I did it with my valve preamp Ashdown head. I assume it's fine to do it with a valve preamp.
Yeah, when I say valve amp, I mean proper valve amp with output transformer. Edit, I'm not implying that your amp is improper :-) it's just when people say valve amp, they tend to mean all valve

[sup]
(of course, if you want to run an amp head without a cab, and DI it, that's fine too).
[/sup] [sup]You'll be fine with the LM3 - From the MB website: "any Markbass amp can be used as a preamp only. We recommend that when doing so, you turn off the master volume (not essential, but it's better for the amp). The gain control and/or the Line Out level control will regulate the output from the amp" [/sup] [sup] [/sup] [sup]Whatever you do, don't try it with a valve amp![/sup]

Reasons off he top of my head, based on my experience: 1: We often play gigs where the sound engineer only wants vocals through the PA. 2: When playing through the PA, the monitoring is often crap, or even non existent! 3: It may seem like a faf to you, but constantly searching for 'the perfect tone' and buying and selling all the time is an enjoyable pastime for some. 4: The PA in our practice room won't handle bass as well as vocals. 5: It's the 'done thing', just as our fathers and their fathers before them have done. Maybe.

Squier Vintage Modified vs Classic Vibe
Roland Rock replied to Jono Bolton's topic in General Discussion
"Rebranding the same old designs ad infinitum" I think that's the Fender strategy/marketing department mantra ;-) Sorry, not very helpful. I know they tweak those designs occasionally. As to the difference between CV and VM? Not sure, but people seem to rate the CV more -
Something tells me that I will be ordering a second or a compact from Alex pretty soon...
If you only have a semi, then you need another one to do the job ;-)

A nice little lick, thanks. I love the exercise with the backing track going round the circle of fourths, which I need a bit of practice with. (the fact that it starts with the minor 3rd of the vi and ends with the root of the I, ie the same note, makes it a bit easier) Thanks!

Nice, but not THAT nice!
It's the Nottingham accent which throws me..! Thanks for the toasting, though; much appreciated. 7/8..? Yes, not only, but also. There's 3 time signatures in there, plus a couple of syncopated accentuations. It'd take longer to 'analyse' it than to listen to..!
I suppose I was concentrating on that for the comparison to 'Money'. I'm more of a listener than an analyser, and liked what I heard. Good work :-)
yes, I knew someone would say that...
Your translation is off :-P For my real comments, see the toast face in Soundcloud :-)

What's the Best mid price 6 string bass???
Roland Rock replied to BassManGraham's topic in Bass Guitars
Speaking of custom made 6 strings...my ACG 6'er is for sale and isn't that far above your rough price guide...? If you're interested I could check the nut width and we could discuss numbers via pm
I was just going to write hang on to your money and wait for a Shuker or ACG 6er to come up on the boards. You won't get better than that for the money! -
That thing where you need to change valves every couple of years is a myth/lie.
+1. I've not changed my KT88s for about 8 years!

My valve amp is 100w and I play it through the Barefaced '69er (sealed 6x10, sensitivity 102db). It's loud enough for small/medium gigs, but I have bought a 900w digital jobbie for backup/louder gigs. TBH I use the 900w job for most gigs now as I like the assurance that I have more than enough volume. The valve amp is now reserved for small gigs and recording. The all valve tone can't be beaten!

What's everyone's albums of 2013 so far?
Roland Rock replied to lou24d53's topic in General Discussion
I've only bought one 2013 release so far, the Daft Punk album. What a disappointment! I love the first two albums, but this has just gone in the wrong direction for me. It has a few good moments, but there is a fair bit of weak disco with annoying vocoder. The rest sounds like Jean Michel Jarre massaging Mike Oldfield in a cheese factory. -
Five weeks!? Wow, BF have upped their game. Mine was about seven months! :-D Enjoy
Well seasoned wood has a low moisture content and therefore doesn't shift as much as wood with a higher moisture content. There's a reason that manufacturers like Fodera have a source of wood that's been seasoned for decades! Truckstop
The moisture content in wood once seasoned is not constant, it is always trying to equalise with the moisture content in the air, whether through evaporation or absorbtion. Therefore if the MC is either greater or less than that of the air, it will try to equalise and move the wood accordingly. Therefore, I would say that well seasoned wood has CORRECT moisture content, I would read your statement as implying that the lower the better, which is not true. Anyway, it's a small detail and I think we're more or less reinforcing the same point :-) I'm off to play with my wood
-
well aged wood which will have a lower moisture content than poorer quality wood. Truckstop
It's not a case of the lower the moisture content the better, more a case of seasoning the wood to match as closely as possible that of the environment in which it will be living. Too high or too low and it will move while acclimatising. You're right of course about better quality basses being less susceptible to movement, but this will more likely be due to being more structurally sound (laminated neck, carbon rods etc)

Tuning a bass so that the open strings are in tune is one thing, but a well intonated bass is tuned right up the fretboard. Tune your open E string, then hold down the 12th fret and see if that is also spot on E. If not, adjust the bridge saddle either towards or away from the nut until both open and 12th fretted E's are spot on. Repeat for each string.
I'm hoping to put together a video for this tune and then begin work on proper recording project with Paul towards the end of August... we'll keep you all posted.
Excellent news, it's a real winning collaboration

New basses and beating the Credit Card system...
Roland Rock replied to ZenBasses's topic in General Discussion
If I started down that road, I'd end up with lots of nice basses and a massive debt within three years. Do you have more self-discipline than me?
