1. Yeah, i think mine was 1st Aug, and thought that I'd easily have it for this recording We got by with LPF on the software, but I was looking forward to playing with the self oscillation for the overdubs :-(
  2. If all amps and cabs were ultra transparent (I understand that no amp and cab can be fully transparent), everyone won't sound the same, but you would be able to hear each person's fingers and bass more clearly. I've owned a very transparent rig before (Euphonic Audio) but miss the extra timbres that an all valve amp provides. Each to their own.
  3.
Well, I considered taking shots of a bunch of moody-looking basses standing around an alley, probably with one of them wearing a tatty leather jacket and another one trying to look mean, then I thought about showing a bunch of basses jumping around on a floodlit stage while teenaged girls shrieked at them and wet themselves, and then I thought ... sod it! And I reached for the ironing board.
:-D
  4. I'm disproportionately and irrationally amused by the thought of photographing a bass in the garden, on an ironing board. I'm imagining the thought process.
  5. I'm bowled over by how great the Status flats are. Cheap too http://www.status-graphite.com/status/frames/index_home.html
  6.
I have now got a response from Lettsbass. No updates, but the communication makes me rest a bit easier.
Good stuff, at least you know he's alive. Being alive makes it easier to finish a bass.
  7.
Yeh, sorry guys, title is misleading! does this mean I am now banned from the BF lovers club, or will I be strapped to an amp and beaten with a stick? (not the first one please, only just bought my compact!!)
:-D When I first saw it, I was expecting something more scandalous* :-D *The little lawyer on my shoulder told me to write the following statement: "I have no grounds to believe that Barefaced, or any of their employees would actually do anything even remotely scandalous"
  8.
Some of us are terribly vain I'm afraid.
I guess I'm vain too in that I couldn't be happy paying for and regularly playing something that I see to be ugly. Luckily, I love the look of the '69er; no visible ports, and a lovely silver cloth grill. I don't really have an issue with the painted finish. The only BF cab I really dislike the look of is the one with the big baffle across the driver holding a tweeter. It just looks odd to me. Btw, I think that the thread title is a bit misleading - not pricing issues as such, just a query on Barefaced resale values. Unless the 'issue' is that they can't afford one, in which case I have big 'issues' with Ritter and Celinder :-D
  9.
You recording only tomorrow? If its like the rest of the week, i can send mine tomorrow?
It's tomorrow and the next day, but pretty sure the bass parts will be down tomorrow. Thanks for the offer. You never know, it could arrive tomorrow morning :-) I have a contingency plan: I'll be miking up my barefaced '69er which has all three right hand drivers low passed. Hopefully milking these will get an approximation of the sound I'm after
  10.
Also if it doesn't look like it will arrive on time - I can loan you my Xero.
Kind of wish I'd taken you up on your offer now; recording is tomorrow and still no Xerograph. Grrrr
  11.
Surely the word Luthier is a descriptive word for their work. If every carpenter were all lumped together, then you could spend a lot of time looking for someone to build you a fine cabinet.
You'd need a cabinet maker for that. It's a specialist skill, like luthiery
  12.
use the neck pup
Yup
pluck near the neck
Word
However, it's more about what you play rather than the tone.
Amen I play a lot of reggae, mostly roots style, but with a couple of dubby numbers too. It took me ages to realise that getting the tone you want is not so much boosting the frequencies that you want, rather cutting the ones that you don't want. For a nice deep reggae sound, I will leave the bass flat and cut the mids and trebles. This gets a lovely full and deep tone. Dub is a bit different to reggae though. To me, dub is all about stripping it all back to the bone. I love the sound of flats in roots reggae but (to me) dub is not about an old school flatwound thump, but clean and close-to-the-fundamental depth with clarity and sustain. I use rounds for this, as they achieve the aforementioned clarity and sustain. Of course, the vast majority of this is done in production. The closest I've been able to get from a bass rig is to dial out the harmonics and overtones by cutting the highs and mids substantially, but not boosting the bass. This is a bit of an ongoing mission for me, and I have a low pass filter on the way that I'm looking forward to playing around with. This enables the budding dubster to cut the harmonics right out until you feel you have the right frequencies for your needs. You can then boost the frequencies around that cutoff point for speaker-blowing madness. Even though I'm a firm advocate of cutting rather than boosting, I'm still going to have a lot of fun with it!
