It's a fair comment, and one that has gone through my mind as the best option. But maybe what I need to do is learn to love the profile.
I'd sell it and go for something more suitable. Having seen the build diary for that gorgeous bass, and how excited you were to get it, it seems a shame that you should have to compromise in such a way. You even have a buyer already lined up! Not a fail situation at all
What amp are you using?
The Streamliner 900. It was your suggestion of the Thumpinator which led me to research it, and I came across the info in post 11. Thanks! I also use a valve amp, but could easily get by only using the LPF with the Streamliner

Thanks for your replies all. With the combination of the sealed cab, the built in high pass filter and listening for signs of danger, I reckon I'll be fine.

I've just discovered something very interesting, considering one of my amps is a Streamliner 900. I was researching Thumpinator on BC, and this came up on the subject of high pass filters:
MB don't but Genz do (well, the Streamliner at least - I can't vouch for the Shuttle, but I imagine it's the same). I was sure my STM900 was cutting everything under 30hz as my cab goes that low quite happily and noticed a difference in floor movement. I spoke to one of the guys at Genz who designed it (he's actually a Talk Bass user too I found out after) and he confirmed it has a filter as part of it's circuitry. That explained why I found the Thumpinator to be doing nothing for me! lol. I should try it again now with my Fafner... not that I actually want to filter out those lows, (my cabs drivers hardly move at the best of times and the amp doesn't break a sweat) but I would like to experience the Thumpinators effects properly.

I don't know why. The Thumpinator will cut sub 30hz which the cab won't be able to reproduce anyway and reduce excessive cone movement. As far as I understand, you'll still get the full bass, via the harmonics, but won't risk the damage. I can't see a down side. As you've got one of his cabs, I'd run this past Alex.
Sorry, I meant cautious with the low pass filter solo. If I do go with the thumpinator, I'll feel a lot safer. I just need to decide whether I really want to spend even more on this whim, or get out altogether!
I often play dub, reggae and ska and tens to roll off the treble and boost the mids a bit on my bass. I never touch the bass EQ on the bass or amp in danger of harming my speakers. If you use 10" or 12" speakers you have to respect their usaable range and more bass is not always the best approach
That's what I am playing exclusively - dub, reggae and ska. I play with the highs and mids backed off and it sounds great. I just wanted a bit of that extra deep fundamental for these couple of tracks. Thanks
What speaker cab(s) do you use? Look up info on the SFX Thumpinator. That will save your speakers.
It's a Barefaced '69er, the sealed 6x10 I'll look into a high pass filter. I think I'm going to have to be very cautious with this! Maybe I'll just keep it for lower volume recording

Barefaced 3rd Generation product range upgrades
Whils't you are all singing the praises of The BF cabs , nobody seems to mention the poor materials used in there construction. I think if you hit a door frame carrying one it through the cab would fall to pieces ,IMO,
Could you elaborate on this please? What are the poor materials? Have you had, or heard of, a BF cab breaking easily? -
I have a query that I was going to run past Alex Barefaced, but I guess he's busy with all this 3G stuff, so I thought I'd open it up to BC instead. My cab has a "usable frequency range of 40Hz - 6KHz", and even though I play down to low b (31Hz) it still sounds immense. I gather this is because I'm hearing various harmonics and overtones rather than the fundamental note. No problems there. I have ordered a low pass filter, as two of our songs are in a dub reggae style, and I'd like to get that pure deep deep tone. My understanding is that as you roll off the highs, you are basically eliminating all of these overtones and getting closer to the fundamental. You can then boost the frequencies around your chosen cutoff point. So the question is, what happens if I boost a frequency below the "usable range"? Will I blow my speakers?

Best way to take a picture of a neck profile.

YOUR ideas for the Recording forum - WHAT'S HAPPENING...
Roland Rock replied to Skol303's topic in Recording
I lost interest in the mixing competition pretty early, just not enough variety for me, and it feels like it's for a pretty niche group. Of course, that's fine, but I feel that a remix competition would open things up to a much wider audience. I would love to listen to a dozen remixes of a set track each month. -
I hope it sounds better than it looks :-) Nice to see that MOR are still in business, that's where I got my 78P from twelve years ago.

I can't imagine anyone about to buy a Jupiter suddenly seeing that and thinking "that looks similar but is 1/20th the price, I'll get that instead"

Anyone got either of these Squier's? What are they like?
Roland Rock replied to TomWIC's topic in Bass Guitars
http://basschat.co.uk/topic/217932-silver-series-squier-precision-black-l200/ Don't know if this is the same one, both are in Essex Actually the scratchplate, bridge, knocks are all different -
I've just had a play with the Protec Contego. It has three pockets, small, medium and large. I can fit my Streamliner 900 in the larger pocket, two pedal-sized boxes (tuner and di), some leads and spare batteries in the medium one, and spare strings, plectrums, pens etc in the small one. Oh, and a bass. The M80 is up in the loft (shows how often I use it!) but if memory serves correctly, it has similar storage space capacity, but in fewer pockets.

-
Yeah, worry first about the bit that has lots of voltage in it, and you being connected to it via a wire. If you're playing under any sort of cover, just take the trusty one and don't take it out of the case till it's under the cover.

Good on you all for putting in the time/effort/commitment
That's also what I've read, regarding comfort, although I can't imagine the Mono being "uncomfortable".
If you compare the two shapes, the Mono is much more fitted to the shape of the bass neck, and therefore narrower where the tops of the shoulder straps are attached to the case, so the straps are very close together at that point. I think that this is why it is less comfortable. I'd happily carry it short distances, but would be less happy to have it on for extended periods. The Protec is heavier though

All great stuff. For some reason this month I was hankering after something a bit more modern. A lot of them really captured the picture, but Ambient's piece caught my imagination most, closely followed by Skol. Well done all!

I have a Protec Contego and a Mono M80. They are both really good, but I find the Protec more comfortable to wear on my back.
