1. Great video, thanks. My favourites would have to be the EB2, then the Jazz then the P
2.
But I think it pays to be a bit discerning when choosing where to invest your time.
I wish I could say that my life is so exciting that after a gig, that I could be spending my time in better ways. Skinny dipping with groupies at the aftershow party, playing Go with Howard Marks, helping at the local animal shelter, or perhaps learning to read music. Alas, at that time of night, the choice tends to be stay and watch the bands, or go home, knock the telly on whilst browsing basschat, then bed Perhaps I'm using 'cameraderie' and 'politeness' as an excuse for a sad and empty life :-D
3.
I don't know if it's 'expected' to to stay and watch other bands but I suspect it probably depends on whether people are just playing for the money or the enjoyment and camaraderie. After all, if it's just a job, who stays after work to watch the next shift?
Yes, I'm definitely in the 'cameraderie' camp. If you were an artist with a display in a gallery, surely you'd take the time to look at the work of the other artists in the exhibition? If you're not an artist, then I'd suggest you're a clown whore ;-) :-D :-D
4. I think that it's polite; an etiquette within the musicians' community. If I can, I'll stay and watch the other bands. However, I'm not so polite that I won't bugger off if I think they are crap :-D Similarly, I always make a point of catching any bands that are on before us.
5.
Surely that's just down to the six 'P's (Prior Preparation Prevents Piss-Poor Performance)? My rechargeable units run for at least five hours so it's a logistics issue, n'est-ce pas?
+1 Just press the button once a week to make sure it beeps
6.
Sorry, can't see that link?
This might help. 22 power cable shoot out ;-) http://www.head-fi.org/t/219202/its-done-power-cord-shoot-out-22-power-cords-reviewed
7.
In the old days you'd be lucky if it was fuse wire because often it would be the silver paper of a sweet wrapper or a fag packet or similar.
Hah, yeah, I've seen paper from a fag packet used. Mr Foxen recently posted a pic of an old guitar string being used too!
8.
To understand what the Bright knob does you really need to run it with an EBS cab!! Paired together they give you an amazing amount of top end and you cannot get that sound from any other cab and believe me I have tried!!
That would explain it! I don't have any tweeters or horns in my cab. I always dial out the high end. Come to think of it, I may have had the treble fully cut on the bass when I tried it :-D
9.
Interestingly, this discussion about curly leads has led me to purchase a couple of these from a BCer : http://www.creative.....aspx?pid=18609 Not retro or vintage of course, but at little more than the price of a Lava coiled cable, I'm not complaining. Edit: Just tried out the system and it works a treat! Free! Free at last!!
That looks a lot like a smoke alarm. Are you sure you haven't just bought a smoke alarm?
10.
Talk about first world problems!
Just to reiterate, the poll was created NOT because of any significant problem, but rather to satisfy my curiosity regarding peoples' default expectations. One thing I've learned is that everyone except me seems to have hundreds of the buggers!
11. I've traded one amp, and bought another in the last month or so. The first was a straight trade. Without even thinking, I packed the cable with the amp and off it went. My new amp arrived sans cable. My only other amp has its cable hard wired in, and I haven't had a desktop PC or monitor since about 1998, so had no others that I could use, the person I traded with said they never usually sent cables, but posted it on to me. The second was a straight cash sale. Again it arrived without the cable, the seller saying that this is the norm. To me, supplying an amp with a cable seemed so obvious, and it was a surprise to come up against this opposing train of thought. so I did a poll :-) I understand that it's not hugely important. I'm certainly not getting 'worked up' about it. Look at is a trivial counterpoint to the heavy 'Gay Thread' in Off Topic :-) It's more an exercise in gauging what people naturally think is the default stance
12. Sand a big area off the back and post a pic ;-)
13. Well, I've had a good play. The GB Shuttle 9.2 is extremely transparent. Set flat, you get that pure instrument tone. When you play with the EQ, the core transparency remains, and the frequencies change in a very predictable and consistent way. The EBS is also very clean, but definitely has more of a voice. When changing the EQ, you can get some more varied timbres. All of these are usable, but it may take a bit more fiddling to get what you're after. They are both incredibly versatile, and can get ultra bright, if that's your thing. I found that with the EBS, you can just 'happen upon' a really sweet tone, whereas with the GB, you dial in what you need, and that's what you get. Overall, I'm favouring the EBS at the moment, as it has a couple of tones which really nail what I'm after. I know it's a wooly term, but the lows have 'girth' whilst still retaining clarity. The GB has this too, but possibly slightly less so. I'm going to gig both before making any decisions. Other observations - What does the 'bright' knob on the EBS actually do? Nothing as far as I could hear! The EBS is heavier and bulkier, but it's still easy to carry and store. Volume wise, the Shuttle is definitely louder (not surprisingly) but now by as much as you might think. The Shuttle is virtually silent at all volumes. The EBS has a noticeable buzz/hum when at higher volumes. I don't see this being an issue when playing though. Oh, and the valve OD on the Shuttle may be lacking, but the drive simulation on the EBS bears as much resemblance to a valve sound as I do to Gok Wan.
14. We have one cover in our repertoire of 25 odd songs. We just came up with more and more originals until we had enough for a set and then started gigging.
15. Maybe try in the 'gigs' forum? I know BCer Seashell goes to jam nights in that area, maybe give her a shout
16. Thanks for responses so far. I've amended the poll so that you can vote for more than one option
17. I'll not go into detail as I don't want to skew things, but a couple of amp transactions recently have contradicted my way of thinking in this matter. This is certainly not a whinge or complaint about the people I transacted with, just a way to see what the consensus is.
18. I've just taken delivery of an HD350 and will be comparing it directly with my Shuttle 9.2, with a view to keeping the one I prefer. Results to follow...
19.
I would suggest that you change your technique so that you don't slide your hand on the back of the neck. If the pad of your thumb is the only thing that touches the neck and you release the pressure when you change position you won't have the problem.
Absolutely - this is why my glossier neck feels stickier when rubbed, but makes no different when played.
20.
Couldn't agree more! I find my hand moves better across a glossy/polished neck, - lower coefficient of friction surely?
This came up in a previous thread, and I found the following random web info: "On polished surfaces exist more contact points between the contact partners. Therefore the friction coefficient is slightly higher, the mechanical losses and the surface temperature are increased. • On smooth, polished, moving surfaces the so called „stick-slip“ effect can have much more dramatic consequences. This is a change of static friction and sliding friction. It is easy to imitate this phenomenon, by trying to slide a hand over a smooth glass surface. On moving surfaces this effect creates vibrations with high frequencies but low amplitudes." I have one glossy neck and one non-glossy. The glossy one is a tad stickier, but it makes zero difference when I'm playing.
21. You don't say exactly head you'll be getting, but if it's the PF500, maybe do some research on BC as many have had problems with reliability. For example: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/223947-pf500-died-yesterday/page__pid__2296875#entry2296875
22. Looks like a lot of kit for the current price. Just don't ask him to deliver!
23. Three years? http://basschat.co.uk/topic/214344-lazy-assed-luthiers/page__p__2171870__hl__inlays__fromsearch__1#entry2171870
24. I don't know the technical stuff, but my amp was modded from cathode to fixed bias. Previously I could switch power valves no worries, but now if I do it ( hasn't happened yet) I'll need to take it to my tech for adjustment. At least that's what my tech told me....
