10 Things That Need To Change To Save Independent Venues
Roland Rock replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Absolutely. It seems like every gig I go to these days I have to have a go at some gobby, self-obsessed twat who thinks everybody is there to listen to him rather than the band. I know lots of people who feel the same too, to the extent that many of them just don't even bother going to gigs anymore because of the amount of w***ers in the audience. Years ago this seemed to be primarily a London thing but now it's the same everywhere.
FYI I am not particularly gobby, definitely not self-obsessed, nor am I a twat or a w***er :-) We were near the back (let's say 90% towards the bar from the stage) and got a bit chatty, but we did quieten down when asked. I think it's about balance - you don't want people to spoil the show for you, but also banning conversation (not sure where you stand on the issue of cheering and dancing too?) would lead to a pretty dead atmosphere. -
Hope the gig went well. Was it a house rig? I saw Lee Perry there last year and they had a markbass 6x10 too

10 Things That Need To Change To Save Independent Venues
Roland Rock replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Of course I agree that bands should be paid, but do you think that NOT paying them harms the venue in any way? Is there a shortage of bands willing to play for free? I'm not sure there is, as many will do so to 'raise their profile' and 'get out there'. So, the venue gets to pull extra punters in, but with little or no outlay. They're quids in. So, although this is unfair, I'm not sure that it's a factor when trying to save independent venues. Another point I'm in two minds about is the "STFU during performances" policy (is that notice still up at the Jazz Cafe?) - I suppose I'm hypocritical in that I'll get annoyed if someone is chatting loudly when I want to listen, but then I may well (especially after a few ales) chat to friends. I got a bollocking from a post-rock nerd for chatting to a mate I hadn't seen for ages at Sigur Ros at Brixton Academy last year -
Back up and running now; some explanations here... Soundcloud Status...
Hmmm, maybe this explains the low voter turnout; BCers in Turkey can't access the tracks
unfortunately I tend to get carried away with these kind of discussions. Having grown up in a household where for many years I wasn't allowed to listen to any music other than jazz because anything else wasn't 'worthy' (my dad is a 'jazz purist' - don't mention electric Miles Davis to him, he'll use words that aren't fit for tender ears) anything that smacks of musical snobbery gets my dander up. Although much of it was pretty funny...
Brings to mind this song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kaOGsC1S1s

I think that the BC competition has broken Soundcloud

...and on a totally different slant, a bit of reggae rock! Bullyrag: There is also a superb remix of this song that was a b side on the single, but I can't see to find it online :-( edit: Found it: http://myfreemp3.eu/music/Bullyrag+-+Jump+Up+In+A+Fashion+Overseer

Just a quick update for anyone interested (that includes you, Antone) I now have the power amp! I've been looking at the functions, and there are several possibilities to play with. I will soon have a Barefaced '69er and a Barefaced Super Twin, each are 4 ohms. I can: - run both cabs from one channel, 1000w at 2 ohms - run each cab from each channel, 800w at 4 ohms each side In this second mode, I can play around with crossovers. The '69er is a sealed cab which sounds superb across the range, although when pushing the low frequencies at volume, it does not stay very clean (sounds great in many applications, but not what I'm after ATM) The super Twin is ported, and can handle bass very cleanly at high volume. I can put anything under 90hz through the Super Twin, and anything over 90Hz through the '69er. The theory is that it will retain maximum clarity at very high volume, There are a variety of crossover frequencies to choose from, but 90hz is the one Alex has recommended. Then there is the low pass filter - worth playing with, although I already have a LPF pedal. There is also a sub bass setting, but I'm a bit scared to play with that one! I can also set a limiter so that a gig-share-idiot can't blow the speakers by cranking the levels (although in theory, each cab can handle the full 800w) Can't wait to get the new cab so I can start playing!

I actually found that quite entertaining! A novel juxtaposition, I think one song was enough though....
Is 3mm not a high action?
I wouldn't know, but I'd guess medium I thought you were asking me whether it was actually higher than your other one :-D
-
The action on my new (to me) bass measures 3mm at the 12th fret, which seems high compared to my other bass. Is it not so?
Sorry, not sure I understand - is what not so?
how low is considered low? how do you measure it?
I think that it's the distance between the underside of the string, and the top (crown?) of the 12th fret. I've just measured mine, and it's a whisker over 2mm. I'm not sure where that sits on the spectrum. I'd guessing on the low side of medium.
Brings to mind my self imposed rule of "if you can't say anything positive then don't say it".
Ha, I normally abide by that rule myself, but in this instance offered a bit of design criticism, with a bit of token positivity tagged onto the end to soften the blow. It was hardly vitriolic, and there is much more inappropriate negativity on the forum than that!

To me, the lower horn protrudes a bit too much. Bet it's great though

I've just voted. This month has seen much more of a common theme (with one notable exception) and all are high quality, with their own quirks. Well done everyone

Class D amps - do the manufacturers know what they are trying to do?
Roland Rock replied to LukeFRC's topic in Amps and Cabs
the RH450 which is allegedly LPFed at 80hz
Dubtastic! ;-) -
There are a few BCers who play valve amps through the '69er; myself, Happy Jack, and Bertbass (before he changed to a class D) that I know of. Of those, the biggest was Bertbass' Mywatt 200. Check out his review: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/195595-barefaced-69er-no-4/ Also, Mr Foxen plays valve amps through a few different barefaced cabs.

There's no denying the similarity to the Streamliner, from the brushed, curved facia to the lit valve window, and the three position mid freq control. I like the feet.

Thanks. Didn't want to sound like a knob, like my friend who pronounces a particular Italian bread "foo-cay-sha"

Cheers Stu. Btw, is the first syllable pronounced 'cajon' as in 'cabbage' or 'cajon' as in cage? I want it to seem like I know what I'm talking about when we present it to him
-
Sure thing :-)
In a fit of generousity, I've plumped for Wayne's cajon. It's just looks soo nice, is on offer, and has a bag included. Thanks All
It has arrived already! There's me hoping it would arrive on time for Wednesday's band practice :-D It's the first Cajon I've seen up close, but the quality seems good, and a carry case/rucksack is included, which is perfect, as he will need to get it home on the bus.

I'd highly recommend The Delegators live. They're playing at Camden's Jazz Cafe on the 5th Feb http://mamacolive.com/thejazzcafe/listings/date/2014/2/5/ http://youtu.be/CZjRdOR8h-g http://youtu.be/j0ZjW9KZAVE
