I had a band rehearsal last night with STM 900. The settings I ended up with were bass@12, mid@2 and set at 600, treble@11 Also, a slight bass boost and treble cut on the bass. What this got was a deep but clear tone. It sounded a bit muddy with the mid set on 220, which is the setting I assumed I would definitely use. The 600 setting cleaned things up a fair bit, but remained deep and punchy rather than honky. I must say though the mids lacked a bit of richness compared to the valve jobby, but I suppose this is the compromise of a tiny light amp. As I play reggae, I don't have much competition for my frequencies (one clean guitar, no keys) so no issues with sitting in the mix. Not sure when I'll get the chance, but I'd like to try it out in a rockier setting sometime to see how it fares. Overall, I'm really happy, and can see myself gigging with it a fair bit.

I went to school with a chap called Alan Keys. I got a bass with tiny allen screws in the bridge saddles, so I got the Draper 30pc set. It's safe to say I'll never encounter another hexagon that I'll be unable to turn :-)

To my mind, logically the wood must be a factor to some degree. The neck and body woods (along with nut, frets and bridge) are part of the structure that anchor the vibrating string. Vibrations are transferred into that structure, and this will have some bearing on the vibrations in the string, and consequently what the pickup detects. Drawing conclusions by listening to different guitar types is futile, as there are too many variables. Please can someone get 50 alder and 50 ash bodies, then swap the same neck, hardware and electronics between them all and do a poll plus frequency measurements. ;-)

I've had this chap fix a couple of amps for me in the past(seven odd years ago). I've given the OP all the details I have for him in the hope that it will help. His service was impeccable with me, and he seemed like a really honest chap, so I'm hoping that there is an innocent explanation.

I've just picked up a used Polytune on EBay. I was a bit confused by the polyphonic thing till I realised I wasn't in bass mode :-D I'm really impressed, and especially love the way it automatically switches from poly to chromatic depending on whether you strum or pluck - really intuitive.

I like to wear a hat onstage sometimes. Looks good, especially when out of focus ;-)

There was a thread on here recently on the subject of isolated bass tracks. Some highly respected pros sounded awful! Like Mr X says, it's what it sounds like in the band context that really counts

My amp which is 96w RMS has been loud enough for the vast majority of (my) situations, but it's good to have the peace of mind that your amp can comfortably handle anything. In hindsight, I'd have bought a 200Watter

To my ears, the Streamliner sounds really nice and is relatively warm, but there's just no substitute for a valve power section. If I wanted that sound on a budget, Mr Foxen would be my first port of call, and it turns out he's only a few streets away! What are you waiting for?

My 100w Valve head is a one hand lift, and is loud enough for most pub/club gigging, although it's a close call and I've now got a 900w digi amp just in case. This 'baggy bounce', would this be the 'sag'? This is where when the power supply of the amp can no longer meet the current requirements of the input in a linear fashion* I love it, and have yet to experience a solid state/digital amp with the same feel. *I plagiarised this from Google, I have no idea what it means
