played through desktop speakers. In fact, even if they were being played through full-range studio monitors it would make little difference, as people record these clips on wildly differing equipment of dubious quality. The only way to compare bass guitars is to play them and listen to them yourself. There are far too many variables to account for otherwise.
This, definitely. There is a YouTube demonstration of my bass, and it sounds very different to the way it sounds when I play it, through my amp, with my preferred strings.
-
Your list is very diverse; can you tell us the kind of tone you're after? I adore my Glockenklang, the clean tone is sublime. However, I still have my valve amp for old-school sounds.

Just joined. Sayin hi. Advice needed for cleanup of fender jv bass
Roland Rock replied to TheBishop's topic in Introductions
A lot of love for JVs on Basschat - make sure you post plenty of pics Welcome to Basschat -
I tried to get this information when I was selling my HD350 and it's really difficult to find. The best info I could find was anecdotal, saying that the head pushed out 175w at 8ohms. Obviously it's 350 at 2ohms Whatever they are, they are EBS watts that punch well above their weight.

I don't get the logic behind the shocks either. I admire 'out there' finishes, and would prefer that to a quilted or spalted maple top any day. I've seen much nicer steampunk style basses though