  13.
Don't get the Mono M80
Totally agree. Good bag, light, good protection, uncomfortable to wear for any distance
  14.
Cheers.
Sorry, he had already bought one from GAK :-( Good luck

You're in the "other instruments" forum, so not sure if you're referring to bass strings? I had the bass strings and really liked them. Possibly an emphasis in the low mids. A few people said they lost their zing too early, but as someone who dials out treble, it seems I didn't notice! In the end, I went with the Status strings, which I find excellent, and cheaper
  16. Nice one Nigel, very enjoyable viewing. I thought from the title that it was going to be some horrendous reggae fusion or something, so was pleasantly surprised. I'm still not a big fan of jazz or rock style solos over reggae, as it can take away from the rhythmic pulse that should be the main feel of reggae IMO Off the subject of reggae, Gil Scott Heron's band are on fire! check out 'the bottle' circa 39.00 For those who enjoy a bass solo, check it out from 45.50. Not my thing really; the simpler grooves are nice (even the slap!) but the widdlier stuff (the repeated patterns chromatically running up and down again) take away from what is otherwise an amazing band performance. Edit: just spotted Lojo's post. I love it too
  17.
if you....never play beyond the 12th fret it may have appeal
I can't see this; do you have an unusual fretting hand position like hooking your thumb over the top of the neck or something? I can see how it could impede two hand tapping, but that sh*t's only for insane people anyway*
there's also the dorkiness factor to consider.
True :-D *No offence intended* *to insane people
  18. Some good stuff there. Not much evidence of blues there for me, although I'd guess that the guitarist is a big Zep fan :-) How about "melodic indie rock" Edit, as per an above post, I did think of folk as well in some places
  19. Next gig is on the 19th of October at The Maze, Mansfield Rd, Nottingham It's a multi band lineup, with the superb reggae of By The Rivers as a climax. It'll be busy https://www.facebook.com/events/516528445090191/?ref=2&ref_dashboard_filter=upcoming By the Rivers: Http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nbK0V-0U18
  20.
We played the Alleycat in Denmark Street. Tiny club which was jampacked. Unfortunately the band before us was a loud mod/Oasis type band with a pissed rowdy following. Throughout our half-hour set their drunken crew kept chanting "Zoots, Zoots, Zoots" (the band's name), leading to middle finger salutes from our lady singers. Shame as we had a fair few people who had come to see us and we played pretty well (not having played together for a month). I would play there again but only if the band line-up was better matched
Sorry to hear that, that would really wind me up too. Ours was The Hop Pole Inn, Bromsgrove. Not a bad gig, but one annoying drunk bloke kept heckling. A more sober lady said we were the best band to have ever played there! Not bad seeing as they have live music three times a week every week, and the chaps from Steel Pulse play there :-) I decided to ignore him and pay attention to her :-) Edit: the landlord has asked us to book in for another couple of gigs, as "everyone has been asking" - nice feedback
  21. And playing with the granddaddy of rap, RIP Http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGaoXAwl9kw
  22. He's fantastic. I love above mentioned album, Aretha's live at the Filmore West album, what a band! And "get off my back woman" from BB king's live and Well. Jerry plays on the second (studio) half of that album, and it's al solid gold stuff. Http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2JghcUgfM4
  23.
it works a treat for dub as a static filter !! (keep the resonance at bay ..) the expression pedal is where the synth stuff comes in, just stick blended fuzz in front, and get massive swells.
What do you mean static filter? Yeah, Shep warned me about keeping that self oscillation in check! I may check out the expression pedal possibilities at some point, but at the moment, I don't have need for those sounds in my band. More importantly, this is my 2000th post
